I come back to say I think there is a bit more stability after deactivate Filevault

Edit

Forget what I said its so random crash too without Filevault

I have a 2014 MBP, do I need a special SATA adapter for these Apple SSD's so I can use it in a PC? I need an SSD for an old PC and it would save me $50 if I can re-use the Apple drive for Windows.

(I specifically need SATA or maybe PCI, not a USB enclosure)

Apple SSD is pcie not sata. sintech probably makes an adapter that would let you slot it into a normal PCIe slot though, whether it would be bootable in your motherboard is another thing entirely. I would suggest getting a cheap sata SSD.

No retina MacBooks or mid-2013 to 2017 Airs will support SATA.

With the Aura drives, they don't provide good price to performance ratio IMHO.

true, but for people that just want a drop-in drive that has good power consumption and no sleep weirdness or compatibility problems... Plus the n series is pretty comparable to normal nvme pricing considering the extra work they did to make it physically fit

The aura drives do have sleep issues as far as I know when not used in a 2015 air or Pro. Only Apple drives support deep sleep (hibernate mode 25).

Anyone know if there are bootrom updates with the 10.15.3 update that was just released, and if there are any changes? I’m still on 10.14.6

MacBook air 7,2 i5 2017, working okay with long sintech adapter and sabrent rocket 1tb (both recent), no issues noticed with sleep or hibernation.

I think I've seen some increased battery drain and some variable benchmarking figures, but I need better data to be certain.

I haven't yet enabled filevault, and I'm slightly nervous of doing it, in case of issues, but I'd like to.

Hi everyone.
I'm loosing my mind over this Nvme update thing.
I have a 15" macbook pro 2014 A1398 and I have updated it with an nvme drive.
The problems that I encounter are these:
-The drive is seen as an external drive (appears as yellow in the drive select at boot screen)
-I have a 10 seconds delay after the boot chime
-My bootroom version is 149.0.0.0.0 and I don't know how to update it since my macbook treats my nvme as external drive, therefore it can't update the bootrom when I update the OS
-The mac crashes after wakeup from hibernation.

Now my question is, how can I make my macbook recognize the nvme as an internal drive so that then I can update the BootRom? And will it be able to sleep and hibernate normally without problems when I update the bootrom? (of course with a proper ssd and sintech adapter)

standbydelaylow 10800
standby 1
halfdim 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
powernap 0
gpuswitch 2
disksleep 10
standbydelayhigh 86400
sleep 1 (sleep prevented by sharingd)
autopoweroffdelay 28800
hibernatemode 3
autopoweroff 1
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 2
highstandbythreshold 50
acwake 0
lidwake 1

I don't know why it shows "sleep prevented by sharingd" because I don't actually have any sharing service enabled.

Hey ! My internal ssd of my macbook pro retina mid 2014 (A1502) juste broke so I decided to buy a Samsung EVO 970. I did some researches and the only conclusion I've got at the moment is to update BootROM (mine is still on Yosemite) to High Sierra or later. But it seems that I can only do it from my original Apple ssd which is broken. Any idea how I can make my new Samsung ssd usable? Every answer is much appreciated. Cheers!

You will need to install an original sale SSD, update to 10.15.3, and then use the Samsung with High Sierra or newer.

I see.. Rip then. I managed to install Ubuntu meanwhile and the ssd is recognized. So let's say that works for me atm.

You can use OpenCore in the meantime with the NVMe DXE driver.

My problem is that the kexts (Lilu and Nvmefix) are not even loading. I tried with SIP disabled and still they don’t load.

I am on Mojave btw, but that shouldn’t matter. I followed the guide for installing kexts on Tonymac

You're not installing it properly then. Are the file attributes correct? There are many guides online about installing kexts.

The whole thing seems weird to me. AHCI is an interface for communication with SATA devices; if AHCI is supported, how can SATA be unsupported?

Yes there are definitely BootROM updates.

The good news is that if you run Security Update 2020-001 for Mojave OR Security Update 2020-001 for High Sierra, you will get your BootROM updated to the same revision that 10.15.3 does.

What effect do these bootrom updates have on our use of third party SSDs?

Sorry, I don't get it quite right - do they or don't?

I'm curious too. SATA controller is in PCH, it's +- the same on all platforms and not unique to Macs, so...
I'm asking so meticulously because I have a very little room for mistakes to make, so I want the best variant off all which works for sure and eats as little power as possible.

I'm in a similar boat to some of the recent posters. I'm running OSX 10.14.3 with a third-party NVMe SSD.

Everything is working great, but I am falling further and further behind on OS security updates. What are the risks of updating to 10.15.3 or installing the latest Mojave security update?

I am specifically concerned about what the update might do to my custom boot ROM.

I have a 15" late-2013 retina MBP with Intel SSD 760p (SSDPEKKW020T8).

Hello everyone,

This thread is fantastic! I have a late 2013 13" Retina Macbook Pro that I am going to switch out the
256 gb stock drive with the 512 gb Sabrent Rocket NVMe PCIE M.2 Drive. I have the Sintech adapter recommended in the threads here.

I'm running Mojave 10.14.6 - should I do the latest updates before proceeding with the hard drive swap as BootROM may have updates?

I'll be backing up my hard drive with Time Machine and then reformatting etc.

I'm aware of the sleep issue with the late 2013 Macbook Pro's so will be turning that off via Terminal.
I think the Hackintosh community has been working on a fix for this? Is this correct?

For the Sabrent SSD, they had the below stated. Is this something I need to fix before doing this process?
  • For those who require a specific sector size to clone their existing SSDs: A newly released Sabrent utility enables users to re-format the Rocket drive and choose the sector size of their liking, either 512-bytes or 4K bytes.
Thank you for any replies!
Cheers,
cWo
