I just saw what you’re looking at for this drive. It’s a SATA drive though.
The NVME PCIE version is 132.99

It was 20% off the NVMe P31 1TB :)

The deal is gone now. I'm guessing it might be recurring between now and Christmas.

@kvic Funny thing though ... I just did an order from amazon.com (so thanks for mentioning it). Although it's not the exact same deal, but @ 129.99 with a $10 off coupon bringing the price down to $119.99. I had a $50 credit on my .com account. Signed up for Prime as a trial. Got free shipping to Niagara Falls, NY. Total was $79.59 USD.
My freight forwarder (Shippsy) will take the package and bring it over the border to Canada for $6.99 CDN and all I need to do is pay the taxes. Buying from Amazon.ca would cost $275.00 plus tax.

Great tip. I live in the GTA and didn't know about this service.

Hi

I replaced ssd in my mac and sometimes when my mac is hibernate now got crash (kernel panic errors), my macbook 2017 a1708 without touchbar, and installed ssd is WD sn530 512gb. Any ideas? error pops up randomly, only in hibernation.

The symptom looks like very similar to the "hibernation issue" caused by old Apple firmware described in post #1.

Worth checking if your Mac has latest firmware. If not, you could update to the latest firmware by installing the original Apple SSD and Big Sur.

Other than that not much idea. Good luck.

There was a thread dedicated to the 2017 MBP (no-touchbar) for upgrading the SSD, but it seems to be gone. I recall posting a reply on that thread, but it's not longer in my history.

But if the 2017 MBP is like the 2013/14 MBP and MBA, then you should look to get on the latest BootROM. On the older MBP/MBA computers, you just have to install the latest Mojave (or later) using an original SSD. Once you do that, you should be fine.

Alternatively, you can disable the hibernate mode using Terminal.

Hello, this is my first post here and i literally spent days back reading everything.

I do have two macbook pro retinas, one 13' Late 2013 and one 13' mid 2014. (Macbook 11,1)

I have followed the instructions and installed WD SN550 500gb on the mid 2014. But i have been very dissatisfied with the idle energy consumption (currently .30A). It's current usage time was cut by almost half from 9 1/2 hours (Catalina) to merely 4 1/2 - 5 hours in Big Sur + the NVME upgrade.

For those in my situation, how many hours is your current usage time with the Crucial P2? I'm thinking of buying two 1tb NVME SSDs and upgrading both of my macs at the same time. I am aware that i cannot use SsdPmEnabler and i don't intend to install anymore third party kexts but just get the longevity by getting an NVME with a very low energy consumption like the much vaunted crucial p2. Also are there any things i need to take note of by upgrading to the said 1tb Crucial p2?

If you sell both of these MBP and add the money you save by not buying two 1TB NVME SSDs, you're almost at the full cost of a refurb or discount M1 Macbook Air. The M1 Air will last far longer and be much more powerful.

I've had a good run with upgrading the NVME SSDs in my old pre-2015 MacBooks, but the M1 Macs are becoming cheaper and cheaper especially on the discount / used market, and they offer so much more that it's time to start thinking about making the jump.

I currently have no appetite for an m1 mac. Here in my region usb A's are still the thing and besides my work only usually involves word processing (and i only play through emulators like that of the OpenEMU etc.) so i have no use for a stronger processor (which i have a workhorse desktop to rely on if ever). I was only forced to upgrade the memory on the mid 2014 macbook as i only had something like 8gb on the SSD as free space. Frankly, the macs i have are perfect for me...they just work. My only gripe other than the lack of storage is that Catalina is not compatible to the Xbox Series X controller that i bought.

UPDATE: After reading everything about the Crucial P2 being downgraded to QLC i'm thinking of just sticking with the WD SN550 on the mid 2014 and not upgrade the late 2013.

Btw, anyone here who has used the QLC Crucial P2? I heard the endurance has taken a hit and the SLC is useless once it's half the capacity

Hi guys!

Macbook Pro A1502 (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014)

I'm trying to upgrade to ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro (1Tb) with an adapter

After installing the new SSD, the drive is not detected at all on Disk Utility, Terminal "diskutil list" command

Even when I installed it inside external case and connect by usb (like external ssd)

How to solve this problem?

it's probably uninitialized. I had the same problem and i just fiddled with the options on where to install the Big Sur OS

One thing you can do if you have a PC is to put it in the motherboard with nvme slot and go to "Disk Management" in windows 10 and initialized it from there. That was how i was able to initialize my other WD SN550

Perhaps the SSD is defective. Do you have another MacBook or PC to test it on?

I was seriously starting to consider whether to upgrade to a newer MacBookPro next year and buy a new Air M1 for my son this year, but I found an interesting video (and then, a bunch of other related videos) explaining how to virtualize macOS through Type-1 hypervisors.

If you have a horsepower desktop, why don't you keep your Macs without updating the SSD and use them ONLY as terminals for Monterey ESXi VMs for instance? Just saying...

That's because my work prior to the pandemic involves lots of travels out of town. I need the SSD space not only for my work but also for leisure like for movies or series for example when work is done and you just kind of need to stay in the hotel room. Funny 'cause i only use my horsepower desktop for heavy gaming since I'm more comfortable with MacOS for work.

So which OS were you on previously, and you booted off USB installer of what OS, and which adapter did you get? Booting off USB installer of any of the latest OS versions and running disk utility should show the disk as long as it's installed with reputable adapter and not defective. I've had the 2TB and Sintech short adapter for over a year on my Air and no issues..

Perhaps it’s the WD SSD then. Maybe try a different brand.

Every YouTube video that I’ve seen for the 2017 MBP non-touch uses the Sabrent Rocket SSD. Maybe the WD just isn’t compatible.
I saw video on YT with SSDs ranking, and WD SN530 was on 1st place. I know people uses the Sabrent Rocket, but that SSD have big energy impact.

Wow guys, I have a Crucial P2 on its way with the small Sintech adapter. Sadly I just discovered about this new P2 QLC version. Thinking about returning it without opening. What could be another good ssd for a 13" mbp 12,1 early 2015? I'm looking at WD Blue SN550 which has a similar price. EDIT: oh so also this had swapped components as the P2..

Also is it true that apple diagnostics will keep throwing out error code VDH002 anyway?

I will also be reading this thread backwards for hints

edit: looks like the Sabrent Rocket is a nice (costly) option

The new WD Blue SN550 is okay even as the new reviews say so, i'm using it both on my workhorse PC and Mac. My only gripe is the idle power consumption @.30A

Hello can anyone help me, my 13" mid2014 seems to somehow crash when opened after i left it to sleep overnight every now and then (maybe like 3/10 times), it does not happen everytime but sometimes only. I am running on Big Sur with the latest bootrom available.

Excellent Wiki article in this thread. Thanks a lot to everyone who contributed.
The one piece of information i am missing relates to speed:

Question:
In "About this Mac" -> "System Information" -> NVMExpress:
What value should i see for "Link Width" ? The number of PCIe lanes supported by the NVME SSD inserted ??? (1...4)

In my case, i do see 'x1', but i thought it should be x4 for my case.
I am asking also because i think my SSD gives less performance than the graphics in the wiki post:

MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2015 (A1398), 2.2Ghz I7, 16GB memory, Mojave 10.14.6,
Adapter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZVQXG4B
WDC SDS100T2B0C - Western Digital 1TB WD Blue SN550 NVMe Internal SSD - Gen3 x4 PCIe

Black Magic Disk Speed Test shows me read/write speeds around 800 MByte/sec (read and write).
My original Apple 256G AHCI disk gave me 1200 MByte/sec write and 1800 MByte/read speed.

Do i have any misconfiguration ? I wouldn't want to believe my Adapter passes through only one PCIe lane, but it almost looks as if this could be the problem ? So i would love to see some reconfirmation that i should see 'x4' for the "Link Width"!

Ok so my P2 has arrived and it has the UK/CA logo on the external label. I'm gonna return it sealed.
