At the moment I have the 15" MacBook Pro from 2018 and gonna wait for the 14" MacBook Pro 2021 with M1. I hope the rumors are true and we will the it as soon as possible and not much more expensive than the current 13" one.

I think we are going to see a reshuffle of the MacBook Pro lineup. Especially since the current 13” Air and base 13” Pro are in an odd spot... I can see Apple discontinuing the current M1 13” Pro.

I’m thinking the lineup and pricing will look something like this:

- 14” MacBook Pro with M1 (8 core GPU version) - $1299 (replacing the current M1 13”)

- 14” MacBook Pro with M1-X (12 GPU cores) - $1799 (replacing the current 4 port 13”)

- 16” MacBook Pro with M1-X (16 GPU cores) - $2399 (replacing current 16”)

The question is now: Macbook Air or MBP 13"? They seem to be almost identical. 200 dollar more or less don't matter. What is the better choice?

Thanks for any input.
If you're pretty set on getting the 14" / 16" MBPs whenever they release later this fall, you might as well get the M1 Macbook Air. Save the $200, it's still a great machine for a few months, and on the margin, I would think the resale value of the M1 MBA won't be hit as much as the current M1 13" MBP will when the 14"/16" are released.

It's not clear how much the 13" M1 MBP value will decrease upon the launch (it might not at all depending on price point of the 14", etc.), but there's probably some non-zero risk there of price depreciation. Which I would imagine won't exist (or will exist less) in the MBA.

You really think the 14" at $1799 will come with M1x and mini led? its kind of cheap for what we get
If apple indeed can bring mini-led into their laptops..dont expect that starting price IF it will have M1x in it

That would be great. I can’t wait to buy a new MacBook. But I should wait because I think the 14“ will be the right one for me

Entry level 14" at that price would do me nicely, here's hoping.:)

I guess we will have to wait and see. Luckily adding miniLED to the iPad Pro only bumped up the price $100 so if there is a price increase, maybe it will be small. On the other hand though, just looking back over the last couple years:

- Current 16” MacBook Pro cost the same as the 15” it was replacing (and that was with bigger screen, slight chassis changes, new cooling system, new generation AMD graphics cards, new keyboard, new speakers, new mics, new battery, etc.)
- New iMacs cost the same (and that’s with a pretty major redesign)
- M1 MacBook Air, Mini and 13” Pro all kept the same price

Taking all of that into account and also considering that Apple will have some cost savings by dropping the Touch Bar and using their own chips rather than Intel, I think its certainly possible that the current prices will stay.

Personally, I don't think they will get rid of the 13" but add the 14" and 16". Also highest end will have the mini led option.

dont look at those...look when apple change the displays tech...how the 15" cMBP was priced vs first retina 15" mbp for example. iMac is a good value and they kept the price but also the same type of display
So, again IF apple will come with both mini-Led and M1x lets see...(They will keep the 13" Mbp M1 until 2022)
So, i think apple can let us CTO from M1 to M1X for 300-400$ and probably 100$ increase because of mini-led
So, my guessing is the 14" mini-led with M1x to start from $1999 with 512 ssd and 16 gb Ram
But we will see...but at $1799 i see apple cut that price only if they put 256ssd and 8gb ram

If you want an M1 mbp for that price...why dont you go with the current 13.3" Mbp with M1...its an excellent product
If you want 13" mini-led i dont think the starting price to be the same as the current M1 13" Mbp @ $1299

I would but I want the updated design MacBook.
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro still going strong but very dated now.

Think ultimately I will make decision once the new models get announced and see what’s the best option for me.

Sorry but I’d have to disagree. Any big changes Apple has made to a product without increasing the price (especially the big changes to the 16” MBP and the new iMac) should be considered for pricing patterns. We are all just guessing so at this point everything is valid… I still stick by it being a possibility that prices stay where they are now and if there is a price increase it should be a pretty modest one for Apple to stay competitive.

When it comes to Mini LED, it’s actually less expensive to manufacture in larger sizes. It’s somewhat similar to OLED in that the larger the screen is, the better and cheaper production is (this is why Samsung can offer their 4K mini LED TVs at the same introductory price as last years non mini LEDs). I’d say the iPad Pro with its uncommon screen size (and requiring touch and fitting everything into a thin tablet package) only going up by $100 is a very good sign.

Again we are all just guessing here but judging by Apples patterns I’d say it will all depend on how they position the 14”. From my Apple expert armchair 😂 I see it going one of two ways:

1. Apple introduces the 14” with the M1-X and it directly replaces the $1799 4 port 13” model. In this case the base M1 13” should stick around.

2. Apple introduces the M1-X 14” and also introduces an entry level M1 14” with possibly less ports. In this case, I see Apple phasing out the current M1 13” while supplies last.

Of course both guesses could be wrong but at this point I’d put my bet on #2 for a couple reasons:

- It better differentiates the MacBook Air from the base MacBook Pro. At this point the MacBook Air can do everything just as good as the 13” Pro for less $$$. By adding a bigger and better quality screen and more ports, the base 14” can now stand out against the Air even when using the same M1.

- If Apple really is going to get rid of the touchbar on the new 14 and 16, it just doesn’t make much sense to keep the base 13” around with touchbar.

I think that the 14" $1,799 models will still include an M1 chip and you will have to upgrade to the high end 14" and base 16" to get the M1X. I just received my M1 13" MBP 16GB refurb model yesterday and since I got it for $1211 after taxes, I'll gladly wait for M3X. :D

Even if I returned it to wait for the 14", I don't want to spend $2k+ for a laptop. I'll wait for M2X or M3X in 3-4 years from now and get another refurb.

Agree, and yes...Apple will keep the 13" until 2022 for sure
The only 13" Apple is going to keep is the M1 Air. The Air will be the affordable thin and light, the 14" and 16" will be the more powerful, professional solutions. Absolutely no reason to keep a 13" Pro around after the 14" and 16" are announced. Besides, the 13" Pro has that seriously dumb Touch Bar, and I'm pretty sure Apple wants to distance itself from that failure as soon as they can.

They’ll just keep the 13” Pro around so they can say the MacBook Pro starts at $1299. The $800 gap between the $999 MBA and the $1799 14” MBP would be too large; you need something in the middle between them as a stepping stone of gradual upsell :)

Ideally I would love a 13inch Macbook Pro with the new design which is coming to the 14" and 16".

Going to be a interesting few months to see what's coming.

What I guess / suspect they'll do is make a two-port 14" MBP a year or so after the four-port 14" releases (give all the New Design Freaks time to shell out for the four-port) with an M2 variant with fewer cores, no mini-LED, and less max RAM / storage.

Do you guys think mini-LED on the 14/16" will be an upsell feature, or included with all configurations?

Kuo seems to think it will even be coming to the Air in 2022 so I assume they're just going all in on it.

I really hope they're not coming on Oktober/November, but earlier.
My credit card is ready :D

This will be the first time purchase above $200 where I won't wait for reviews before buying. Hope that isn't a mistake. But I guess initial orders will be 5x higher than available units.

You and me both!

I think the leaks of the 14” schematics, the report of the M2 (most likely the M1-X) going into mass production and the way Apple handled the new iMac launch all point to a possible WWDC announcement. Judging by the iMac launch we could see a longer delay than usual from the announcement to the actual launch.

If we get an announcement at WWDC, we could see availability within the first half of July. So maybe something like: Announcement on June 7th, Preorders on June 11th (or 18th) and availability on July 2nd (or 9th). I guess we will see.

I agree also - and that would great if that were the case! I'm also likely a Day-1 pre-order for the 16" assuming it's in-line with what most ppl think it is / pricepoint, etc.
