Arrrgh! The blokes at Apple still haven;t fixed USB eject on 10.9.2.. I guess I have 2 options... Find a different chipset or Write an app to do the auto eject on all devices with the Fresco Logic vendor ID..

How lazy can they get? It's not like they are short of cash to fix the situation....

Big surprise ... the Apple way is not to update your expensive high end machine with a 15 bucks part after 3 years, it is to update your expensive high end machine with an expensive high end machine after 3 years.

Exactly why I am going to "stick" on 10.8.5 for a while, in fact I have only been
using it for a couple of months!!
I stuck with 10.6.8 for over three years .... SO stable, really.

I have to go to ML for software update reasons, otherwise I would STILL be on
10.6.8 !!

So, no 10.9.x problems for me.

What size are the D800 files that you produce?

Are they Raw? JPG?

I am guess that you download direct from the camera?

Does the D800 support tethered shooting? Have you tried it with the Inateck card?

I apologise for all the questions! :) dSLR photography and photography in general is one of my interests (my wife calls it an obsession…) along with Macs, model making, Les Pauls, keyboards, Lego…. etc etc :) :)

Thanks!

Hi Robert, don't worry here we are for that :)

the size I transfer and the type was RAW files around 74mb each one and yes I download them direct from camera ;)

About the tethered shooting, sorry but I don't test I don't have the camera control pro, but if you know another app for do that tell me it and I will try to test it for you.

My wife says that one day perhaps forget one of my daughter but never forget my camera :)

I found the a fix to the Sleep / USB3.0 - The drive has been ejected issue

Looking for solutions outside Apple to fix the MacPro USB ejection HELL we are all stuck in, I turned to the developer community and discovered Jettison 3.0 by StClairSoft. After emailing the developer, I was directed to a more powerful version 3.0, that's not available on the mac App Store .

From the developer: "Once installed, by holding down the Option key and choosing "Preferences with Extras" from the Jettison menu. Click on the Extras tab and there are two popup menus that allow you to specify drives to eject and not eject." Good news as I want to eject my USB drives and keep my SATA drives managed by the OS.

Sure enough, it works as advertised. A simple $4.99 solution to FIX Apple's borked USB drivers. This should also take care of issues nMP owners are having with their Thunderbolt drives as well.

The app has a 14 day free trial for those who are concerned whether it will work for their situation. I'll be pulling out my credit card to support of this dev who clearly has delivered a fix that has plagued our systems for far too long!

One more fix in the basket for today!!!

Here's the link: For those who missed the embedded link to the App - here it is: http://www.stclairsoft.com/Jettison/index.html

Might have missed it but does the new 4 port Inateck power cable free and driverless card support sleep mode OK?

Yes (with quirkiness caused by Mavericks), read Post#1 and Post# 608. Also look at the post just before yours.

Thanks can't believe I missed that bit on post #1, my main idea was to add extra ports as my USB 2 Hub is nearly full but figured I may as well get USB 3.0 whilst doing this. I put my machine to sleep when not in use so support for that is important.

Will bare in mind that USB external disks may/will eject when sleeping, hopefully the OS X drivers will get fixed in an update at some point as there is not much sign of larger internal disks coming at affordable prices.

Well, if you look at post# 710, there is a way to deal with the drives ejecting already.

I read the small print it looks like you can buy the Mac App Store version for the cheaper price - then drop the app version off the site in applications which preserves the licence from the App Store. Have to run it from the DMG first.

http://www.stclairsoft.com/Jettison/faq.html#3

Think I'll grab that tomorrow - when I finally have some time to plug the unpowered Inateck card in!

I found installing the Inateck 4 port USB3 card in Macpro1,1 not very easy if you have al the HDD bays occupied.

Maybe someone find this information useful on how I connect the power cables to the USB3 cards. You can use google translator, as this is in spanish.

Google translator version in english

Original in spanish

Javi

Javi,

The new Inateck card for Mac Pro doesn't have any cables to worry about. It's self powered. You have an older revision card.

NEW (?) NewerTech USB3.0 + eSATA Adapters

I came across these two new adapters from OWC / Macsales.com late last week.

NewerTech MAXPower USB/eSATA 2x2 Host Adapter
Mfr P/N: MXPCIE2E2U3
OWC SKU: NWTMXPCIE2E2U3

NewerTech MAXPower 2-port eSATA 6Gb/s & 2-port USB 3.0 PCIe Controller Card
Mfr P/N: MXPCIEL2ESU3
OWC SKU: NWTMXPCIEL2ESU3

I could not ascertain which chip they use. Regardless, they do not require special drivers for MacPros! Also, each USB port has a separate controller, I believe.

They are, however, slightly different in a few respects and that might be significant, depending on the user. Check the fine print!

The price is the same for each: US$130.

Has anyone tried one?

I have this one from OWC in a Mac Pro 2.1 purchased January 2013 and I assume it is the PCI slots in that 7 year old MP that is the bottle neck as the speed tools tests are about 20 percent slower then my 2012 MBP via USB3.0 to the same external drive.

Quantity: 1 CDGU3HOSTADPTR, $87.99 each
CalDigit 2 Port USB 3.0 SuperSpeed PCI Express Card for Mac Pro or Windows PC with PCI express slot. With speeds of up to 5 Gbps, USB 3.0 is faster than eSATA or FireWire and is now available for the Mac Pro! 1 Year CalDigit Warranty.

It works like a champ. Just plugged it in and never thought about it again.

I think it has been replaced by this one which includes estata http://eshop.macsales.com/item/CalDigit/FASTA6GU3PRO/

From the product page:
Important Note: This Card does not support Apple OS X Sleep. Sleep should be disabled when using devices with this card. NewerTech has reported a potential xHCI bug to Apple regarding sleep and we hope that Sleep support will exist in the future. If you require OS X Sleep Support, The NewerTech Driver Enabled version of this card is available and this version fully supports OS X Sleep.

EDIT: I forgot to mention it uses a Marvell chipset.

Two Different OWC NewerTech Adapters

There are two different cards. One supports sleep and the other does not. The information is under SPECS on the OWC/Macsales site.

MXPCIE2E2U3 - Does NOT support sleep. "If you require OS X Sleep Support, The NewerTech Driver Enabled version of this card is available and this version fully supports OS X Sleep."

MXPCIEL2ESU3 - DOES support sleep, but "**Connected drives may take approximately 30 seconds for the volume to reappear".

Both, however, are advertised to work with OS X 10 without drivers. One works only with more recent OS X, while the other goes back as far as 10.5.6.
But the sleep function supported on the card ending in -2U3 DOES seems to require some driver? Huh?

There are other differences, too, which which will make one or the other card interesting depending your situation, e.g., external chassis Thunderbolt support, Windows support or no Windows support, etc. I suggest one carefully compare the two adapters to see which set of specs works best for you.

I wonder if these cards have different controller ships. If the MXPCIE2E2U3 is a Marvell chip that works with OSX/ no drivers, I wonder if the other model is also a Marvell chip? Same chip?

I like the idea of having independent controller lines, thereby not having to split in half the speed of transfers.

Check the fine print at the site!

Hmmmm. A $20 fresco logic based card and a $5 Utility sounds a lot less complicated. Then again ymmv.

By the way, the app also supports thunderbolt attached devices, which I hear are also plaguing the new Mac Pro with ejection issues
with sleep. LOL.

Driverless, unpowered, stable, not ultra fast but reliable though versus problems. I know what I would buy for sure.

I bought the app from the Mac App Store expecting to try it out Sunday with the new Inateck card - then 3 HP probooks arrived without warning requiring 7 downgrades for Monday. Damn you and thank you Bill Gates. Way it's going it might be weeks before I get a chance to tinker with the 3,1 and repaste the CPU's!

These just hit the market so I feel it is too early to say they are stable and reliable. On the other hand I feel that those attributes are likely, since OWC does generally have a good reputation.

The driverless one sounds like it has the same sleep problems as the FL cards. In fact, this is all pointing more and more to Apple's driver in OS X.
