What REALLY bugs me is people getting the iMacs delivered with the glass cracked - it takes literally 20 seconds to replace the glass on an iMac. Two suction cups to pull it off, and use those two suction cups to put the new one on. It's only held on with magnets! Apple should replace the glass in less than 20 seconds in the store.

Moral of story: Don't send the whole system back for replacement if just the glass is cracked. The glass is nothing to do with the LCD. It's just essentially a cover!

You're assuming that the stores carry the extra glass in their stock room. That's not an everyday part that they would normally have to replace.

Fair enough, but I'm willing to bet it's a lot quicker to get a replacement piece of glass than waiting 2-4 weeks for a new system that may or may not have other issues? I know which I'd prefer! :D

I completely agree with you. The problem with Apple is for some reason they don't carry the glass as a part, SO THEY SAY. I scratched the glass on my previous iMac 24" and I called to find out how much to get it replaced? They said, "We don't actually carry that part, we would have to have it made for you". That was back when the 24" iMac was first released. I'm sure their repair facility has easy access to them now.

But you're right, you can almost change out the glass with your eyes closed, it's so fast and easy. I would prefer for them to do that too if everything else was good on my computer. That being said, I'm expecting my "Delayed Shipment" email on Monday for my 27" i7. It will be worth the wait. :)

How's this for conspiracy theory (gentlemen, start your rumors):

<conspiracy>

Apple is delaying shipments so that when people finally do get their iMacs, they will put up with any flaws that happen to be there, because they don't want to have to wait another month and half to get a replacement...smart Apple very smart.

</conspiracy>

lolol. really! cmon now.

I would expect that by now it's a combination of issues slowing them down.

1. Extraordinary demand for a well-priced computer with a gorgeous screen. The 27" iMac is a great machine (when it works) both for consumers and for Apple, who can hock of their almost-last-gen USB 2.0 and DVD tech at a good price.

2. The more iMacs Apple has shipped, the more replacements it has then had to build. More demand, but not a good kind. This artificially increases demand.

3. Meeting reseller backorders. Apple doesn't make reseller orders a priority, but at some point it does have to meet them and will. Based on a little knowledge, I can say that after the holiday shopping season finishes is a likely time. Resellers don't really make money out of Apple hardware, and it can be a tough relationship. They won't get in-demand systems in time (particularly at Xmas) but they will get them.

4. Fixing the problem with the screens. The 27" screen is a new model and it is a high grade screen. Making them is a chemical-intensive process. If people are being told of parts shortages that will reflect that in the first instance LG is simply applying more aggressive quality control and holding back the defective parts. You'd expect numbers to pick up as LG identify and fix the quality problem.

I've got an i7 on order and I hope to see it in another 2 weeks. But who can say if that will be the case. The above would be really tough to manage from a logistics perspective. I have a brand new desk set up and waiting - expecting my 27" beastie will look a little grander on it than my MacBook Air :)

Delay

As expected.. DELAY!!!.
Order on 11 jan

Old schedule:
Ship : 25 jan
Deliver : 2 feb

New schedule:
Ship : 17 feb
Deliver : 25 feb

Bad apple.. Bad...!!
Is it possible more delay after 1st delay?

Wellllll...

Not only was mine not delayed (well, delayed by a day but probably not factoring in timezones) but, after shipping on the 19th, it's now in for delivery tomorrow (26th) rather than the original date of 2nd February. Hurrah! As far as I can tell, it's now with UPS in the UK and I have a tracking number :D

I got the delay email but with no new date. My order status is still ship 20th delivery 28th. Rang them and said that the delay wont affect me and that my iMac 27" i7 will be out for shipping today and will reach me for the 28th. My order status still hasnt changed but they said i should get an email with tracking number shortly. Roll on Thurday

Nice to hear some good news about the UK supply!

Checked my order status and it says not yet shipped. I check apple US and the order status is perpared for shipment. Why the difference?
How long does it usually stay 'prepared' for?

It always used to be that the US store had an extra step in the order status between not shipped and shipped compared to the UK store for some reason. My order still says not shipped on the US store.

Damn, mine was suppose to be here the 26th too. Now I got to wait till the 19th of Feb.

Strange, in my case is the exact opposite, in the portuguese apple store it shows:

"order status prepared for shipment"

in the US apple store it shows:

"Not yet shipped"

Originally, my i5 was to be delivered by Jan 14. Today is the promised seventh business day after receiving my shipment delay e-mail. If last Monday's Martin Luther King Jr Holiday is a day off for Apple, like many here in Atlanta, then tomorrow would be seven days. Anyway, there is no change on Apples order status page -- it still says "not yet shipped."

This is a replacement order and I've now been without a computer for a total of 27 days. Oh well, if the iMac issues are sorted it will be worth the wait.

Oh yeah of course it's going to be worth the wait ;)
They probably asked their production company to re-check the quality because of the problems with the first batch.

I'm more than willing to wait 3 weeks for a i7 in perfect condition; At 2000$ it's already a steal - I would have paid almost that only for the monitor.

I just ordered my i7. Ships in 3 weeks (should be here the 19th, supposedly). I can't wait!!

I had originally purchased an i5 locally at one of our Apple stores. I thought it was "fine" and I was "lucky" until I did the yellow screen test today. Needless to say I couldn't justify spending 2k on a faulty screen. So I took it back tonight, exchanged for another i5 at the other Apple store. I quickly came home and before setting anything up I plugged it in, only to find out this one was actually WORSE than my first one. The first one had the tinge on the bottom and bottom right. This one had the tinge nearly 2/3s of the screen. I packed it up (yet again), took it back to nearest Apple store (15 min) and told them about the issue, when the manager took out a third and opened it right in front of me so I could check it out before taking it home.

In the end, all 3 had the yellow tinge and I'm using my MBP for another 3 weeks as my "main" computer. The i7 was meant to be. :)

This makes me shake my head. You were fine with your first one until you looked at some stupid *test* page? What IS the world coming to?

If I didn't work with photography then I wouldn't mind the yellow THAT much. But I do, it throws off the color balance big time. Keep in mind I only spent about 5 hours working with the first one, I didn't have much time for it to give me any problems, which it would have when the time came.

I have been told mine is coming tomorrow as well (wed the 27th), but I don't believe it. If it is true I can pick it up on Sat or sunday,,, yellow screen and all:eek:

Delay, delay, delay...

We recently contacted you regarding your Order for the iMac 27’ explaining that we had to revise
the shipment date of your order by 7 days.

We sincerely apologise, but at this time we must extend your expected shipment date further.

We now expect to ship your Order within 2 weeks.

Getting sick of this now.

Order Date: Dec 30, 2009

Original shipping date: 14 Jan, 2010
Original delivery date: 25 Jan, 2010

Then delayed by 7 business days:

Revised shipping date: 26 Jan, 2010
Revised delivery date: 08 Feb, 2010

Then delayed yet AGAIN:

Revised shipping date: 15 Feb, 2010
Revised delivery date: 24 Feb, 2010

I'm based in the UK and haven't even recieved my original order yet, let alone a replacement, while others who ordered after me have recieved their original order AND some have even recieved replacements since (including some other people in the UK) - WTF!

So, even if it does arrive on 24th Feb (which I doubt), that's what... 56 days of pure tortuous waiting! Sure, I don't mind waiting if i'll end up with a fault-less machine, but Apple could at least provide me with realistic estimated shipping/delivery dates instead of keeping my hopes up and then delaying at the very last minute.

I read that some people complained of the previous delays to customer support and were given free Apple Care or an upgrade of some sort. I've pretty much maxed-out the iMac spec-wise, have already bought Apple Care and the delivery was FREE, does anyone recon I would get anything if I complain because I'm doubtful?

Then delayed yetAGAIN:

Revised shipping date: 15 Feb, 2010

Seeing this, it seems very unlikely that my iMac which is supposed to be shipped to the UK on the 1st Feb will go on time. Bugger.

Original Shipping date of Jan. 25. Of course it hasn't shipped yet. If this ends up coming to weeks I'll cancel and go back to PC.
