When I saw my location signal had stabilized while at home, I thought things were back to normal. But when I went out for a late drive to dinner, the same problems were occurring. Upon loading Apple Maps in Apple CarPlay, I would be a non-specific circle floating about. Driving around without navigating to a specific location, Apple seemed to have trouble tracking my position. If I were to stop at an intersection for a bit, I would turn into a circle again. If navigating, it had a better idea of where I was going, perhaps because it was expecting me to follow the prescribed route.

While I was driving, all road labels vanished for a while, just like what happened a few months ago. This leads me to believe that Apple is definitely doing *something* this weekend which is affecting overall performance. Especially since it's already been confirmed that certain people who received the Northeast update have now lost it.

Below: I'm not even at that corner. But Apple thinks I floated over there.

Below: All road labels (white bubbles) vanished for the last few minutes of this trip. The blue Northern Blvd up top shouldn't be there either, as I'm already on Northern Boulevard. This is a common symptom of when something is up behind the scenes at Apple.

The road labels returned for my drive home, but once out of navigation mode, I became floaty again.

I can’t speak to why the labels and other map elements are misplaced. I did have the other issues you are speaking of, but it was last year during the iOS 12 beta. Then, the issue had something to do with the GPS radios, as it affected all mapping services. It was resolved by about beta 4 or 5, IIRC.

I have not had this problem this year, but also did not use nav mode yesterday. Will be using it this morning, though, and we’ll report back with any issues.

Hopefully you are correct that this means we’ll see the Northeast updates for all here shortly.

Data in MI has been incredible lately. Three route choices almost every time. Traffic is spot on. I’m guessing that means I won’t see an update until December.

Well...when I left home in the afternoon to grab lunch, I was still experiencing the same issue. Then in the late afternoon/evening, I drove to a shopping mall with a parking garage where cell Internet service is really spotty. Obviously, upon arriving, Apple Maps couldn't track me at all.

But when I got back in my car to leave, on a weak 3G signal, Apple Maps was tracking me perfectly as I drove out of the garage, and I had no issues the whole way home. Weird.

Still having minor trouble. Any time I drive through a lengthy underpass, or through a structure that could ever so slightly impact signal strength, Apple Maps was freezing up for a few seconds. Turning off the road into a parking will cause Apple Maps to turn me into a circle again. Even getting into my car in an open area with perfect signal strength had me circle. Otherwise, driving on route was fine.

Seeing more detail re secondary roads as I made a 17 mile trip this morning. More showing and some had traffic indicated on them Was hoping this meant I had the new maps, but no.

Same here.

And it seems my GPS issues are phone-specific. I'm having the same problems in Google Maps and Waze.

It's weird. It's like the GPS strength is weak. If I'm outside, or even in my building, the GPS seems to track me just fine, even pointing in the correct direction I'm facing. But as soon as I sit down inside my car, the GPS always thinks I'm facing approximately 90 degrees to the right of whatever direction I'm actually facing. This never used to happen.

If I load a route in Apple Maps, it'll work just fine for the most part once I actually start driving. But if I drive through a tunnel or under a long overpass, the map will freeze up and it loses my position until I'm outside again. This NEVER used to happen.

We had numerous discussions about this very behavior during the iOS 12 betas. The conclusion reached is that when tethered to the car, the phone actually taps into the vehicle’s onboard nav, either totally or as an adjunct to the phone’s own nav capabilities. Try using maps (via USB) in a different vehicle if you can and see if that makes a difference. The issue may be your car and not the phone.

It may be both. The iOS12 issues were prevalent even without linking to a CarPlay unit. GPS made the phones practically unusable for the first couple of betas.

Interesting. While I'm using a stock iOS 12.4, I *did* coincidentally update my vehicle's navigation software (from MapNSoft) earlier last week. This may have started right after I did that.

I've been browsing a bunch of Apple support forums. Tried all the basics like shutting down Location Services, Bluetooth, LTE, turning off and on Location Permission for Waze, rebooting the phone, etc. No luck so far. I may attempt resetting privacy settings later today, and if that doesn't work, resetting network settings.

I notice the same issue affects my compass app, but not always at the same time. I'm home right now, on wi-fi, after having rebooted the phone restarting all services. The compass app was working perfectly, but Apple Maps was showing me as a lame circle with no direction, and Google Maps thought I was facing 90 degrees to the right.

I just deleted my car's bluetooth profile from my phone, and I'm going to do a raw re-pairing now.

Shoot. Nothing has worked so far. Even tried resetting location and privacy services. Deleted and reset my car's Bluetooth and CarPlay profiles. Nada. Zilch.

Here's what things looked like getting into my car in a large, open parking lot. Apple Maps had a vague idea of where I was, but no idea which way I was facing. So I was just a large circle. At this moment, my compass *was* correct.

IMG_9978.PNG

But in this instance, Google Maps had a better idea of what was going on, showing the direction I was facing correctly.
IMG_9979.PNG

Navigating home on Apple Maps, it took about three blocks' worth of driving before Apple Maps positioned me properly on the road I was on, and even then, was lagging about 400-600 feet behind where I actually was. I did catch up at one point, and it remained steady the rest of the way.

It's not that my GPS isn't working...it's just a tad on the weak side right now. Where the slightest interference causes it to go off balance. When I got into the car earlier today, I was facing west, but my compass thought I was facing southeast. After waving the phone around in figure-eights, the compass started pointing the right way. When I opened up Apple Maps, it was showing me a bit off the road, but facing the wrong way entirely.

I'm really sad. With the Northeast maps update just around the corner, I don't want these sorts of issues hampering my driving fun.

I guess one of the last things I can try is to reset my network settings also. Or maybe just wait it out until iOS 13 comes out next month, and hope that fixes the problem. Sorry to derail the Maps thread. I get the feeling this isn't specifically an Apple Maps issue.

Let us know what happens if you can plug into a different car. That'll be instructive. But this is EXACTLY what I went through on the iOS 12 beta. Just odd that its catching up to you now.

I recently got the battery replaced on my iPhone 6. When I did that, I had to run through a diagnostic check prior to making the appointment. I recall doing this on the web. I don't know if it checks things like your GPS connectivity, but maybe that's worth trying? If you have a hardware issue, no amount of software fiddling is going to help. And resetting your network settings can be a huge PITA.

Start here, and click that big blue "Start a battery replacement" button.

https://support.apple.com/iphone/repair/battery-power

I'm assuming you can cancel the appointment if it forces you to make one.

I'm meeting up with a friend tomorrow who has CarPlay in his car. I'll plug mine in and see what happens.

It seems a TON of people have had similar issues over the years, with various iterations of both phone and operating software. So I'm following all the steps they took to supposedly correct their issues, but haven't found the magic one yet. It's so odd. Some people report it may be a loose GPS antenna, but I baby my phone. It's always in a case, and I've never ever dropped it, not even once.

The fact that you're getting ok readings outside the car tells me that this is somehow the result of your connection to the car. But the GPS diagnostic app I recommended will tell you if there is an issue.

The only issue I had with GPS was with rental cars and the GPS settings from the car manufacturer. But they were WAY worst than what you are experiencing. The car's GPS was overriding where I was and had me 700 miles away. It took up to 10 minutes in some cases for the phone to correct the issue while driving. It's brutal when it happens and you have no idea where you are going.

Downloaded the app gwhiz recommended. This is what I'm seeing at home, while connected to wifi:

Guess I'll see what this looks like when I'm in the car tomorrow. lol

Those are just fine. During iOS 12 betas, I was getting only 2 or 3 satellites and the quality was sub 50%. If you get a chance, before you plug into the car, take the reading from there (with the roof over your head). Then, plug in and see if that changes what you are seeing.
