Honestly I will be happy as long as I get it before christmas, it's a gift to my better half you might say. :)

Was getting a bit worried because of all the problems, but it seems that most of the iMacs are not effected. Hardware is hardware, some problems will always happen.

Placed my order on Oct 24 at an apple reseller store and still no word on when it will ship. There is much more to the story but is not important now. Completely fed up with the black hole of a wait. The store manager is not willing at all to go to bat for me or offering me anything extra for the wait. Apples service has been dismal to say the least, I guess because I ordered from a reseller. I am very close to cancelling my order and re ordering online. Just thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone can come up with a reason why I should not. it is very obvious to me that my current order will not get here until christmas and probably the upcoming flood of new online orders will bump mine into next year. What a joke simply buying a computer has become.

Well, Apple can't do much if you've ordered from a reseller, to say that their service has been dismal, is unfair.

If your reseller isn't prepared to do anything or give you any guarantees, I'd cancel. Personally, with the store saying 7-10 days, I would just cancel anyway and order direct.

My own order, placed with Apple store on the 8th of Nov, arrived with me on the 16th - Shanghai to UK in <3 days once it went preapred for shipment.

My advice, is cancel it, order your i5 or i7 and don't order any peripherals with it, I did have a RAM upgrade to 8GB, but not software or extra stuff like a printer. Don't risk some cazy 16GB upgrade or having software installed or a printer added to your order, delaying it because the process is longer or the printer/RAM isn't available (16 GB is likely to be rarer than 8GB imho).

Cheers

I agree with MooCow34. Cancel and order with Apple. I did the same exact thing two days ago. Didn't hear a thing from my reseller, ordered directly with Apple (on the phone) - ended up saving money and getting a delivery date 7-10.dec.

I think this is also due to all the positive press the quad core iMacs are getting that compare it to the Mac Pros like this one.

Here in Japan the estimated shipping is still listed as 5 to 7 days.

A benefit you guys in Japan have is the closer delivery route.

I bet the actual shipment takes 1-2 days vs. 4-6 days to Continental Europe (and a month to the UK, it seems!).

Plus, as I recall from my days of living in Japan, the delivery agencies are careful and reliable. Manufacturers got to be extra diligent with quality control for the Japanese market, as you lose or gain market share in a blink of an eye through word of mouth.

Frankly, I still don't quite understand what I'm doing back in Europe... the real life seems determined to keep me out of Japan for now.

My wait is over

Having originally ordered an i5 with a 2TB drive almost three weeks ago, I switched to an i7 when the benchmarks came out.

Yesterday, I was told by the UK reseller that the quads wouldn't go in to production until mid December. So, I cancelled the order and bought an i5 1TB froma different UK reseller who had them in stock. It is now in my car waiting for 5pm UK time for me to dash home and get going.

Nice!

For most people I think the i5 will be more than enough power. :)

why not order from the Apple Store. No sure why that reseller is telling you that the quad cores are not going to be in production till Mid Dec

Quality matters.

I'm starting to think this delay is due to halted production rather than demand delays. If Apple is furiously correcting design errors, I don't mind waiting.[/QUOTE}

I bet you hit the nail on the head. Possibly the reason why the October orders
got so delayed. The quality of its products has got to be hugely important to
Apple (I hope).

Mine just spent 3 days touring SHANGHAI CN and arrived early this morning in
ANCHORAGE, AK. I hope it took some nice photos, but I wish it would come home soon.

Nice.

Mine was released from Arnhem this morning and now it's on its way from Zurich to Geneva, at a veery leisurely pace. From experience, it may mean delivery tomorrow for me.

Just a final update, done my time machine restore and the thing is up and running. a few notes:

  1. The change the startup disk to your mac works to improve boot times, I swear it's not placebo, the apple logo took like 10 seconds to appear, and now it is within 3.

Enjoy your new iMac!

Can you explain this one about the boot not sure what it refers too.
Thanks!
My i7 rocks by the way!

Some i7's out of the box are very slow to start up (as was mine - it was taking ages). That's because by default, the start-up disk isn't assigned for some reason so it searches for it.

You can go to "Settings" / "Start-up Disk" and set it to Machintosh HD, then the start-up time improves dramatically.

My iMac is sitting at the FedEx building in Ontario, CA. It left Anchorage AK last night. It's scheduled to be delivered on Monday, Nov 30th. Thanksgiving kind of delayed things a little.

I ordered an i7 with lots of upgrades on Nov 17th. It was originally scheduled for delivered on December 4th. I received an email shortly after saying that everything had shipped and would be here earlier. Nice, I was thinking it would be delayed due to an impression that there were significant numbers of failures.

Not to downplay the failures that have been encountered, I would be devastated if my iMac arrives only to be sent back again right away. I am both excited and apprehensive at this stage.

However, the bump in shipping time makes me think that most are being delivered problem free, which is good. Though, to be great, delivering all of them in working condition would be required.

Because the reseller had a £100 rebate offer if you traded in an old machine. But the lure of actually possessing the machine outweighed my need for that £100 saving!

Machine is up and running; no hard disk noise, screen looks okay. Very fast. Have upgraded from a 20" Core Duo iMac.

Good luck to everyone waiting. I really hope you get your machines soon. They are worth the wait.

I bought my i7/4GB/1TB through an apple reseller on Oct 21 and got it on Nov 19 (around 4 pm). Do not despair, yours could be there tonight...

Like you, I was not able to get any info from the dealer at any time. Except when ... my iMac had actually arrived in the store. I think that the dealers can't get any more info from Apple about deliveries than any of us.
