Hello, thanks for that topic I have upgraded my pro 13 2014 at previous weekends with a short sintech adapter from amazon and the sabrent rocket 1Tb drive (Mac OS Catalina).

So far all is great, I have got 1300/1300 write/read speed which as I understood kind of hardware limits for MBP from 2014.

I did not put any hibernation disabling command after install, but so far I did not get any kernel panic or something like that. Also, I checked my battery after night - it still 100%. So, I'm a little bit concerned there, because I expected that something will be wrong, will see how it will behave further...

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger and updating to Catalina today. Should I not do it? I'm running the Sabrent Rocket 1TB . I assume I'll need to run the sudo commands again after I update. Kind of scanned the thread and it seems like people have had success with Catalina and the Sabrent.

Successfully Upgraded my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, running Mojave v.10.14.4

Used this 2TB PNY Drive:
PNY 2 TB Internal SSD - M.2 2280 - CS3030

Hey everyone,

So I have been researching how to manually upgrade the SSD in my 2013 MBA and I came across this post.

I went for a WD black (i bought in 2017). At first, everything was easy but now performances are a lit a bit disappointing.

On Blackmagic, I have 200 mb/s for write speed and 1300 mb/s. is this correct for you? :-/

Update after 1 month on Macbook Pro Retina Early 2015 13":
Never expected a system crash since nvme installation (Sabrent Rocket 1Tb blue one + Sintech Short Adapter). The ssd temperature is around 30 degrees so not bad at all but the most annoying thing is that my cpu overloads a lot and go sometimes above 100 degrees. How can I get lower temperatures? Is this due to Catalina (which i know is bad compared to mojave in cpu usage and temps) or may this related to the nvme ssd installation?
Thank you for anyone answering me and sorry for my english as it's not my main.

Which adapter did you use? Are you running the latest bottom? Have you tried installing and re-installing the adapter? Battery is healthy?

Anyone one having luck with Catalina? Sounds like several people are experiencing heat problems.

Anyone having luck/problems with a mid 2014 15” MBP (11.3) and Adata sx8200 or sabrent rocket after upgrading to Catalina?

Hi,

I'm using the adapter recommended in the first post. The bootrom version is: 119.0.0.0.0.

I do not understand why the writing speed (200Mb/s) very low compared to the reading speed (1300mb/s).

Battery is healthy.

:-/

That is very strange that it would drop like this. Have you tried reinstalling the adapter?

your WDS256g1x0c PCIe NVMe its only rated up to 700mb/s write, real world average users roughly getting upper 300 mb/s, so its a bit below average in my opinion.

Try PRAM/NVRAM reset:
Turn off laptop. Press Command+Option+P+R+Power and hold it down for about 3 cycles and then retest. If that doesn't fix it maybe try SMC reset (look it up). If neither of those work then try another NVME drive or adapter or even a different MacOS on a USB drive to isolate where the problem really is.

Hello
I own a MacBook Pro 15 Late 2013
2 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Boot Rom 158.0.0.0.0
Catalina Version

Looking to upgrade the SSD and in need with some info.
Looking to PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB M.2 Nvme Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - M280CS3030-1TB-RB
or
Samsung (MZ-V7S1T0B/AM) 970 EVO Plus SSD 1TB - M.2 NVMe Interface Internal Solid State Drive with V-NAND Technology

And

Sintech NGFF M.2 NVME Adapter

Witch of the above mentioned SSD is my best option?

Thank you

So did you upgrade to Catalina? any issues?
Im looking at installing a sabrent or adata ssd in my mid2014 11.3 which currently has catalina. ive heard of a couple complaints of machines running really hot with NVMe drives and catalina. interested to hear your experience so far.

Hello dears,
first of all I want to thank this amazing source of information that has been an amazing guide!!! You are awesome!

Ive changed my MBA 13' (mid 2013) ssd to a new m.2 NVMe and everything works fine spart from high temperatures and very complicated situation with my external soundcards.
Im a DJ and music producer who relies strongly on my macbook air for my live gigs. And since Ive changed the ssd, my soundcards (yes more than one model) are not working properly and music is stopping in the middle of my concert, which is totally embarrasing and terrible.

Did anyone experienced the same thing?
Does anyone have a clue if this could be a effect from the SSD change?

i would be very grateful with any piece of information, a hint or any thoughts about it.

Thanks a lot!

My 2013 13” retina with Samsung Evo plus 1TB gives BSOD when the power adapter is unplugged. (Critical Process Died) Anyone delt with this before?

Have you tried with a clone on a different NVME? It could be related to power draw or one of your power rails.

If you install the latest Catalina release, the bootrom will update to the latest release as well.

She had Mojave and bootrom was in the 19x.xx, cannot remember now but can check later.
On the new drive I went with new install of Catalina.

It depends upon your model but you may have not received the bootrom update if you updated from Mojave to Catalina with a non-Apple drive installed. I would love to get a list of drives that people were able to update the bootrom with that are NVME. I suspect those drives have two temperature sensors SSD A Sensor and SSD B Sensor. If someone could get me a list of drives they suspect upgrade the bootrom then I could buy a few and check it using Apple Service Diagnostics to see if they trigger any issues. I can then test to see that the bootrom gets updated properly as well. Then we can complete the list of drives here with those that allow bootrom updating.
Thanks everyone!
