Nope. It's internal design. Internal space. The less things taking that space, the better you can make the phone. Give you a quick example:

Let's say new battery tech came out and you could get the same battery life out of a battery that was physically 1/2 the size. You could then do any of the following, including innumerable other things that I'm not listing:

•Greatly enhance the speaker quality
•Add a 3rd or 4th camera sensor to the rear of the device
•Add numerous new sensors to the rear and face of the device, for AR capabilities

I can't make excuses for Apple's lack of innovation. They simply removed the headphone jack without anything better to take its place. It takes courage to do that. Other companies make better looking products.

I honestly prefer lightning at this point. I don't have any devices that use USB-C but have a few that use lightning and I've amassed many cords over the years of getting so many Apple devices. I would appreciate lighting to USB-C at some point in the future so you could use it with the newer MacBooks, but it might all be OTA at that point

They removed the headphone jack for internal space. Now, you can choose not to believe that like you can choose not to believe the Earth is round, unfortunately the truth is not what you believe.

I suggest though, that you look at the internal design from the iPhone 6s to the iPhone 7 and actually visually see for yourself why it allowed the Taptic Engine to be larger.

Lightning is so much better as a connector compared to usb c. It's to bad they didn't make the lightning-design to be usb c!

If they ever remove the lightning port, it'll be because they have internet recovery available, wireless charging working well, and not because they're replacing it with USB-C.

And to add to that, they still have a headphone port via the lightning port and/or adapter in the box.

Simple answer: bottom line impact. More complicated answer: Apple wants to delay a switch to USB-C tech as long as possible because it forces people to buy lightning adaptors and replacement ones because they are cheaply manufactured and break often. They won't switch to USB Type C fully because they can get a hybrid between lightning and USB Type C. At some point, they have to implement some facet because Android's bleeding edge will continue to grow with extra bells and whistles people do not need, but are hyped into buying.

Biggest draw: uniformity. I rather have cables that charge phones regardless if iPhone or Android. Right now, it's a cluttered mess between micro USB, USB-C, and Lightning. Though one could argue quick charge, but I think that isn't exclusive to USB Type C since micro USB tied into Qualcomm's QC abilities since that has to do with the internal components rather than just a port.

But they already implemented USB-C in the MacBooks. If Apple really wanted to sell more cables they could have a proprietary charger for MacBooks too.

Wireless charging only works if you have a charging pad. Not every place uses them yet, so if you have to charge your phone at a place without one, you’re out of luck.

I mean, if you're travelling somewhere that you'll need to charge your phone (like a trip or vacation) don't people usually bring what is needed to charge?

But anyway, I don't think it's something that will happen anytime soon.

  1. USB-C is physically bigger than Lightning. It's not a lot bigger but when you're fighting for every millimeter of space.
  2. USB-C is a standard which, while more open and compatible, is also less flexible. With Lightning, Apple can do whatever they want, whenever they want. That means, if some cool new technology emerges next year, Apple can implement it immediately without having to wait for a standards body to to come to an agreement
  3. USB-C would require another port change for customers. Many people weren't very happy with the last one, and Lightning was 10 years after Dock. It's only been 5 years since Lightning.

Im fine with lightning port on the phone, but why isnt the other end USB-C?

West Coast = Best Coast
Because all the power outlets to charge with the USB->Lightning connector are USB. If apple changed to USB-C tomorrow, many people, including myself would be upset.

You can buy a USB-C cord from Apple... but when you're talking about the lowest common denominator, most people have a standard USB charger already. In the form of a either a wallwort, laptop or built into their car. nit many people have USB-C readily available in their daily lives.

I find the lack of USB C on the iPhone to be one of the most irritating things about it... especially when they went all in with the same port in my new MacBook Pro. It makes such little sense.

My post was mostly in reference to how their new Macbooks all have only USB-C because its the way of the future but yet their new iPhones still have lightning to USB. Strange how they include lightning to USB in their phones because its the most common port yet change their macs despite usb being the most common port. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

because not all iPhone users have macs.

Because the vast majority of computers currently in use do not have USB-C ports.

USB-C may be the future, but most people are still living in the present.

Yes but all iPhones are Apple products.

I'll be an apple nut for a long time but a few decisions like this one is just plain stupid and irritating. There's no way to justify or defend this decision of Apple. For the short time that I had a Google Pixel 2 XL, the fact that I could unplug the power cord out of my mac and plug it directly into the phone was just such a pleasure. Now, I can utilize the larger MacBook Pro charger for my iPhone for fast charging, but ... I have to purchase a USB C to lightening cord. More so, I have to unplug the cord for the computer from the power adapter base and replace the cord to work with the iPhone. I mean, I know we all love Apple, but to justify this and defend this decision is crazy.

PS: If I plug my USB C - lightening cable from my computer to my phone, will I have fast charging?

Aren't the new macbook's charged via USB-C? It would be awesome if I could just use my macbook charger to charge my iphone.

I wanted the quick charging option, so I bought the USB C to Lightning cable and the 29w charger. You can certainly do that now.

I feel like that is the future (and it’s very fast) but it was 80 bucks for the cable and 29w block...

They should have packed it in with the X, but they didn’t.

Apple is a brand, not your friend. As a brand, Apple's first duty is to make money. Apple doesn’t need to incentivize their product in order for it to sell.
