Meanwhile...

Lenovo announces its Thinkpad P71 Mobile workstation, will be available with Mobile Xeon E3v6, ECC DDR4 Ram and nVidia Quadro P5000 (pascal-5Tflop), with 4x faster storage (std m.2 NVMe user upgradable) than MP Late2013, and 2x faster GPU (5 Tflop fp32) than both nMP's D700 combined.

But we must be happy since our Macbook 'pro' corageous ditched USB3, and comes with soldered SSD...

Somebody should be Fired at Apple about this.

I wonder if these Gold Xeons will be BDL still?
If they are SKL-W it would be a nice fit for the nMP.
But it might come with a premium...
Sorry, it seems they are SKL-EP. Hope this a typo and are in fact -W.
6150 is a bit off. Will 6xxx be v6 series and so on?
Will Intel change the naming scheme? Feels right but I'm curious as to how they'll differentiate Basin Falls from Purley SKUs. And in Purley, how it will be for 2S, 4S and 8S.

The naming seems odd for a -X part, too similar to the desktop ones. Different socket and PCH with such a similar name? Not saying it isn't but sounds funny.
Good find though.

That's Applespeak for "we need help making better graphics".

I don't think so. This is about a standard for browsers to get the same kind of 3D experience when browsing with different devices. In other words, standardizing how browsers can access the GPUs of different devices so that the 3D & other effects of websites work smoothly across devices. I'm not sure why this was posted in this thread.

I'm so sorry.

This is last year news of intel with Xeon E5
Take this with a grain of salt....maybe they are working on it...who knows. I don't want to bring false hope.

I don't know what you mean by this. The v4's are already inside Dell Precision and HP Z workstations. The 2699(and his sibling, 2696 v4) are already benchmarked. Heck, you can even get them over ebay:

Two of this babies will give you a rendering score of 5400-5600 in Cinebench. Compare with 1200 best score a 12 core macpro can achieve. I can not believe that there are still mac users than think Apple will have something for them. Move on folks, Apple is no longer interested in computers. If your job depends on computers, Apple is not the place for you to be right now. I moved to Dell two years ago after 20 years of Apple, and i am at a few weeks distance from getting a new Dell T7910. I don't like Windows, but at least i can have up to date hardware for my business. I try to move everything on Linux for my new workstation, but will see how it goes. On my current Dell i have Windows, but will see how it goes with CentOS(my main concern are Quadro drivers).

There are people who use programs that are exclusive to OS X. So no...some people can't move on due to that. So rather than telling others to move on, you should worry about yourself.

What is in todays, multiplatform world MacOS Exclusive? Final Cut Pro? Logic Pro? Most applications are developed for Windows in the first place, and THEN ported to other platforms.

I commented on your post 'hoping' to see v4 Xeons on market when they are actually on the market. As for me I already did worried about myself and moved forward, 2 years ago, so i think i can give an advice based on my experience after 20 years of Apple. On the other hand, can you name 1 program that is exclusive to OS X with no alternative to Windows?

As kayoot noted: fcpx and Logic Pro.

Xcode
OmniFocus
OmniOutliner

Not to mention, a real Unix system instead of cygwin. Cygwin is OK, but there are just enough little windows-specific things to keep you aware that you are working with Windows and not a native Unix.

To be fair, there are, of course, alternatives to FCPX and LPX on Windows. I guess it's all about workflow and the way we feel about the environment (i.e the OS). When you spend years learning and perfecting how you use a particular software and your living depends on it, you don't always have the luxury, nor the will, to switch to another platform just because of Apple's "laid-back" approach to desktop computers ;). I've spent too many years and money with Apple, I like their eco-system, I love OS X, I want a new Mac Pro in 2017, and I'm staying with Apple. So there! ...Maybe I should continue this in your other thread though! :)

It makes sense that the iPhone could get wireless charging. Its interesting that macs could work as charging base stations. It makes sense, as long as the technology is not too bulky. It would enable a touchbar based keyboard for the iMac, since the keyboard would have higher power draw. Hopefully it means we get some cool stuff for the mac this year.

You can get a full ubuntu stack on windows 10 now...

Yeah, but it's the same problem, just by another supplier. Ubuntu creates a /mnt/c/Users/your-windows-user where your existing windows stuff is and a /home/your-ubuntu-user where your ubuntu stuff is. It's like to separate worlds.

E.g. the default PATH in cmd.exe is different from PATH in bash. If I have installed an Oracle-Client which places its PATH into systemwide %PATH% of windows, the Ubuntu subsystem has it's own $PATH which has no knowledge of the Windows system wide %PATH%.

That's what I'm talking about when I say "little windows-specific things" which are simply different from a real Unix. It's like being constantly reminded: Hey, now you are on the Windows side and we handle things like this ... and a second later it's like: Hey, now you are on the Linux side and we handle things like this.

For me, when I would be forced to use Windows only, I'd rather use something like PowerShell. I'd have to ignore the features I miss from the Unix world and be happy about some Windows features which are missing under Unix.
But trying to make Windows like a Mac (or a Mac like Windows) is a stupid idea which ultimately only makes you sad. Trust me, I've been down this road. Windows isn't bad, macOS isn't bad, but making one to be exactly like the other will only remind you of what does not work. It's focusing on all the problems without a chance to fix them. Who want's to be in such a situation?

So, if you prefer Windows, fine. Have fun.
I prefer macOS and I'm fine. Just don't tell me that different things are the same. Because they are not.
