The problems it has playing back 4K HEVC video have nothing to do with the SSD. It's because your Broadwell CPU (from 2015) is too old and thus is missing a critical feature.

I wish I knew before :) Nevertheless, thank you for your valuable information!

my unsupported 2015 MBP 13" with Hynix P31 NVme works very well OCLP-Ventura, no ssdpmenabler needed, I was encoding 4k dolby vision downscale to 1080p with Handbrake, max out CPU used and yet SSD 3.3v only uses 0.6A, that's pretty good.

That's simiar to my Adata: about 0.5-0.6A under normal heavy usage, slightly more when running disk benchmarks. And I know about patching, but running patched unsupported OS on my "production" MBP is beyond my private comfort zone (I'm fine with third party SSD and nvmefix, as it runs as well as the OEM disk, only faster).

I found the video format settings. It's under Settings -> Camera -> Formats.

High Efficiency is h.265 HEVC
Most Compatible is h.264 AVC <-- Use this for compatibility with your 2017 MacBook Air.

Note that Apple does not allow h.264 AVC at 4Kp60. If you want to use h.264 AVC, it must be 4Kp30 or less.

Does anyone test the adapter with Samsung SSD 980 PRO or WD_BLACK 1TB SN770 NVMe ?
Which version ?

Thanks

3 - Which NVMe SSDs are known to work?

Basically all NVMe SSD work, except a few ones with incompatible firmwares.
The following models have been tested to work :
  • Adata NVMe SSD : SX6000, SX7000, SX8200, SX8200 Pro etc.
  • Corsair NVMe SSD : MP500, MP510
  • Crucial NVMe SSD : P1, P2, X8
  • HP NVMe SSD : ex900, ex920, ex950
  • OCZ RD400
  • Toshiba XG3, XG4, XG5, XG5p, XG6
  • Intel NVMe SSD : 600p, 660p, 760p
  • MyDigital NVMe SSDs : SBX - BPX
  • Kingston NVMe SSD : A1000, A2000, KC1000
  • Sabrent Rocket (Phison E12 and E16 based)
  • Samsung NVMe SSD : 960 Evo, 960 Pro, 970 Evo, 970 Pro, 970 Evo plus (with latest firmware), 980
  • WD Black NVMe SSD v1, v2 and v3, WD Blue SN550 (FW Update mandatory), SN750, SN750 SE
  • Inland Premium (not Professional)
NVMe SSD known not to work on MacBook Pro / Air. DO NOT BUY:
  • Samsung PM981
  • Samsung 950 Pro
  • WD Blue NvME SN570

What is your macbook model, depending on the model, 980 or 970 Pro might be a better suit. 980 pro is overkill for almost any models honestly.

I followed your instructions at least to step 3, where hackingtool got a lot of operation not allowed errors, i rebooted into recovery and "csrutil enable --without kexts" doesn't run but "csrutil enable --without kext" does, the difference being the kext is singular not plural. I also didn't get the permission popup in system preferences, i guess its coz i had allowed the kext to run before. I have attached screenshots of the terminal results. upon rebooting normally, ssdpmenabler is installed but not loaded (see screenshots) so i'm not sure if its working. though the SSD is idling at between .15A and .19A

Ended up purchasing a mid 2015 MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB because I was disappointed with the performance of a early 2015 MBP after an ssd upgrade.

I had upgraded a 13" MBP with a Crucial p2 CT500P2SSD8 500GB. I am thinking of swapping out this SSD and putting it into the mid 2015 MacBook Pro. Anyone else running one of these drives in one of these MBP? what's it like performance wise? cheers

Interesting thing happened to me... As soon as I noticed that QLC P2 has an issue, I wrote review on Amazon and requested refund. Crucial asked me if I would like to try another drive and I agreed. Just arrived 2 hours ago, I installed it in my MBA 2017 with Monterey and guess what? This drive works like a charm!!! I let it stress test for about 30 min and the speed didn't drop below 1.2GBps! I compared the drives and the one that works has a newer firmware on it P2CR048, the faulty one has firmware P2CR033, see attached photos!

My conclusion is that it might be a matter of QLC P2 firmware, not necessarily a hardware issue!
So basically it is a different drive again. Based on that P2CR010 can only be upgraded to P2CR012, P2CR031 to P2CR033, it looks like the last digit is really the FW version and the digit above it is more like a HW revision. They are incompatible in terms of FW and use different chips as well. So those with P2CR03* (including myself) are stuck with a drive that is slowing down as time passes and not much we can do about it...?

Hi. Was this a fresh purchase? I guess they would not replace one that was bought 1.5 yrs ago? It became incredibly slow by now...

P2 been well known as a quirky one by now. Some is fine, some is "terrible" unfortunately.
if possible i'd recommend you to pick another ssd models instead

For anyone interested: I've talked to Crucial support about my P2 write speeds getting slower over time. They pointed me to this page: https://uk.crucial.com/support/articles-faq-ssd/ssd-used-to-be-faster-but-has-slowed-down
But meanwhile I've run speed test again, and now it showed me 1100-1200MB/s sequential, which is approximately the speed it had when it was new. At other times I've measured few hundreds or sometimes down to 80MB/s. So now I'm kind of buffled. When I finally decided to do something about the issue, I cannot reproduce it any more...

I was surprised to find the SN570 (the current absolute value king; mid-range gen3 NVME for $65 1TB) listed on the Sintech's Short List for unsupported drives in Mac models. It's literally just the SN570 and SN770 alongside 2 older Samsung AHCI SSD's.

I had no idea that this drive was a problem and I just installed into a MacBookPro11,5 with macOS 11.2.

It was recognized...
Easily formatted...
macOS Installed...
Booted Fine...
macOS feels snappy and like new.

Granted I haven't done EXTENSIVE testing yet (Sleep/hibernation, Speed Tests, Heat, Battery Impact), but it clearly WORKS fine.

Only thing I noticed was Trim was enabled by default (but that's a GOOD thing, right?).

I have been having a hard time finding any documentation on here or the Amazon pages regarding issues, so what's the deal? Other Amazon users (as well as Sintech CN in the questions section) are confirming that this drive works fine. Only thing I've found is kernel panics when using 'ssdpmenabler'...but how many users are actually installing and using a third party kext? Didn't even know about until I dug deep for this drive.

Currently running 11.3 via OCLP...let me know!

I wonder too. My SN550 works perfectly in my Mac mini. However I can tell you with other SSDs, there is inconsistent behaviour with some models, partially depending on the firmware revision of the drives. And the firmware revision can’t always be applied to different versions of the same drive model because the design actually has changed. ie. The model number doesn’t necessarily suggest that all versions of it are the same drive.

In any case, while I put an SN550 in my Mac mini, I was happy to do that since it never needs to run on battery, and it’s my personal machine that I can troubleshoot.

However, in both my 2017 MacBook Air and my 2015 MacBook Pro, I put in OEM Apple drives. That way there are no possible incompatibility issues or power drain issues, in machines that are used primarily by other members of my family.

Anyhow, I would recommend posting in the MacBook Pro NVMe thread.

When your write cache is full, it will slow down, of course. And will back after it flushed.

so it's not strange actually, especially for P2,

which Tom's Hardware Review (https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-p2-m-2-nvme-ssd) conclusions said all about it's performance :

  • Sub-par performance
  • USB 2.0-like sustained write speed
  • Firmware needs further performance optimization
  • Aesthetics could use some work
  • Small SLC write cache and slow direct-to-TLC write speed
  • Reduced power efficiency

Crucial P2 has changed the specs so often and easily, that I don´t trust it any more.

As this has become a wiki page about it, can confirm the following upgrade is possible with no pre-format of the ssd needed:

- MacBook Pro 13" early 2015
- running MacOS catalina (10.15.7)
- using an AliExpress ssd adapter (https://m.pt.aliexpress.com/item/33...etail.0.0.c8c84c7fHklBN9&gatewayAdapt=glo2bra)
- a MacOS Catalina bootable USB drive
- WD Blue SN570 500GB

that's it. Really appreciate the full article and wanted to keep it updated. Cheers!

I've had this MBP 15' for 4 years. I installed a 1TB ADATA SX8200NP SSD as soon as I purchased the computer so I have been running with that drive for 4 years without a problem.

For the past 2 weeks though, I have been experiencing these panics where the MAC will shutdown unexpectedly. It would then reboot and I would receive this error.

Code:
panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f9d75e231): nvme: "Fatal error occurred. CSTS=0xffffffff US[1]=0x0 US[0]=0x95 VID=0xffff DID=0xffff
. FW Revision=SVN139B\n"@/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/IONVMeFamily/IONVMeFamily-470.100.17/IONVMeController.cpp:5320

I opened a thread here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mbp-mid-15-panicking.2370255/ but I though I would ask here if anyone has experienced the same with this ADATA SSD.

Try to resettle the drive: remove the adapter+ssd and put it back. I used to have this type of error on my wife's MBA Early 2015 and resettling the SSD solved the problem.

MBP 15' Mid 15
MAC OS Catalina 10.15.7
1TB ADATA SX8200NP
Sintech adaptor

Do these speed look right? Write speeds seem on the low side.
View attachment 2113965

Your Mid 2015 MBP 15' should have:
Link Width: x4
Link Speed: 8.0 GT/s
(About this Mac -> Hardware -> NVMExpress).
Which should provide around 2.3 MB/s read and write.
Maybe, after resettling the SSD, the speeds will go to normal.

I just installed the Intel 660P 512GB via short sintech adapter on my early mid 2014 13" rMBP running Ventura 13.0.1 + OCLP 0.5.1.
The only problem is installing windows 10 via bootcamp and using 128gb 3.1 usb drive. I get to the windows 10 install menu, it installs just fine. once it reboots, it reboots into windows install again(which it isn't supposed to) BUT this time it doesn't show any available drives to install. Once I exit, it reboots again into windows setup and on the bottom it says "starting/setting up service (%)". a few minutes goes by I get the BSOD and it goes into bootloop and crashes every time. It installed fine with the OG apple SSD.
Anyone know a way to install windows properly? TIA

EDIT: I've also tried to create a partition via disk utility instead of using bootcamp and I still have the same issue as stated above.

Did you check the documentation about having OCLP + Windows 10 EFI simultaneously?

I had already tried that and even cleaned the contact pads of both the SSD and adapter. Didn't seem to solve the issue. I did it again last night as I updated Catalina to Big Sure on the Apple SSD to allow the BootRom to be upgraded to version 476.0.0.0.0. I then added the ADATA back. So far I haven't experienced a panic but these are ramdom so I will have to wait and see.

ADATA SX8200NP:

Capacity: 960.2 GB (960,197,124,096 bytes)
TRIM Support: Yes
Model: ADATA SX8200NP
Revision: SVN139B
Link Width: x2
Link Speed: 8.0 GT/s

Link width seems off. What could be the reason for this?
I have ordered a new adapter from Sintech to see if that fixes the Link Width : x2 and hence the overall writing speed.

I use a Silicon Power A80 1Tb NVMe and a Sintech Adapter with Monterey 12.6.1; and the internal SSD (1 switched the original HDD to an SSD in 2016) I use as Time Machine.
I have around 470 R/W in the internal SSD and 470/700 R/W in the A80.

I'm still undecided whether I will install Ventura on it or not.

This is the link:

So A lot has changed on this, I really enjoy this group. I have a 2010 Mac Pro build that solved this issue for me. I need help with the Wireless and BT set up BTW, but fist, on the OCT '22 update in Monterey Apple installed a KEXT that does NOT play well with our adapter. In sleep as I am guessing the RAM is reorganizing, there is a kernel panic and shuts down the Mac mini. APPLE needs to fix this. Why would they? It's a kernel issue and it's clear the adapter, not the M2 NVMe age, size etc. that throws the code.

Anyone point me to Mac Pro 2010 BT airdrop and wireless support?

Yes the link width is not normal, you should have x4 instead of x2. With x2 your speed obviously will halving.

to diagnose, you gonna need either another adapter or another ssd. If any ssd and adapter still throwing x2 link speed, then it's your board.

as for ADATA, the SX8200 is a great drive, but their other models doesn't age well, i'd several SX6000 dead, or having overheat issue after 1-2 year of usage. Decided to stop using their SSD altogether these day (especially the one with Realtek Controller)

Phison (for high end drive) and Silicon Motion (for budget drive) based SSD is my pick for today
