Okay, then why are the Xr phones less expensive? Is Apple just being generous to people who like different colors?

Because the superior LCD is also cheaper, and the single camera is also cheaper but better engineered. And the lack of 3D Touch is also cheaper but haptics a superior experience, the less ram is also cheaper but saves on electricity which helps the bigger battery last longer. The aluminium is also cheaper but doesn't rust as much as the inferior XS etc.

P.S most 'stamina' phones are actually budget as well, check out android. Not a causation kinda thing, just saying that it doesn't follow premium in many cases.

Lol, why don't you track down Jony Ive and Tim Cook and give them your new discoveries. The Xr is a very nice device, but you don't have to rationalize to feel good about getting it.

No, buyers are paying more for the better screen, better cameras, 3D Touch, etc.

Apple has buyers convinced its better when it isn't. Luckily for Apple many are falling for it. Go ahead, pay more for a device with a poor viewing angle, burn in issues, and color shifting. What is this, 1994? The Xs phones also have worse battery life and shatter on impact to marshmallows, resulting in a 599 fee (back glass).

XS is a scam, pure and simple.

Well, I fell for the Xs Max scam then and It's by far the best phone Ive ever owned. Heck I won't need to upgrade for 2-3 years at least. In 2-3 years I hope I get scammed again the way I got scammed this year.

Apple charges more for the XS because they can.

Eh, I don't know about that. You can certainly prefer the XR for a number of totally valid reasons (I do too). But I think, probably, the XS costs more to manufacture/produce than the XR. The OLED display alone should cost a few more bucks than the XR's LCD.

plenty of budget Android phones with OLED screens on the market.

From the moment I saw the Xr I didnt like it. if you want a "cheap" good iPhone buy the 8/8Plus. if you want premium buy the Xs/Xmax. But this is just me am sure a lot of people will find a justification for the Xr to squeeze them self in this gap of Apple pricing.

No HDR display
No 3D Touch - not that this matters soon.
No telephoto / zoom lens

XR has 1792×828 resolution on LCD (326 PPI) vs the X with 2436×1125 resolution on a crisp OLED display at (458 PPI).

The XR has a Single 12-megapixel rear camera vs a Dual 12-megapixel lens on the X.

The effective resolution of the iPhone X/XS is 1624x750... That's because OLED has RGBG pixels. You take the native resolution and divide by 1.5 to get actual full pixel resolution.

So in effect, the XR is a resolution upgrade to the X/XS... LCD is wholly different than OLED.

It is true that pentile subpixel displays need to be higher PPI in order to achieve the same effect as an LCD at lower resolution, otherwise you get a screen door effect. But its a stretch to say that the XR has a more effective pixel resolution that could be perceived as superior to the eye. If anything that PPI at its size would reveal pixels at close observation before either of the OLEDs here. The only time this was apparent on a phone was lower PPI screens like OnePlus (which was 1080p, and pentile). One of the reasons this disappeared for most screens with advent of 1440.

The XR LCD will look incredible, it'll incorporate all of the advances Apple has made in LCD tech over the years and go nearly as edge to edge as the XS. 326PPI is extremely sharp, and great for everyday use. LCD won't have burn in issues, color shifting, or limited viewing angles, and it'll have all the subpixels. XR is clearly the superior phone.

I still don't get what it would bring to the table. I have a hard time seeing the difference between 720p and 1080p on my 47" TV...

It does not means others don't see the difference. I would not even consider thinking about purchasing XR because of it's extremely low screen resolution.

When the XR comes out, let's put the same Safari Page, side by side, to the XR / XS / XS Max and compare what the page looks like.
I suspect the amount of text on the screen will go something like this order, XS / XR / XS Max.

From normal distance, make a judgement call as to what looks better. We have been crazy happy with Apple's LCD IPS screens, for some time now. Its not like they suddenly found OLED and it was gloriously better. At most it's incrementally better, but I think they are hard pressed to produce any real advantages at this time. It's comparable.

Actually, the XR and XS Max will display the exact same amount of content.

I'm not doubting a person can tell a minute difference, i'm questioning the true impact that difference will objectively make on their day to day lives. Text is still sharp and can be read, videos look great, etc. Unless you get your jollies by specifically idolizing PPI, you won't get any incremental benefits with OLED.

Also, most people don’t hold TVs near their faces. Some do sure, but we can allow for that.

Sure, but I’m certain those cheap displays aren’t in the same league as the ones Apple is using. QC costs alone must be considerably higher.

On the flip side, there are super cheap phones out there with LCD displays. But I’ll bet the XR’s costs much more to produce, because it incorporates technology/standards that those lesser displays don’t.

Yep:

Even better than Samsung’s own note 9.

One thing i realized about this forum is that ppl are truly brainwashed beyond belief. no sense in trying to argue with someone who's literally on their knees for apple. it's quite sad people are willing to pay over $1000 for a top of the line device when it used to cost much less and they'll make justifications for it too.
