Cook also said "the current iMac is the best desktop Apple's ever made and its 5K display is the best desktop display in the world. "

I think we can safely calm our collective tits. In no shape or form is a nMP or cMP or Mini is coming. It is a new iMac.

Also desktop Kabylake and newer AMD GPUs are all ready, and USB-C infection will eventually creep into the consumer desktop line anyway of course it is now. The only question is if it will have some emoji bar enabled keyboard.

He was talking about desktop macs...so not just imac !
"we have great desktops in our roadmap" so more than 1 category !

are those AMD cpu a lot better than kaby lake ? lets not forget that mac mini and 4k imac rely on the iGPU so it must be strong

on mac pro probably we get skylake xeon...but i dont think apple will go with both intel and amd cpu...So if for mac mini and imac will bring Intel cpu, i bet on mac pro will do so also

Depends on core clocks, and TDP for the CPUs. I think we have to stop thinking "in old terms" about Apple computers, and what they previously used to have. If Apple decides to ditch Intel, we are getting everything from scratch. But build up around key principles.

For example, Mac Mini, and 21 inch iMac can have low power APUs(21 inch iMac can have up to 95W APU, with 4.0 GHz CPU and 1.5 GHz Vega GPU, and HBM2 shared between them). 27 inch can have 8 core CPUs with refreshed Polaris, or Polaris 12 GPU.

Mac Pro can have the server Summit Ridge CPUs: 16 core/32 Thread, at the lowest end.

The problem for all this is simple. Timeframe of releases. Serwer and HEDT is slated for up to Q2 release. APUs: 2H 2017.

Looks like Apple is gonna delay macs thanks to the latest article about engineers leaving or be placed to work on mbp.

Don't get too excited, I am sure they have many iMacs planned. The words desktops likely means iMac variations.

A 2017 mini or pro is a pipe dream.
DESKTOPS mac...so more than imacs...im sure, if you want we can bet that next year we will get update for imac and at least 1 other desktop mac

Of course... of course... we will stay tuned... after a thousand days and we are still here waiting.
I hope there will be something better than the tremendous latest "Hello again" event...
And I really hope that we will have options again...
(Is there any chance that these delays are related to the construction of their new Campus?)

Apple could easily do two events, a Spring one and WWDC like the last two years.

WWDC has to cover 4 Operating Systems at this point ( macOS , iOS , watchOS , and tvOS ). It was very light on completely systems ( software + hardware) in 2015 and even lighter in 2016. Looking for hardware at WWDC is a "broken analog clock" prediction. You can roll it out every year and once in a while it will be correct, but that is more coincidence that insight.

LG 27" Ultrafine displays announced by can't buy. Air Pods announced by can't buy. etc. These are are quirks driven by almost "fixed in time" events that Apple has to fix the device into, not announce when actually ready. The "Spring" stuff is not particularly fixed in stone line WWDC ( June) and September (iPhone ) October ( Mac and other stuff). The first is driven by need to have an educational developers conference every year. The primary reason for that is not not hardware and education is needed yearly. (if not more often). The "Fall" two events are driven by fixed in time holiday buying seasons.

Intel launched Xeon E5 1600 v4 in June 2016 and some roadmaps show v5 coming in Q2 '17. Given Intel's 'quarter or more' late track record I suspect it is Q3 '17 earliest for actually volume shipments. If there was anything at WWDC it would be likely be another "look but you can't buy" preview.

Q1-Q2 more likely iMac and Mac mini updates.

If Apple intends to disappear down the rabbit hole for another 3-4 years on the Mac Pro then they very well be waiting on the equivalent of the E5 1600 v5 ( socket is going to change so that x6xx designation would probably change too. Still would have a leading one, 1xxxx ). If they can't get a E5 v4 out in Q1 or relatively very early Q2 then kicking the the can into the second half of 2017 makes sense even if if going to piss more than a few off. Even more so if don't intend to do any new work for several years. Waiting for v5 gives them the option of going anal with the USB sockets and going all Type-C thunderbolt (with 6 sockets only ) [ Yeah socket count down but it is all OCD consistent with every port the same. No mixing and matching with Type-A even though they'd be highly useful and effective. ]

I genuinely think a Mac Pro update is unlikely at this point.

I think Apple's roadmap most likely includes discontinuing it and instead pushing MacBook Pros as their pro machine.

When Tim cook tells his employees not to worry because there's new desktop Macs in the roadmap that tells me the employees don't know anything about new desktops.

Think about THAT.
Exactly-if they're concerned that should really be the writing on the wall.

I'm not a paid Apple-doomed shill, but this report really vindicates the concerns many in this thread have been sharing. Of course the iOS zombies and Mac newbies are all preaching Apple has never been better, with their emojis and watch bands, oh and don't forget their rose gold macs.

...and the DongleBook Pro a true PowerEmoji workhorse.:)

What is Tim actually reacting to? What news? Has any major tech blog or podcaster said that the iMac wouldn't get refreshed with TB3 & Kaby Lake? The iMac is great, but it's thermally constrained, more than the Mac Pro at least.

Seems like a MBP, or Mac Pro don't have slow steady progress, but are turned to in sequence, to update. The only desktop getting the yearly update and incremental updates seems to be the iMac.

Seeing as the iMac will get an update before any Mac Pro one, if the Mac Pro's dead, maybe they'd use the iMac refresh. But then why make the iMac a minor spec bump if they're killing off Mac Pro(not that the iMac can replace the Mac Pro).

There has been a lot of news stories on the Mac Pro being ignored. That's exactly what he's reacting to. He's not reacting to the iMac or iMac stories that don't exist because that's not what he's talking about.

The only reason he mentioned the iMac is because it's the only modern Mac desktop they are shipping right now.

Several big bloggers in the last few weeks have written about the Mac Pro. Those are the stories he's talking about.

How do you reconcile the fact that even Apple's own employees don't know much about future Mac development?

That " roadmap " comment gives me the heebie-jeebies. Roadmap ?!!! Shouldn't it be already production ready by now ?

On the flip side this could be a well placed PR stunt.
