None of us guessed it at the time the iPhone was first unveiled that it would be the cause of the death & destruction of the mac.

Nope, its not related to a server, but it can be used this way.

Think about possibility, that somebody offers an external GPU, and Apple is going to give "made for XXX" branding on it. They can make a external case to put it into, and the connect to Apple device. Regardless if it is MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini. On all of them there will be perfect scalability with the hardware that is inside the computer. iPad in this form can be a monitor/display, that connects wirelessly to it.

It is just an example. Zero guarantee that this is the reality you will see, but the "vectors" are laid down.

There is also no time span for showcasing this. Everything depends on how will macOS 10.13 look like, and what features it will have. In general, Apple will give this year something for professionals.

It may be just a placeholder just like Mac Pro 6.1 was.

Damn! Looks like I'll have to buy The White Album again.

Even if that long stretch of a prediction were true to a degree, I personally find it hilarious to view Apple as some technology frontier where "vectors" are already laid down for some invisible "breakthrough". It is a consumer product maker that also happens to be publicly shared, it's not NASA. Even taking into account of the forced secrecy they still ought to follow some roadmap to move on. Just look at Tesla / Space X.

Open mind, Open mind..
The only way that term makes sense if Apple were to free up the rest of the non - core computing peripherals and get partners on board who will manufacture such devices for Apple - LG display, input devices ( keyboards/mice ), network systems, hard disk enclosures, etc ( and add seamless exchange with IOS devices.. whatever that means )
But wasn't it happening anyway? So what would change?
OK... Tim talked about the most IOs, more powerful, etc. and mentioned the iMac. Connecting a rats nest of wired peripherals is the norm at Apple. What's new?
The only thing they can add to the mix are external GPUs. With Nvidia out of the loop only one vendor in town who can supply - AMD. Again .. how is that - open?
and then he bails out by saying I 'need'a windows system.. that cracked me up.

If they'd ever decide to bring eGPUs to the Mac, they'd have no excuse to exclude nVidia without making a fool out of themselves (assuming that the external interface would not be another proprietary and underpowered nonsense).

Worried about the 1080 Ti. Vega is still behind and not out yet, and Nvidia is lapping them now. Sure to cause angst here and at Apple.

The worst possibility for the Mac Pro is Apple deciding they can't compete and just dropping out of the market. AMD running behind with Vega isn't helping...

It's an insane time to be using GPU accelerated software. An 8-core Ryzen and two 1080s in a system is a steal at these prices, especially if one is using iRay or Corona, which will use your CPU and GPU.

Tell me about it. Hardware wise, the tech is exploding with possibilities. And it sucks to be a DCC artist on a Mac platform now.

To be crass, they only have to keep selling the exact same hardware for another six years or so to avoid such a law suit...
True, but Mago's comment started with "If apple considers to discontinue the Mac Pro" - which is something different.

Continuing the MP6,1 for another 7 years is a different set of goalposts from discontinuing it.

There's also the issue that the CPUs, GPUs and other components in the MP6,1 are nearing end-of-life, so Apple would need to stock up with enough inventory for six years.

Most if not all of you should just give up on the hopes of getting a new Mac Pro and just build yourselves a Hackintosh. Apple keeps stringing all of you along and for some reason, you all tolerate it.

I understand your sentiment; I'm not convinced this is the best path for businesses. At work we're already migrating machines away from the Apple platform. Our workstations are PC's now, as iPhones go off warranty we're getting Androids, then office computers will complete the migration by the end of this summer.

We didn't leave Apple, the opinion here is that Apple abandoned us.

I'm curious to see if macOS 10.13 will stop support for mac pro 5, 1. I still love my mac pro but apple is really forcing my hand...
