Interesting, so even though you had a mail in kit sent to you, you were still able to take it to the Apple Store to receive your credit? Was this for a carrier trade-in/new installment or outright purchase?

Outright purchase. The 12PM was an outright purchase as is the 13PM.

The Specialist offered to take care of my trade-in and set up the new phone the day I picked up, but I told him I wanted to do everything myself at home. He told me I could bring the trade-in back at any point in the 14 day window. I wouldn’t need an appointment as long as they weren’t too busy.

I went today and they took care of me. No appointment was needed.

Have your trade-in, the card you used to purchase online, and the new phone so they can scan serials numbers, run diagnostics, and take pictures of the old device. The credit card is needed to put the credit on it. You’ll get a receipt emailed to you. Done.

I actually like the fast scrolling. I’m not trying to read while scrolling, so for me, the slowdown is unwanted.

That said, I guess I’m getting used to it fairly quickly. It’s not smooth to me, though, just slower.

I’m more thankful for the brighter screen more than anything else. I noticed that difference from the 12PM immediately.
It's like I'm covered in butter and have gone to scrolling heaven. 🤤

dont blame ya for not waiting.
I got 13PM Friday and sent back the 12PM with the trade in kit that I got that day as well and put it in a UPS Dropbox, and it was delivered to Apple today.
Same. I actually received my new phone and my return box in the same delivery, which, from what I’m reading, seems unusual. I sent the trade in phone back the very next day. It just delivered 20 minutes ago.

I don’t blame people for being uncomfortable, though, either. An error on UPS’ side can lead to a lot of headache, which sucks. Just went through that with FedEx over an unrelated shipment.

Update to my iPhone 13 odyssey (not that anyone really cares, but it's therapeutic for me 😁).

I got an update from UPS a little after midnight that my package had cleared customs and had been cleared by a government agency. Other than that, I had no clear idea now if my phone was in Louisville or ZhengZhou.

I called UPS International Shipping a while ago and spoke to rep there. He checked on it and said that there had been some sort of "miscommunication" in Louisville with some of the packages, but that my phone had been cleared and would soon be departing Louisville.

I asked him why the tracking had previously shown my phone to be at my local hub last Friday and he said that my package had been "logically" scanned, not "physically" scanned. Hoo boy.

He said hopefully tomorrow, but maybe Thursday.

Yeah I got a call from the apple excutive I have been working with since I wrote Tim Cook about the 5 minute past getting in preorders and missing opening day again. I explained all the things I found here in these threads and looking elsewhere. She pretty much admitted that apple is clueless as to what is going on with all the phones sitting in China or wherever since early Saturday which is not much of a help. Yours is a 9/24 phone I was a 10/6 to 10/11 phone at 5 past opening day (how long it took me to get in to store to complete preapproved preorder) but they sound in same boat and time. Wonder if mine was stuck in the Louisville limbo rather than China? However you have Louisville scanning as I do not so not likely. Who knows now. What a mess and UPS is not much of a help either it seems to me

But does that apply as well if you selected to send you old device by mail? Can I just take my old device back to the store with my new phone and credit card and they will take it?

I don’t remember seeing any other option when I was placing my pre-order. Even though I chose in-store pickup for my order, I was shown that a trade-in kit would be sent to me to return the 12PM. I assumed that was my only option until the Apple Specialist said I could do it with them in-store.

He did ask if I was on a carrier upgrade plan, so that may make a difference. I didn’t bother to ask more details about it since it didn’t apply for me.

I'm going to call my local store now and inquire, because my phone was paid outright as well, and I'm also within the 14-days, Thanks for the info.

Just called them now, and they said that since I already have the trade in kit coming my way, I was not able to trade in the phone at the store, makes no sense because when purchasing the phone you have no option to select "in store trade in option"

I wish you well and get it soon.
I actually understand about the ‘logical’ scan vs. physical scan, even if a few get fouled up. Probably what they have to do when they have such a bulk order all at once. They were probably all logical until the shipping containers were split in Louisville.
I’ve been following this thread and feel bad for folks like you and rrjacobson and a few others.
hopefully they will get y’all’s orders out of the cracks they fell in.
:)

Try walking in and see what happens. Don’t mention about a kit coming.

All I said was, “Mike told me to come back in my 14-day window and someone would be able to take care of this trade-in.” (This is what I was actually told.)

No arguments received, a specialist came over to help me out, he didn’t ask if a kit was on its way and he didn’t search the system for one either.

Yep, it wasn't a problem. I paid in full for the phone, no special month to month carrier payments. No 24-30 month carrier deals.

Clicked "trade in" (up to $790-iPhone 12 Pro Max).
They physically looked at exterior condition of the phone, which didn't have a single scratch. Ran diagnostics, issued the money back to my original payment. Took about 10 minutes.

The empty cardboard trade in kit box just gets ditched into the recycle trashcan.
I'll probably get a few emails from Apple in the next 7-10 days, "We haven't received your iPhone yet." I can just ignore that.

I know in another thread I saw Friday morning, some Apple Stores were not letting a few return the old phone in store, like past years - it has to be sent back via the trade in box. Odd, some were in California, other locations. I guess that is a "stores decision."

Same here. I never mentioned a trade in kit to anyone and they never asked. Just said "I bought the new phone, I'm here to return the old one for credit."

I don't think they even looked at my order number at all. They did scan my new phone for some ID number I guess...but that's it. The refund was issued, they asked "what is your email, we'll sent the receipt of the transaction to that." I got that 30 seconds after the Apple employee sent the email. Very easy smooth transaction

They scan the serial number and the IMEI on the old device to make sure it’s clean and isn’t tied to a carrier. The new device is how they find your account - because I didn’t have anything related to my order at all. He didn’t even know my name or anything. I could have been anybody. 😂

That's kinda what I was thinking regarding the logical scans.

What the heck are logical scans? Was still not clear the difference

I lifted this from Reddit. A pretty good explanation, though it may or may not apply.
A logical scan is a scan on the outer container that the package is in, either a bag, or trailer. When that outer container is emptied then the package should receive a physical scan on it. If that doesn't happen then the package could have been miss loaded, or may not even be in UPS possession. Many of the large shippers load their own trailers and upload their information into the UPS system, and UPS does not know if the package is actually in their possession until that trailer is unloaded at a UPS facility

Thanks I was just looking at that now. Very interesting
