Like I said in a prior post, I chose a non-recommended adapter & SSD and am getting better results than those using the recommended stuff.
I'm baffled, but I want to share if somehow this is the magic combo.

Would you be interested to download this app (Hackintool: https://github.com/headkaze/Hackintool/releases/download/3.4.4/Hackintool.zip) and share what the ASPM column under PCIe says for your SSD? Example from my system (Intel 660p)

Congratulations on your installation success! Out of curiosity, is this carbon copy cloner? Are these back ups suppose to be bootable as claimed by the company? Wonder how this works.
Yes CCC is carbon copy cloner. I've successfully booted from a CCC backup on an external USB drive many times, this time, I just used the backup as the source for migration assistant to pull from.
 
Could it be that the SSD is defective? Same procedure works with an original Apple SSD?

I have tried with SSD from ASUS Laptop NVMe Western Digital given same problem, I think ssd port problem because with Original Apple SSD, when using istat shown no stat reading and macos hang after that. Still wondering if my original apple ssd problem, but i have install windows 10 on apple ssd and it running very well.

Still thinking what the really problem.

Thanks! I've gone with the Sabrent Rocket and the adapter..hoping for at least an improvement of 600/600 R/W speeds that I'm getting currently. Love the 15" and am not ready to give up this beast yet! Adapter and SSD came out to $170. Big Sur will probably be the last supported OS for this machine, but hoping for another 2+ years out of it!

The upgrade was easy peasy! All components are working great and no issues. I'm seeing more than double R/W speeds which is amazing! Not a bad investment to get some more life out of my MBP! Thanks all for suggesting the Sabrent and adapter.

I just want to add, i think nowaday, almost any NVME adapter out there are already built with proper wiring, thus working just fine. Ive been trying dozens of adapter from sintech, nfhk, chenyang, bzhs, long and short, and all working just fine with no speed degradation, and sleep work just fine on supporting model (2015 & newer
 
OK, I bit the bullet and ordered a Sabrent 2T SSD and the Sintech adaptor. It is AMAZING! I had the OWC 1T which I paid $400 and it had the various known sleep issues even though I am running on a mid 2015 MacBook retina. So far with no changes, the Sabrent is sleep fine and the writes are 3x the speed according to Black Magic Disk tester. I highly recommend this setup. My MacBook is so fast now with the Big Sur beta!

Except everyone on this particular forum is discussing replacing the SSD on their 2013 and 2014 MBP. We know 2015 is easier.

How are your battery drains compared to stock Apple SSD? I'm finding even with simple browsing usage the battery drain is rather significant. Perhaps about 4-6 hours of available runtime with the display at around 50-70% brightness typical.

iStat menu is showing SSD current drain of about 0.18A-0.22A typical at idle (with Google Chrome running)

Note: before doing an NVRAM reset, the drain was incredibly high with < 3 hours of runtime.

Your read and particularly write speeds seem very low for that SSD. I have the 2TB Sabrent Rocket and get about 2700MB/s read and write.

Also odd is your test results show green checkmarks for everything, even with that low 500MB/s write score. I wouldn't think some of the 2160p high rate tests would show the passmark.

I’m following this thread occasionally for over three years now, hoping that with some MacOS update one fine day, I would be able to install an NVME drive seamlessly in my Late 2013 MBP 13” 128gb. Infact, I bought a Sabrent Rocket 1tb and the recommended Sintech adapter last Prime Day... I even got the CH431 programmer, but this SPI to J6100 connector is holding me back. I have a 2016 MBP 15 Touchbar 512gb that’s keeping me afloat.

It would be reassuring to know that one can function normally without BOOTROM modification in Late 2013 models. I am comfortable charging the machine everyday. The MBP gives me 7-8 hours of battery backup while general web surfing even today after 700 charge cycles. Any input may make my decision easier. As far as reporting (FEEDBACK) Big Sur Public Beta BOOTROM modification to include native support for NVME is concerned, I have a feeling Apple could be doing so intentionally. Ofcourse, they monitor Macrumors.

I just put the adapter and ssd in, did a complete fresh install and no issues whatsoever on a late 2013 MBP. No overheating, no hibernation issues, nothing..I am beyond thrilled at how easy it was. Didn't even have to do anything with Trim, it's all enabled!

Your MacBook is running in hibernate mode 3 or 25?

Did you close the lid with battery below 50% overnight and it woke with a panic?
 
Hello everyone, I upgraded my computers -macbook pro mid 2015 15” from 512gb to 1tb Samsung pro970. I bought the sintech adapter (the long one) And installed it into my computer, i attached my new ssd to the adapter and the adapter to the macbook pro. I found that i dont get the best speed, and it actually really slow for it, i had tried to play with the adapter and the ssd and move it to the sided on the logicboard, i found its helping, when I did that I got speed up to 2580 write & 2250 read, but only for a short time, and than it goes back to very slow such as 1380 write & 1480 read. The reason i kept play with it is because i saw different of the speeds, but after i turn off my computer and turn back on the speed getting down again. I want to share with you the picture of my disk utility and what i did when I first installed the macos. I got to this because i think this is the reason that my ssd is too slow for an nvme ssd.
please, help me understand and guid me, what should i do the make the speed highest as possible?
And what is the reason/what i did wrong in the installation that my mac is super slow.?

please help me, im getting around with that issue for half a year.
buying different adapters and trying million things from kaptop tape to reset pram, format my MacBook for 3 times. nothing helped.
I really wish someone will direct me to do the right thing to get the best of it.

Shows that I'm in Hibernate Mode 3, but yes, closed the lid, got up the next day with no panics or anything..it just works!

Hi all,

Late 2013 MBPR 13" owner here.
I previously posted about managing to flash the patched BootROM with success, v160.0.0.0.0.

Unfortunately the usual hibernation issues are back...
I discovered that my laptop was updated to BootROM v162.0.0.0.0, even with the 3rd party SSD (a Crucial P1, model CT1000P1SSD8).
I'll try to patch this version and flash the laptop again, but, did anyone else have the same issue?

Thanks for this info. Yes it seems the Macbook can be operated comfortably with daily charging and moderate use. Will have to ensure I shut it down prior going for any tour/ visit. The issue is that over last many years with Macs, I've gotten used to just closing the lid instead of shutting it down. Based on your update, I might give a try to update my SSD.

Probably worked because the battery did not drain enough to trigger safe sleep.

With hibernate mode 25, it will panic like it does for all 2013 and 2014 Pros and Airs.

I understand unsaved work would be lost, ROM data would be lost. But if I charge it and try to reboot through hard pressing power button, would it return to normal? Thanks in advance.

Of course. IOREG displays information from IOKit which is the kernel driver framework of macOS. The first command displays the Information of PCI device with name SSD0. The next is information forthe NVME driver controller class and the last is the same for the storage.

With safe sleep, macOS writes the ram contents to a page file and powers off. This will happen when the battery level gets too low or when using hibernate mode 25.

When you press the power button, macOS loads the page file and brings the computer back to the way it was just before it powered off. For the 2013 and 2014 Macbooks without a modded ROM and a NVMe drive, the page file is not properly saved and causes a kernel panic.
