macOS 10.12 > Security and Privacy, the Allow Apps Downloaded From there's no more anywhere option.

I don't like this. macOS is closing little by little like its siblings?

Eh? Unix is case sensitive.

" ...n Unix filesystems, filenames are usually case-sensitive ... "
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Case_sensitivity

That is what APFS currently is. The problem is that there are apps that are case insensitive ( in part because Windows FAT and Mac ) bought into that.

See what Apple thinks, should your boot drive be case-sensitive or insensitive! And now you do the research and stop attacking every time I write something! Google even, please!

By default, Apple doesn't deliver ANY MAC with case-sensitive file system. And for a good reason, because your system will become unstable and apps stop working. So, this is built in feature, that OS X is not UNIX compatible by default.

Here's what Linus Torvalds thinks of HFS+:

Linus Torvalds: Apple's HFS+ is probably the worst file system ever

" There is a case sensitive option, but Apple actively hides it and doesn’t support it."

i don't think they've removed the ability to context click an unsigned application and open it from there
?

if not, the removing of 'anywhere' option is ok in my opinion.

it's easier to open unsigned apps this way (if you don't have anywhere pref selected) than by opening it through system preferences.. also, it prevents what i imagine was happening.. devs telling people how to disable gatekeeper in order for people to use their software then the users inadvertently leaving gatekeeper off after that.. which leaves many macs vulnerable to malware etc unbeknownst to most users.

---
idk, i guess my point is that i don't (currently) see this as a scenario of apple closing the OS as a power/control move.. more of a user security move.

....Well well well... If it's any consolation, at least according to Apple, the Mac Pro is still part of their landscape. :)

also...no mention of APFS yesterday during the keynote? (I was at work at times I had to mute sound :D...) I don't know but it seems like a huge change worth mentioning. Or maybe Swift Playgrounds was more important for the audience...

The D700 is a rebranded 79xx. It doesn't have ECC. And beside being good at mining bitcoins, they were still getting beaten by NVidia in everything else.
Apart from Final Cut Pro X and OpenCL performance.

Finally, positive news on MP.

I'm still planning on using the new Breathe app on my AW, just in case.

Which is quite marginal in actual use... And if you want to put forth those AMD optimized application I could just as well counter them with any CUDA or Gameworks optimized applications...

Lol...is that it?!? Is that your reality?!? I was expecting some big revelation, and that never happened.

Dur...I've already said the D700's are rebranded as well as Nvidia's Quattro's AND some of their GeForce cards.

Anandtech on macOS Sierra.

Interesting bit is about the Metal:
Anandtech said:
Notably, Apple calls Metal’s tessellation feature a “flexible compute-based approach” which is a bit confusing since it can be construed multiple ways. However Apple’s documentation confirms that this is a traditional tessellation pipeline, using a combination of a fixed function tessellator and compute-based hull/domain/vertex shading. Though outside the scope of this article, tessellation is also being brought to the latest generation iOS devices under iOS 10, so developers should be able to hit the ground running with tessellation.
So yeah, this is Shader Model 5.0 AT LEAST. But because there is Shading Language based on Clang and LLVM we know that we are looking at HLSL, so this is Shader Model 6.0.

I may have to correct some things from my previous posts on the matter of Metal.
Resource Heaps is only on iOS/WatchOS/tvOS version of Metal. There is no Resource Heaps in macOS Metal, but there are few other features that are directly taken out from D3D12.

OpenCL is not AMD optimized application. Nor is Final Cut Pro. FCPX is optimized for OpenCL, and Apple picks hardware that is best for OpenCL. Simple as it can be.
In fact both are in a sense. And in 2016 OpenCL and FCPX are just not relevant anymore if they ever were. Both are dying a slow death.

You originally said they were w9000 which they weren't. But keep digging.

Ah yes Anandtech, the site that takes money from hardware maker to do "reviews"... Yeah...

If you can counter it with facts, do it. Because with this type of post you crossed the boarder of ridiculousness. And after all, Anandtech still has much more credibility than you do.

Every review site depends on their advertisers and on early hardware under NDA if they want to play in the big league (like Anandtech does). So it's save to assume that they are not completely impartial in their reviews. That's OK as long as you just want some early basic facts about some new hardware.

But as long as I can remember, any critical issues and bugs with new hardware ... the kinds if bugs you notice after some weeks of real unguided usage ... are rarely originating form the big review sites.

What's Apple waiting for? It sounds like the needed 3rd party hardware is now available. Why are they continuing to sell the 2 1/2 year old 2013 model as their pro offering. I would imagine it's sales are on the slow side.

Maybe Apple is testing the AMD Zen CPU as a possible alternative to Intel's Xeon.

THERE WAS NO REVIEW! It was compilation of facts about Metal v2. Look what Tuxon replied to the post and the context of it.

You get the ridiculousness of his response?

Oh, you call this a compilation of facts ... OK. I would call this a tidbit of basic information.

Really, just read from the source at developer.apple.com or wait for the ADC videos about "What's new in metal part1/part2". And even after this, some real world experience does not hurt in order to come to a reasonable conclusion what Metal on macOS will offer on iGPUs and discrete GPUs.

I don't think it's ridiculous to state one's opinion about the quality of some news sites. As with all news outlets—whether it's tech, politics, religion or whatever you are into—they are never free of their own agenda. Even the links within my reply.

Tim and his friends meant nMP 2013 and those remaining survivors.

They probably referring to nMP 2013....that will last a decade.

Because Phil said its the Mac Pro for 10 years.

Load Power draw around 100W. Too bad it is so low on compute power. However it has another side. 100W load power draw means that GPU has 58 GFLOPs/Watt which makes it the most efficient GPU in the world.

Previous crown was given to GTX 1080 - 45GFLOPs/Watt.

P.S. So they pretty much delivered the 2.8 times in power efficiency compared to previous generation of GPUs. So the rumor that Vega 10 might have 90 GFLOPs/watt might be completely true...

Polaris GPUs support officially now DP1.4. So, HDR for 5k is possible or 8k60p. Let's see if Apple has any use for those modes. At least there's no need to do a standard 4k display to achieve HDR what was DP 1.3 limit.

On gaming side there is a situation, that only few needs a better card than Radeon 480, it runs nearly all games maxed out on 1080p60. It runs most games 1440p60. If you're not playing 4k games, there's not much benefit by having anything else but the $199 class card. I heard Nvidia already has dropped 970 and 980 card prices for manufacturers. So this sub $200 level has become THE best gaming card market. Only at Pro level, those who needs TFLOPs, or the 4k gamers, are looking for something better.

When the VR takes of, things change and Radeon 480 level is the minimum and GTX1070/1080/Vega start to look more interesting.

Next PS4 is going to have Polaris 10 variant too. Sony has already mentioned that they're going to enter 4k & VR gaming with it... maybe 4k is possible with Vulkan & other Mantle variants. Like Metal.
[doublepost=1465987205][/doublepost]Polaris 11 is 2 TFLOP/s chip... Macbook Pro could double the computing power then. M370 does a bit under 1 TFLOP/s.

But, there's a 35W mobile version of Polaris 11 coming, so Apple could be after that with their light and thin obsession. Even then it will beat M370 pretty clearly. Intel's' Skylake mobile CPUs have cTDP of 35W too. That could give Apple 20W more thermal room to make next Pro laptops thinner. Even with dGPU.

There is a rumor that Asus readies 1622 MHz, 7.4 TFLOPs RX 480, with around 200W TDP. 1400 MHz RX 480 is on the level of GTX 1070.

So overclocking Polaris takes its efficiency advantage. With 200W it would be better to put two chips instead, and top GTX1080. Of course then it's twice as expensive as one Polaris 10 too... anyway, Polaris is not meant to compete with GTX1070 directly. Maybe full 40cu version with GDDR5/X.

Radeon 470 $149 and 480 $199 prices are insanely low. Perf/dollar has a new era. You get four 480's with the price of GTX1080 FE. And theoretical power 22 TFLOP/s.
