I think that this launch has too much hype for its own good.
Too many users looking to upgrade their 2016-2019 lackluster machines... easily the worst Apple notebook design ever.
This will inevitably lead to Apple inflating prices and screwing over needful users being forced to buy.
Switching to M1 1 year ago really feels like a smart move right now... I'll probably wait for M2x.

It's not just 2016-19 owners. It's all the 2010-2015 owners who refused to upgrade due to how bad the MBPs were during 16-19. So many people held on way longer than they would have normally.

But to say it was a smart move to switch to M1 a year ago, is purely a case by case situation. For some who only wanted or needed a 13 inch machine then absolutely. But for others who needed a bigger screen or a few other things, then absolutely it wasn't a smart move unless you got a plan for the M1 (like me giving to family). I think these machines are going to blow the M1s away.

As for prices. It's been reported the 14 is more expensive, but it's a total redesign and bigger than the 13 so that was always going to happen. And reports say (rumors only) that the 16 won't be more expensive. Personally I see them going up 100 bucks, but who knows.

And you waiting for M2X means less waiting time for the rest of us! That's a win for both of us!!!

How long do you want to wait?
What exactly do you expect from M2X?

M2x = 2x single core performance compared to M1x and increased power efficiency.

It's to be expected from the switch to ARM-V9, also M2 will be subject to the same improvements.

I wouldn't like to spend $2399 on a top end notebook only to be jeopardized in single core performance by their $999 notebook after six months once again.

But hey, to each their own. I'm suffering from the 13" screen actually. I've even bought a 15" USB-C portable display.

I hope the rumours hold, and this will be an epic upgrade like the IPad mini, after this exhausting wait.

But I am not sure if I will be excited about the mini led display, given the issues about blooming.

I am also uncertain about the MacBook Pros getting an Oled display next year, if they chose to go mini led.
I personally think these new Macs will be the biggest updates of the year. Moving away from Intel will have major impacts on the chassis design (since Apple chips use less energy and produce less heat), performance and battery life.

For the mini LED screen, blooming only shows in very specific situations and the blooming may be less noticeable since these larger screens will require more dimming zones. Blooming or not, these screens will still be a major upgrade and give us exra brightness, HDR capabilities and much better contrast

When it comes to OLED, I can’t see Apple making that switch that quick. Not to mention OLED has its own issues… If Apple really is planning to switch screen technology then it will probably happen after the mid generation refresh which probably won’t come until 2023.

Doesn't AS already include a form of ARMv9?
Apple’s chips use custom versions of ARMv8 which already incorporate many of the improvements which will be included in ARMv9. So yes, stock ARMv9 will come with some improvements but the gains will not be as obvious for Apple devices sense Apple has already gone far beyond what stock ARMv8 offers. Hopefully that makes sense and I’m sure someone else can explain that better.

So in other words, the M2 chips should see around a 15% improvement in single core performance and better efficiency but it won’t be anything groundbreaking sense Apple is already doing much of what ARMv9 will bring with their custom chip designs.

What's the chance that the new mabooks will come out with a new keyboard, something like an improved batterfly? Or maybe with two different keyboards to choose from? I am asking this because I love the butterfly keyboard so much...

VERY unlikely they will come out with butterfly keyboards. If butterfly keyboard is there on 2021 Macbooks Pros, that will stop a LOT of people from buying them.

I know I would, it can the best CPU, GPU, battery life, and screen and more ports but if it has ANY form of butterfly keyboard then its a NO go from me and I am sure I am not alone in this.

the new scissor keyboard feels amazing to me. Really don't miss the 2017 butterfly at all, especially it's reliability.

True about reliability (which can potentially be improved). However, this scissor one is way better than the previous scissor one, but they keys are smaller than the butterfly ones and you need to hit them closer to the center, while the butterfly ones can be hit even at the corners.

after some of the rumours didn't become reality in the california streaming-keynote, i'm curious how many stories surrounding the new mbpros will fall flat on their face (no touchbar, magsafe, hdmi & all the ports, smaller bezels).

The broken displays discussion goes into the next round.

It looks like we should buy the M2X with OLED and 90 or 120hz.

We will always want that which is rumored to have the next version/generation and we will never buy anything.
Yeah, it's the curse of having rumour sites. You can actually see more than 1 update ahead, because some rumours don't make it into the next machine. With as a consequence that we're all disappointed and decide to wait for the next generation. But then a rumour surfaces about the next thing after that... It's why I'm still typing this on my Mac SE with 40MB hard disk.

Yes, I'm still thinking about if Apple Lisa is the way to go :p

I'm waiting to ask new users if M1 is good enough to run/emulate some industrial Windows programs but nobody tested it. If M1 (or the M1X) is good enough I'll go to the new platform, else if, maybe I buy one of the last intel 🤷‍♂️

I am considering getting a Macbook pro M1 now, expecting the M1X to be available in the next few months.

I have the option to a 90 day return window, and I am unsure of how the M1 chips will handle my workflow. But I am really tempted.

That’s not my point.
I want to buy the best notebook.
Best means also best hardware.
If others have 90 and 120 hz and better display-> oled, then…
I don’t like to pay 7-8k for a…

Exactly one year after the M1X?
We don't really know at this point. MBA will be about 1.5 years more than likely. But that might be because it's getting a major redesign. At the moment Apple are transitioning so schedules are probably all wonky. Maybe there will be 14 & 16 MBPs in Oct/Nov next year, but who knows as we haven't even got this year's yet!

As Terminator pointed out, OLED has its own issues. Maybe OLED will be awesome. But screen tech always has issues. If you're concerned about MiniLED and blooming (fair enough) then perhaps it's best to wait for the reviews of real users. I doubt tech reviewers with loan machines from Apple will bring it up.

The faster refresh rate is definitely a positive though.

But you'll always be waiting. At the time of release the M1X will be the best. Until a certain amount of time passes and another machine is released and it will be better. Wait for geekbench scores for the MX1 and see what the single core scores are then compare to M1.

I personally don't care about those scores. I know the M1X will be awesome for my workflow.

All the talk about M2X is kinda early since we don’t know what the upgrade cycle will be. We are still very much in the beginning stages of this Apple silicon transition. As Smoking Monkey pointed out, the M1 MacBook Air is getting ready to pass its first birthday and it will probably be March or April before it gets an update (on a side note, I think it’s very impressive that even the base model M1 is still cutting edge for single core and multi core performance after almost a full year of being out… and that’s the “low end” Apple chip 😳).

After the 14” and 16”, we still have the higher end Mac Mini, the larger iMac and the Mac Pro which all need to transition. At this point we don’t know if Apple will carry the M1X into the larger iMac or if they will introduce an M2X right away (which I doubt since it’s taken this long to get the M1X).

My point is, it could certainly be possible that the 14” and 16” don’t see another update until early 2023… When it comes to OLED, all we know is Samsung is making 14” and 16” panels and they are supplying them to Asus. It’s assumed that Samsung is working with Apple as well but we honestly don’t know if or when Apple will move to OLED but I’d say it’s a fair bet that Apple will stick to mini LED for a while since they have already dumped countless hours and dollars into R&D.

Exactly mate. I am caring about my mbp 15" mid 2015 so much (it is still a beast imo). My plan is to wait until December 2022 and compare the newer 16" models and chase one on the used market. I am curious about the difference of the 2022mbp-M-Chip to the 2021mbp-M-Chip.

MY rule for apple devices always has been: When something "new" comes out wait at least for the 3rd gen product. (The 2022mbp would be kind of the third gen M-Chip based mbpb we would see...). But maybe I will also just go for the 20212mbp, if it supports multiple displays (at least four 4k monitors like the previous mpb) and all seems fine with it.

I am still on mac osx mojave with a 256gb ssd... :D Cant wait for an upgrade
