I pre-ordered the iPhone 13 PM Graphite 256GB; it is set to arrive on 09/24. I did the "get ready for preorder" on the web on Wednesday. I set it for 24/mo no interest on Apple Card (not the IPU). Apple immediately authorized the cost of the iPhone and AppleCare+ and listed it on my Apple Card as an installment plan. They did a separate authorization for taxes. They said if I deleted the transaction or didn't complete the preorder by 09/20 they would release the hold on my Apple Card account. I accessed the store via the app around 4:55 AM (PDT) today and it let me in to complete the pre-order around 5:04 AM (PDT). When I went back in today all I had to do was review and confirm. I didn't do the IPU because I have never kept an iPhone less than 2 years and I pass my old phone to my wife and her phone goes to another member of her family (currently an iPhone 8 Plus). She will be getting my iPhone 11 PM 256GB. If I offer to buy her a new phone she says she prefers just taking my old phone and saving the money. So, it works out well for everyone.

I've been on the phone with Citizens and Apple for the last 2 hours. The early upgrade payment is supposed to be the 12th payment for my iPhone 12 Pro. However, I made my 12th payment directly to Citizens at the end of day on Tuesday, 9/14 (like 6:30pm EST). Even though this payment has been processed on Citizens side, Apple's system still only saw that I made 11 payments when I upgraded this morning. Therefore, I got charged the extra $57 as an early upgrade payment. Once I return my iPhone 12 Pro and Apple deems it in good condition, they'll send the early upgrade payment $57 to Citizens who will then do their math and see that I have overpaid and then refund me the $57.

@beach bum I checked my new loan and I also have $57 there. Just wanted to clarify that this early upgrade payment is for the soon to be closed loan, my current iPhone 12 Pro.

TLDR; if you're ever short on payments due to Apple changing iPhone launch dates or you upgraded later, there is no need to pay Citizens directly for your extra payments as Apple will charge you that amount when you're upgrading. The other option is to pay off your 12th payment at least 4 days before the pre-order so that Apple's system is updated by the pre-order day!

I can't believe I just spent like 2 hours getting to the bottom of this for $57!! o_O

Just wanted to say huge thanks for posting what you found out! I was sitting on hold with Citizens after talking with Apple for the EXACT same thing as you and decided to read some of this thread while I was waiting. I had summarized that we didn't need to make the 12th payment which would have been NICE to know Apple, but I wasn't sure how I was going to get back my extra money. Feeling a bit better now but wishing I had known all this ahead of time!!!

So I slept through the pre-ordering opening time this morning, and delivery is now mid-October. However I can pick up at the Apple store on the 24th Sept.
Question for someone who has done this pickup before: is it going to be a zoo with long lines on the 24th? Can I pickup later the following week, or do I have to pick up on the 24th?
I've picked up in person at the Apple Store on launch day and there's a separate line for pickups vs people just walking in to buy an iPhone. I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes before talking to an Apple Store employee. It's pretty painless. I think they will hold it a few days (you should check with Apple). If you are part of the IUP, you'll need to return your iPhone 12, so just be ready!

Apple will still send trade in kit even if you pick in store. You can't trade in in any Apple store unfortunately

No problem! I demanded to speak to a manager at Apple my second time and she was super nice and helpful. She was very familiar with the whole IUP. She even spoke to Citizens One for me and we had a group call to clear things up. I'm feeling better that other people also ran into this "issue". One last thing, Citizens said that by end of October or early November, I should be getting the credit to my payment method (my cc). So be on the look out!

I talked to Apple yesterday about how the T-mobile rebate will work. They said when you receive your new IP13, you will receive a link to go to T-mobile, put in your phone # and new IMEI number and you will be setup for the credit which I believe will be a service credit spread over either 12 or 24 months.

Glad you had someone knowledgeable at Apple and that they helped you with Citizens too! :) Apple was nice to me, but basically transferred me over to Citizen's with the not so re-assuring "Yea, you shouldn't be charged but you'll have to ask Citizens" I did end up talking to Citizen's rep where I was told that I would be charged the extra payment because "your Tue payment hadn't posted to my account in time to be recognized as a 12th payment" and then got disconnected. I, like you, had made my payment on late Tuesday too with Citizens. However, I can say at this time, that I haven't been charged anything yet either on my Amex or per my Citizen's current IUP loan. I can already see the new IUP loan in my Citizen account online when it was opened this morning, but nothing charged there yet either. I can live with Oct or Nov for getting the money back as long as I get it back. That's all that really matters to me. Making an extra payment for nothing would really stink!!!

I will not spend the entire day refreshing my order on the Apple Store app to see if my status changed from "Order placed" to "Processing". LOL...I say that and I keep checking. I'm not too worried since the pending charge does appear on my bank account, so it will go to PFS later today and hopefully tomorrow or Sunday is when we can start the tracking madness.

Just until it says Processing, which shouldn’t take all day. See, you’ll be fine :D

I wonder if it’s a good idea to not switch the Citizens loan back to Apple Card until after the phone ships, if the initial transaction didn’t go through using Apple Card? There’s no reason it shouldn’t have, I use it all the time and it’s been the payment method on all my citizen loans up to this point…
I had trouble using my AppleCard for my IUP order so I used a different card to complete the order. Received a confirmation email from Apple for the phone and received an email from Citizens my loan was approved.

I logged into my Citizen's account and added the new loan number. When I tried to change the payment method to my AppleCard I received the message the change method of payment wasn't available.

Later on I saw my alternate card had been charged for the old phone's final payment and for the taxes. Went back to Citizens and found I could change the payment method over to my Apple Card. The next payment wasn't until next month so I felt it was okay to change the card.

4 hours 😂💙👇😳😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😍😍😍 I NEED IT RIGHT NOW 😱😱😱😱😱😱

Thanks so much for this! Very very glad I didn’t do the baby blue. Took me about 1 minute after getting into the Apple Store app at 8:01 est. Had the confirmation email by 8:02. Apple Card with a direct trade in with no issues.

Apple will hold the phone in store for 14 days if I miss my pickup reservation 9/24 and I can give them my trade in during pickup.

I chose in store so I’m not at the mercy of the mail and so they can do the phone swap for me.
