It has a 14" 120hz screen with an Nvidia 3050ti for $2099 so it might give the MacBook Pro 14" some competition for customers who aren't tied to the Apple ecosystem and who want to do some light gaming. However, the M1X will blow past it in CPU performance and on the 32 core model, the GPU performance should be close if not better depending on if Apple has improved the individual GPU cores compared to the M1. Battery life will also be miles ahead. The MacBook will also pull ahead in thermals and overall design as well... That large ugly vent area on the bottom of the Surface Laptop is the perfect visual representation the Intel thermal issues.

That being said, the angle ability of the screen along with the stylus will be pretty cool for people who do a lot of art.

But at this point it is obvious there’s going to be a new 16" mbp. If they pre-announce it or not, people (potential costumers) know that bc of (very least) the 2 yr transition period to as, Apple announced.
No, not really. We know because we follow Apple's every move like a stalker. But the general public (being the 99% of mac users who are not on this site - *shock*) would likely postpone a purchase if a pre-announcement was made now.

I will straight up be very disappointed if GPU capability of the new MPB doesn't easily exceed a mobile 3050ti.

Like, that's a pretty low hurdle it should clear.

i respectfully disagree.
imo people who purchased a 16" then and/or who want to upgrade now (aka the people who spend north of 2 thousand euros on a notebook) are mostly well informed about what they are buying, because it's not just another regular notebook for soccer-moms, pupils or college students.

I think you would be surprised at how uninformed people are and also how many people purchase tech that they don’t need or understand the capability of.

My mistake, I thought it was black but it's the graphite iPhone Pro that is black. Any dark MBP would be nice. I'd even welcome white, I'm just tired of silver.
I’d love an all black 16” mbp with a gorgeous bright mini-led.
Heck I’d even be happy with the iMac Pro space gray chassis.
Heck at this point, I’d be happy with any mbp 16” with AS 😂

dont think so, surface laptop studio has 120hz but weak dGpu for it...the new Mbp will have a resolutions 3024 x 1964 and 3456 x 2234 for the 16" with, i think even the 14" 16gpu cores better than their top dGpu 3050ti
I think the M1 is already better in compute power than both
  • Quad-core 11th Gen Intel® Core™ H35 i5-11300H
  • Quad-core 11th Gen Intel® Core™ H35 i7-11370H
So, they have that extra pad for an 3050ti , making the laptop almost as thick like an gaming laptop with dgpu3060 or higher dgpu. But again, i pre-ordered the base 512, i7 with geforce rtx, hoping it will arrive next month
But also cannot wait for these new Mbp with , finally 2x native resolutions , with different aspect ratio it is approximately 15.4:10, which is different from the 16:10 current MacBooks use.

I can understand but in my experience, I see many counterexamples. I do IT for a tv broadcaster and some of our freelancers but the 16" purely for the screen size. They swallow the high price because they want a mac and they want a big screen. Even if it had only the Intel gpu, they'd be just fine. Then there's others who insist on getting the maxed out ones 'for future proofing' but who still replace their machines every other year, but that's a different discussion 🤣

So what do we make of the expected resolution changes for the 14 & 16"

As discovered by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser, the two new display resolutions are listed as "3456 x 2234 Retina" and "3024 x 1964 Retina" and do not correspond to resolutions of the built-in displays on any current or previous Apple products. Based on the resolutions themselves and their relationships to each other, it seems likely that these new resolutions are for the upcoming MacBook Pro.

like i said above...that means, Apple after some time, they go again , 2xnative resolutions, and also the aspect ratio is changed to a more " surface like"

Like that they’re returning to integer scaling, hate having to lose that sharpness for the extra space 1680x1050 affords! I’m also a big fan of squarer aspects as I’m mostly doing office productivity type work. I hope they keep the width the same and make the display taller, rather than making it taller but narrower. That might mean a display size of 16.1-16.3” for the new model which would be great! All that with a mLED HDR panel will be a feast for the eyes!

Will the new revealed resolutions on the 14" and 16" have an effect on what kind of external monitors you can connect it with? I'm a novice on this stuff but I am preparing to buy the 16" m1x when it gets here but I also only have an old external monitor which is also due for an upgrade. I've read that only a select few external monitors can give as smooth and crisp a picture because of the retina scaling on macbooks. Will this expand the available monitors to replicate the displays on Macbooks or will it only make it even more difficult?

I know monitors can be a very subjective thing based on eyesight and personal preferences, but I've found that anything below a 4K screen ends up being noticeably lower resolution compared to the laptop screen. In recent times its also become a confusing mess with cable types and specs too.

So I'd guess the native resolution won't make this situation any better.

Only if you are going to use screen mirroring.

For “extended desktop” (or whatever it’s called in macOS) you can just use the native resolution of the monitor, whatever that may be. (Or scaled, if the resolution is high enough.)

Sounds like an experiment on how to make Apple richer :) with obvious results…
