I agree that while Apple slimming down its product line to focus is good, from the outside the display business seems like a relative "freebie"—they have to bake the displays into their computers anyhow, and you can sit back for five years and not update the product and it's not a big deal.

8-10 cores seems to be the sweet spot for Adobe Premiere Pro CC

Personally I'm thinking personally about After Effects CC, which had a terrible multiprocessor renderer for years (will it render frames simultaneously? Roll for initiative!) they ended up simply removing it in CC2015... and here we are years later and they still haven't added it back in or the equivalent.

They could leave the TBD as it is, it looks superb as it is.
Just replace the panel with a 5K 10b HDR DCI-P3, make it TB3, loose the MagSafe cable (only since it's not used anymore in the new models), update the FaceTime HD camera to 1080p and you're good to go.
FireWire can also go now and USB 3 instead of USB 2, leave GbE.
See, was it that hard? :)

And for all practical purposes (majority of functions), performance in Photoshop and Lightroom maximizes at 6 cores and no real advantage after 8. That's why I only got 6 in my computer now since my main use is Adobe software.

I think that there might be a chance and Apple is just taking a short break from displays business, so when they have a matured transition to the new standards, for all of their offerings, then they will present again a unique display + docking capabilities with tb3 usb-c connection.

Yes true, premiere rendering profits of all the cores, but that's about it. What about after Effects? Since two years it lacks a multiprocessing engine!!!

Yeah, that's really odd.
You'd think AE would be a big beneficiary of multi-core support.

Well, there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon after Tim Cook was quoted as saying there were desktops due in 2017.

Of course that's typical Apple-style non-specific language, but what else did we expect, right? :)

iMac's a given, so we're looking at the Mac Pro, and the Mac mini. By all accounts, because of battery issues with the MacBook Pro, engineers were taken from other projects to help, so that may have hampered things a bit for the desktop lineup.

The Mac mini is due a form factor change, and with all the advances in the last couple of years, this could be a really exciting project.

The Mac Pro though is a tricky one. As with the G4 cube, could Apple turn on their heels and decide it was a mistake? Would they try and re-engineer the SFF design? Or cancel it altogether.. could be any of these really.

I would love a proper tower again, bit I think it's a foregone conclusion Apple is moving into condensed, non-user serviceable devices.

I'd love to see a design that had CPUs and GPUs both as daughterboards, (the older Mac Pros shows this can be done).

Of course that would affect the number of TB ports on the back, but since Apple already do this with their new MacBook Pro models, it wouldn't be a massive leap.

Would be good, as people could potentially have combinations based around;
  • 1 CPU 1 GPU
  • 2 CPUs 1 GPU
  • 1 CPU 2 GPUs
Not everyone needs 2 'FirePro' GPUs in their workstations, and since Sierra still lacks Crossfire support, some of the reasoning behind having 2 isn't there to begin with. This would help with power consumption and thermals.

1 CPU 1 GPU would probably seen as cutting into iMac/Mac mini margins, but 2 CPUs as standard would be cool (they did this before too).
If Apple is planning to go back to previous model of mbp, then why not with Mac Pro?

Instead of being cagey I'll tell you what I heard: The UltraFine 5k IS actually the 5k Apple Thunderbolt Display, but Apple decided they didn't want to sell it, so they handed it over to LG. It's also why the 5k and 4k are different, why the 5k is far more similar to the Thunderbolt display in features, and why the 5k is Thunderbolt and the 4k is not. Apple engineered it, decided not to sell it, handed it over to LG who supplies their panels, and LG threw a case on it.

All the reasons I've heard Apple did this are stupid. So don't ask me why they thought this was a good idea.

filmak, I also was hoping that was the case but I don't know if they will ever go back to it again.

Doesn't really make sense that they have all TB3 gear, including the nMP, and have no external display and docking station.

pat, why would they go back to the previous MBP? Don't think they will.
[doublepost=1484086424][/doublepost]goMac, maybe that's true but why did they drop it? If the work was done already, why hand it over to a company that doesn't have the same design language? Just because they make the panels?
Are we even sure it's TB and not USB-C Alt Mode? TB3 would require 2 DP1.2 channels, not a standard cable, which I'm not sure it's needed for this display.

Really?! Haven't heard that before.
Not sure what going back means really.
Skip TouchBar? No DCI-P3 display? Old keys? TB2 instead of TB3? Guess not.
Only thing I can think of is using the same type of batteries which could/would make the laptop thicker.
And going back to a removable SSD.
The rest seems ok.

They were talking about mbp due to design problem like battery. If they were to revert back to previous with ports then hell...why can't they do the same? People would be more receptive to it.

They said they were thinking of reverting back to it...and why not? If Mac Pro is to revert back to older design then that would be great.
Absolutely! And I have a lot more respect for people that can recognize and admit when they made a mistake, then for those who stay the course no matter what. Going back to the old Mac Pro form factor would be most welcome!

goMac, maybe that's true but why did they drop [Thunderbolt 3 Display] it?

Because Apple under Tim Cook is not interested in selling fashion computing devices that do not have a built-in screen. i.e Only :apple: watch, iPhone, iPad, iPad Pro, MacBook, MacBook Pro, and (i)Mac and (i)Mac Pro will see updates.

I love this thread!

Whenever I feel down, whenever I feel there's no hope left in the world, I come here and bask in the warmth of the unreasoning, unsubstantiated, and never-ending optimism of those who think a new Mac Pro is coming.

I love you guys!
Neh...it's a symptom of being despair.

Sign of times, really. People are leaving Apple to work in most influential and most innovative company in the last years.

I feel like that estimation is a few years premature. Time will tell, but it doesn't seem like Tesla is changing or influencing anyone that heavily. At best, they seem to be trying to set up the turf around where they think the automotive puck is skating, but it's a long game at present.
