Folks, I like snappy computers and scale up my resolution to 3360x2100 and use 2 external 4K monitors - that's a lot of work and my 2019" 6-core with 555x 4GB gets a bit slow with all that.

Do you think that I should get a maxed out GPU on the upcoming 16", or even the base one will be good enough?
Of course maxed out GPU.

The Radeon 5600 works in a different way that takes away most of the problem. So with external screens, you should cough up that extra money.
As for me, I want it ASAP. I'm basically tired of waiting, because I'm actually pretty fine (except that I need to unplug the external screen for Teams calls, but since the 16" is my home machine and I work mostly from the office again, it's a fairly minor quibble).

A new story on the Front Page pegs back to school campaign ending Sep 27th in the USA and Oct 11th in Europe. That's 15 days and 1 day prior to Tuesday October 12th.

Seems likely to me that Oct 12th is the day... after all these months and false dawns.
Would make sense early October and 1 month after the iPhone event...

I know that 5600 would have worked for me, but I never bought it because the AS was supposed to be "right around the corner." I regret not buying it, but oh well.

The thing is that I can afford paying extra $$ for any maxed out GPU on the upcoming AS, but built to order models will probably come with 3-6 week delay, so I am really curious if base 16" with Apple Silicone would work for me!

Sorry, I misunderstood. Higher spec GPUs are for 3D graphics or specific calculations. Any 2D work has been a piece of cake for GPUs for the last 20 years. So if you play games or do CAD, or if you convert videos or work in AI, yes, you should think of getting the higher GPU. If it's for connecting more screens for "normal" use, no.

Base model 16” GPU performance is definitely something I’m looking forward to learning about. I wrote a pretty long post about it a page or 2 back but the short version is this:

There are (2) versions of the M1X chip. Jade-C Chop and Jade-C Die. Jade-C Chop is the smaller chip with 16 GPU cores and lower power draw. Jade-C Die is the larger chip with 32 GPU cores and higher power draw. 16 GPU cores gets you somewhere near the performance of the current 2019 16” with the mid-high range GPU option while the 32 core GPU gets you somewhere near the performance of a 3070m.

We are all just guessing here and there hasn’t been any solid leaks for this stuff yet but I’m thinking the 16” comes standard with the Jade-C Die chip and here’s why:

1. The 16” (15”) has always been positioned as its own product. It’s not just a larger MacBook Pro. They are marketed as the ultimate Apple laptop and GPU performance has continually been a major differentiator between the 13” and the 16” (15”) even at the base model.

2. The 16” will have more thermal headroom and a larger battery which can support the larger Jade-C Die chip.

3. From a manufacturing perspective, it doesn’t make sense for Apple to mass produce a larger version of the M1X that would only be used in a small fraction of 16” models sold. Plus when manufacturing GPUs, not all of the cores are functional for every chip. Manufacturing defects happen and this is where selling a “binned” version comes in handy. I highly doubt Apple would force every Jade-C Die chip to have all 32 cores functional… That would require throwing out a lot of chips… Same goes for the smaller Jade-C Chop and it’s 16 cores. Let’s not forget we are still going through a chip shortage and cost of materials is rising so Apple will need to make use of as many chips as possible.

What makes more sense is:

- Jade-C Chop for all 14 models. Base model 14” comes with 12 or 14 functional GPU cores and the option to upgrade to the full 16 core.

- Jade-C Die for all 16” models. Base model 16” comes with a binned version that has 24-28 functional GPU cores with the option to upgrade to the full 32.

In this case, the base model 16” would offer decent GPU performance and a very good upgrade over the nearly 2 year old 2019 model.

As the iPad and iPad mini were unveiled yesterday, can we expect to see the Macbook 14 and 16 alongside the iPad Pro and iPad Air at the October Event?

Or will they fill the October Event with iPad Pro, Air and Homepod so we'll have to wait until November?

Why should they fill the October event with the iPad Pro? It got its update for this year…

It was good to see the iPad being part of yesterday’s event - leaves things clear for a decent Mac-focused keynote in the next while.

Just need to resolve the 14 v 16” argument in my mind….
I just really hope it's a H1 October event, I think those extra couple of weeks if they decide to have it late in the month are going to be excruciating 😂

At least with it being virtual they can plan to do them at much shorter notice than the traditional ones, but I really hope its the week or so after iPhone pre-orders are out the way!

oh come on - if apple snaps with their finger for a regular held event, half the world would stand on their doormat 2 days later.

A 10/12 event with 10/5 invites would be awesome. Give the iPhone launch 11 days to breathe and then start the whole process over again. :)

This means we could be less than three weeks away from invites!!

[Updated June 22, 2020]

Starting a new "waiting" thread since the 2020 13" MBP is out.

Although I'm on a 2019 base 16", I do miss the 13" form factor when carrying the machine around the house. The smaller 13" was better for taking from the desk to the couch, or from the couch to the bed.

I seriously thought about selling the 16" and going with the 10th-gen Ice Lake 13", but I'm now leaning on waiting for either Tiger Lake or ARM, possible in a revised 14" form factor. It's also unclear whether the Touch Bar is going to remain or whether Apple will admit defeat like they did with the butterfly keyboards.

What do you guys think? What are the "must have" features for a next-generation 13" MBP? I'm thinking:

  • 14" Mini-LED display with thinner bezels in the same chassis as the current 2020 13"
  • Tiger Lake U series chip (assuming MBP stays on Intel) with 4 cores and Gen 12 Xe-based graphics
  • ARM-based Apple CPU/SoC
  • Revised webcam (1080p), Face ID as a nice-to-have
  • 4 Thunderbolt 3 / USB4 ports
  • Removal of Touch Bar / return of function keys
  • Wifi 6
As for folks who want a 16":
  • Mini-LED display
  • Tiger Lake H series chip (assuming MBP stays on Intel) with up to 10 cores and Gen 12 Xe-based graphics
  • ARM-based Apple CPU/SoC
  • AMD RDNA2 dGPU
  • Revised webcam (1080p), Face ID as a nice-to-have
  • 4 Thunderbolt 3 / USB4 ports
  • Removal of Touch Bar / return of function keys
  • Wifi 6
I suspect Apple might do a silent refresh of the 16" for 2020 with Comet Lake, but I could see them going straight to Tiger Lake Apple Silicon since Comet Lake (10th Gen H) is just a speed-bump of Coffee Lake Refresh (9th Gen H).
Remove touch bar; I found an app to disable it.
Put in "real" USB port so my CD ROM drive doesn't need YET another Apple cable.
Mag Safe
Chip that will allow Windows 11 to work in VM; I really only need DOS to play very old shareware games like the original Duke Nukem.

I hope the rumours hold, and this will be an epic upgrade like the IPad mini, after this exhausting wait.

But I am not sure if I will be excited about the mini led display, given the issues about blooming.

I am also uncertain about the MacBook Pros getting an Oled display next year, if they chose to go mini led.
