Intel has finally launched the 10nm H class chips for MBP 16. Long awaited but now M is on the way.

1. Do we think Apple will silent update the existing H class while we wait for M in 16 inch?
2. Will it be wiser to wait for M class? I imagine Intel may have an advantage on high end with discrete graphics.

I’d be willing to bet that Apple is pretty much done with Intel at this point other than offering software updates for their existing Intel machines. The 16" will get the M1-X (or whatever it will be called).

At this point Apple now sells an iPad Pro that can outrun the 16” on benchmarks… Thats not a good look and I doubt Apple is okay with it.

Don't mind me... Just waiting on the announcement - release. I love juicing my laptops as much as I can and not upgrading that often. So I am looking forward to the upgrade from my current Late 2013 MBP 15", should be an interesting day!

Do you guys think the Quanta leak will also be a factor for a WWDC release?
I hope so! I am excited to go to a WWDC event this year via Zoom/Virtual. It is happening this June/July! I wonder if they're going to announce officially which M chip the new 14 and 16 inch macbooks will have! I would be super happy if the chips would be the M1X one.

I think going from Intel to the Apple Silicon will be a big step for Apple, especially for their MacBooks! I have the website here! And I am excited!

I think so too! It seemed like there was such little to gain from 2013 to 2021 in terms of raw performance in the Intel mobile processor market.

One reason I had not updated from my Late 2013 MBP. I'm really stoked to try out the 16 MBP with Apple Silicon.

My 2019 MacBook 16 inch is the Intel but it is super solid. But I am stoked that there will be a Apple Silicon version of my current laptop. Macs seem to really last a good while regardless of its processor. Your late 2013 can still be a wonderful backup laptop. The M1X and M2 are supposed to be much faster and more powerful which will be very helpful for heavy duty activities like video editing and photoshop! I know I will be hanging on to my current one for awhile and then get my new 16 inch with the better M Chip later on, like 2024 or 2025.

Yes! I plan to keep it within family for the moment, and won't upgrade until the MXX (M1X, M2, or whatever name convention they end up using) comes out.

That's actually a great idea to keep your macs in the family, nice hand me downs. The best ways to get the most out of these great machines! I am planning on just waiting a few years before getting the newer 2021 MacBook anyway. I can get a lot out of my current one anyway.

So are we thinking announcement at WWDC or in the fall at the iPhone event?
It's anyones guess at this point. The last 12 months have certainly proved that Apple does not have any obligation to stick to any yearly pattern. However, the iPhone events are usually reserved for the iPhone and other smaller category devices (maybe AirPods 3). My bets are still on WWDC for the following reasons:

1. We got leaked schematics for the 14" which shows the design has at the very least progressed to the point of being ready to produce (or it could already be in mass production). The fact that the iMac schematics leaked along with it gives it some credibility.

2. We had reports of the M2 (probably the M1-X) going into mass production and being ready to ship by July. Last year, we got a similar report in September for the A14X (which ended up being the M1), which released in November. This roughly 3 month gap between mass production and product launch seems to match up.

3. WWDC is a pro user oriented event. It gets a littler more nerdy than the consumer focused iPhone events. This event is for Apple developers and it makes perfect sense to announce their developer focused hardware at this event.

4. The new iMac has dual fans and an overall thermal design that is overkill for the M1... but would make perfect sense for the M1-X.

5. We have reports of the next generation M2 (along with the new MacBook Air) being prepared to start production later in the year with shipments coming in the late fall / winter. It doesn’t make any sense to release an M1-X at the same event as the M2. I think the cadence will be new M chip generation in the fall along with the lower end models and the beefy pro chip in the summer.

edit: I should also add the fact that currently the new iPad Pro has more CPU power than the current 16"... just let that set in... I'm sure Apple isn't okay with that.

My thinking is we will see the new 14", 16" and iMac Pro at WWDC with shipment dates starting in early July. All of them will use the M1-X with the 16" and iMac Pro getting a graphics bump with either a dedicated Apple made GPU or just more GPU cores (maybe raytracing abilities). Expect to see companies like Autodesk, Maxon, Adobe and Unreal showing off the new graphics performance and CPU power. Then at the November event, we will see the new MacBook Air, Mac mini and base model 14" pro with the M2 chip and perhaps a "one more thing" for the new Mac Pro with dual M2 and beefy graphics with a launch of early 2022.

Can't wait. I hate my 2020 Intel MBP. It's hot, it's loud, one fan has a bad bearing only one year after purchase.

Colleges start in August-September,so it’s better the new mbp be available by August end.
Agree 100%.

My bets are WWDC right now but if WWDC proves false, maybe we could see a surprise July or August event.

Anything after that and it makes no sense to put an M1 (A14 based) based processor in. We’d be looking at an A15 based chip.

My Macbook Pro is a late 2011 model, apart from a SSD upgrade..its still going when many windows laptops would of died years ago.
But I am now wanting to upgrade..so bring on the new Macbooks, cant wait.....!

If they are available then they'll like be excluded from the back to school promo. One possibility is that they get released pretty much as soon as returns for products sold in the back to school promo period end

If you have the discrete graphics that is doing pretty well. The discrete graphics in the 15" has high failure rates.

I still have 2009 Mac Minis, the 2011 Mac Mini and four 2011 iMacs (the iMacs have the discrete graphics but somehow they have survived). My laptop is the mid-2014 rMBP. I would like to upgrade but would want the 2021 MBP to have 32+ GB of RAM and support at least two external displays if not three.

I have passed on my MBA to my wife who needed a new machine and am using a Mac VM of all things to wait until the new 14" machines arrive, strangely the only reason I ever needed more than 16GB was top run Windows VMs, but there's little point to that anymore so 16GB+1TB will be fine for me. I just want the re-design and hopefully mini-LED screen.
