Oh, yeah. Forgot about that for a moment. The TB3 connector is not compatible with TB/TB.

I have multiple TB2 RAID, single drives and devices, so multiple adapters are going to be needed?
Actually that doesn't make any sense. According to the Thunderbolt site TB3 is backwards compatible with TB/TB2. It just uses the USB-3 connector. So wouldn't a TB2 to TB3 cable suffice?

This just gets better by the minute... Now I need hundreds of dollars worth of adapters to plug my gear into a new machine. Oh, wait. There is no new machine to plug anything into, so never mind.
Fwiw, speculating your post to not be 100% sarcasm. You would probably be able to use minimal adapters (kanex adapter is $99) and daisy chain devices.

There will possibly be other docking solutions but either way it'll probably be a pain.
[doublepost=1471450891][/doublepost]The adapter just changes the connector. I haven't seen any cables from TB1/2 (mini display port type) to TB3 (USB c type).

Mago, I may sound picky but I admit I love Apple's designs and Asus not that much. The detail I mentioned in the back of the 5K Asus monitor you mentioned, to me makes all the difference. You don't see that on an Apple device. It's all in the details, picky I know. Still, no one beats that.
The new TB3D should be DCI P3 though, so maybe not the same panel as the iMac but very close I'm sure.

Maybe Apple will bundle an adapter for TB2->TB3. O not :) They'll sell one for sure, with the usual price tag.

Engineer: I made a very nice looking case with a perfect mix of bold, yet understated, styling.
Marketing: OK, now tilt it 45 degrees.

Engineer: What?
Marketing: Tilt it 45 degrees. So it rests on the edge.

Engineer: But it will be unstable.
Marketing: Well put some feet on it of course.

Engineer: It will still be less stable, and it will actually take up a larger footprint on your desk.
Marketing: Yeah, but it's way edgier this way. Because it's resting on its edge. Edgier...edge...get it? Everyone is going to love this.

Apple said it though.. not some savvy analyst.

June 23, 2016
"We're discontinuing the Apple Thunderbolt Display. It will be available through Apple.com, Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last. There are a number of great third-party options available for Mac users," said an Apple spokesperson.

.......

do you think apple would make this sort of announcement to several news sites only to turn around and release another t-bolt display?
I'm not even sure if apple needs to keep selling displays anymore.

The Apple 30" Cinema HD Display was introduced 12 years ago.
The Cinema lineup were the zenith of display technology and aesthetics at the time
and offered in six different sizes to meet customers differing needs.

I remember setting one up at our new Apple section 10 years ago.
Customers would gather around with their jaws on the floor as we demoed Macs with it.
What a difference 10 years makes.

Look, an emoji.
Thank goodness Apple has better priorities now.

That emoji.......is ......controlling..........my thoughts......

Everyone's running away from standard form factors, if not to see if what's bold and different will help sales.

Although I poked fun at it, I actually kind of like the case. I really do think it has a nice mix of bold, yet understated styling. I like the easy drive access, because I move drives around from time to time. I like that it can support an optical drive, which is still important to me.

The $600 price tag is a bit high. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and assume it is made from premium materials like a Mac Pro (i.e. thick anodized aluminum, NOT thin sheet metal with sharp edges encased in acres of plastic). On the other hand, if it's made like most PC cases, then the price is way too high.

The main thing ruining it for me is the 45 degree tilt. It might also be too wide to fit on my computer stand.

You give engineers too much credit.

It's more likely that marketing asked them to make something cool and unusual looking and this was the abomination the engineers came up with.

I spent time learning about Windows 10

Windows 10 isn't bad. Now they have proper scaling and the feature i like is official wide system dark mode, unlike half-baked dark mode in OSX which required hacks and just temporary solution if you don't reboot your computer.

Live with both osx and windows is what productivity came better. Some workflow/task are easier doing in windows, some are in osx. Perhaps this fact can open people who still closing eyes with windows which is very powerful now.

Uppss...i typo and i think i must type it MacOs :p

By the way congrats and enjoy your new powerful PC ~ ♪

If the new display is not compatible with previous generation computers it would be completely logical to phase out it BEFORE presentation of next gen. computers.
possibly.. and i'm not arguing against what you're saying.. but i feel you're ignoring the part about apple saying "our competitors make some great displays.. go buy those"..
that's the part to pay attention to (imo)

I see a bit of ego here, gentlemen please do your homework as I did, I won't reveal what I discovery but it's real next TB3 display is coming, I have no idea when (but likely on next Mac event) but it's real,

get real man.. i've seen the results of your 'homework' before.. that you're still posting around here after wwdc under the guise of "I have insider information" is entirely laughable.. i'd suggest having a look in the mirror prior to worrying about someone else's ego.

Im guessing we will know everything in October, not before that month ;).

idk, based off the announcement of traditional display discontinuation... and some things said by t.cook in a recent Washington Post interview:

https://www.macrumors.com/2016/08/14/tim-cook-discusses-his-role-apple-virtual-reality/
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
""" Apple has had a team working on virtual and augmented reality technologies since at least early 2015, when rumors suggested there were a small number of employees investigating how Apple could incorporate the technologies into its products. Apple's interest in virtual reality dates back much further, however, and Apple has filed multiple patents over the years, for products like video goggles, motion-sensing 3D virtual interfaces for iOS devices, and 3D "hyper reality" displays. When asked if Apple had designs on the augmented or virtual reality space,

Cook said:
I think AR [augmented reality] is extremely interesting and sort of a core technology. So, yes, it’s something we’re doing a lot of things on behind that curtain that we talked about.""""
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

... the next display technology we see from apple will not be anything like the displays we've come to know today..**

like, if you think the difference between cmp and nmp is on a major scale, then the difference between current displays and the next level stuff will be out of this world.

----
** (edit)..for clarity, i don't think apple will cease advancements on current display tech.. we'll see these improvements on most of their computers.. imac, iPhones/devices, laptops.. standalone display though? it's over.

Hi all,

Well, if an Apple Thunderbolt Display 2 is coming out, that would be good news indeed. This would indicate that an updated Mac Pro is soon to follow!

richmlow

TBD2 Will use TB3 interface even if launched today there is no single Mac compatible yet (there will be tb3=> tb2 splitters but not viceversa), so the TB Display has no compatible follow up from TBD2, whatever the case if you have a Mac with TB2 ports the new TBD2 display isn't for you.

With this scenario once the TBD1 inventory is exhausted Apple either has to manufacture new TBD1 or nicely ask their customers to pick one from 3rd, the first option it's impossible neither it's actual replacement (the TBD2) Will solve the situation.

So whatever those "savvy" analyst have said about Thunderbolt Display continuity it's BS.

I repeat here write down guys next Apple 's Thunderbolt Display is on the way it's 4K and has as interface thunderbolt 3, no idea how many usb-c 3.1 or ethernet ports, but the info I've verified (beyond rumours and crappy/funny leakers as DNG) Points clearly to this new variations 4K/21“ TB3 sadly won't be compatible with any previous Mac neither will have eGPU on board (or this will be an optional variation).

If it natively ran OXS I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

As might I, since the GPU is configurable to something reasonable to my needs (not duel) and you have decent HDD access. But I'd still prefer a duel CPU set up. $4500 for the base ten core set up is kind rough when you can get base 2x10 core Xeons systems for less. Granted those would have a bit fewer bells and whistles, but many could be added back for not much, and then there the more brute force features the duel processors would have, like extra PCIe lanes and memory support.
