What do we think is more likely for the £1799 model. A bump to 512/8 or 256/16. Ideally we would get 512/16. But realistically what do we think they’ll provide?

I expect them to finally bump it to 16GB, so 256/16, crossing my fingers for 512/16.

512/8 or 256/16, but honestly I just don‘t think we‘ll get 16gb on the standard model, without paying extra.

For the base £1299 model (if they keep it) i understand having 256/8. But for the £1799 model where you’re getting into the very premium market 512/16 really should become the standard. If not you’re looking at £1999 for 512/16. By that price your not too far off the 16” pricing and considering the bigger screen, more powerful processors and dedicated graphics it wouldn’t seem good value for money

I‘m not sure Apple agrees with you. I still think we‘ll see 8gb on the standard one.

Also seeings reports today of Intel's 11th-gen chip (Tiger Lake): i7-1185G7. A 3.0GHz quad-core, 10nm and probably with a TDP of 28w.

There was also a report on Tigerlake having a H-Series part with up to 8 cores releasing at the end of the year. It’s possible the 16 Inch MacBook Pro could use it.

Not sure if they will keep the distinction between the $1,299 and $1,799 models, the lower end one doesn't seem to need to appeal to Air buyers at the $1,299 price point any more, maybe they will merge the two to the higher spec with 28W CPUs, 2 fans, 4 TB3 ports, and drop the $1,299 price point, starting at $1,499 with the same i5/256/8 configuration, but getting all the other benefits, and go up from there?

Yeah I would bet the lower end MBP will be phased out.

Looks like 14“ is still possible.

Just seen that hopefully that does happen because it will look very outdated with the bezel size. Even reducing the bezels to 16” level would still be behind the XPS 13 competition so I really hope they do it
I hope so, too.

Not only do the bezels looks outdated, but they're also uneven. That drives me crazy. So ugly. If they don't do something with the damn bezels, I will be switching to the Surface Laptop. It might be a ridiculous reason to do so, but if I have to stare at a screen, I want it to at least be uniform.

Why do people hate the bezels so much? I'm indifferent to them and just don't understand what's the big deal. Does it look less futuristic to you, or?

Maybe even getting 512 at that price point with options to upgrade the ram to 16/32. It all depends on how generous they are feeling ?

It's mostly appearance, but there have also been times where even just a little more screen real estate would make managing multiple windows a ton easier.

Like, look at a MacBook Air next to the new Dell XPS 13. It looks genuinely antiquated when compared to a near bezel-less system.

Maybe, though that's already effectively the existing $1,799 model at a $300 price cut! Maybe they could have two $1,699 stock options, one with 8/512 and one with 16/256 and then a top end model with i7/16/512 for like $2,199!

at the same time I dont get this push to make the laptops incredibly small. tiny bezels are good if used to make the screen larger.

the xps 13 is a good example of a laptop that could have used a bigger screen on the same chassis as opposed to a smaller chassis with the same screen.
on the other hand they did add a 16:10 screen so that's better.

another example: the HP spectre 13 had huge bezels and a 16:9 screen; last gen they drastically reduced the bezels using the same 16:9 screen. It looks great and compact, but now the (improved) trackpad is actually smaller because of the smaller chassis. and inevitably you can only look down at the screen because it's so wide.
They could have taken the chance to go bezel-less 3:2 but no. shame!

The XPS 13 does have a bigger screen (16:9 13.3" to 16:10 13.4") and a smaller body... with the XPS 15 being so compact it probably makes little sense for the smallest model to be any larger? I'm interested in what appears to be a 16:10 update to the XPS 15, and even more so a new 17" model!

True. I’m not sure what they’ll end up doing. A £1499 model is maybe too good to be true. Possibly £1699 for 512/8. That’s essentially a £100 price drop if they keep to the idea of doubling the storage. They could even keep a £1799 model in an ideal world with 512/16 but that would be too far for them probably?

Yes I realized the xps actually went 16:10 (thankfully)
in any event, with a 16:10 and no bezels they could do 13 -> 14 and 15 -> 16 keeping the same overall chassis size.

The picture in the tweet is the old version anyways. Nobody knows how the new version will look like. The picture can certainly not be an indication of the bezel size of the new model.

and “if everything goes well ...” - I bet Apple has everything buttoned up and there are no ifs in their planning some weeks out. Maybe on availability, but certainly not announcement.

I guess anyone after a larger screen can get the 15" in a 14" size chassis though, at least unlike the MBP line the price differential is much less exaggerated between the two size options, so your personal preference comes into play more than whether you're willing to shell out a heap more for the larger size, or definitely need the extra power. This is one idiosyncrasy of Apple's lineup that irks me!

but this makes sense doesn't it?

I thought the rumour was both a 13" and 14" model this year

13" MBP update internals (Ice Lake) with scissor keys in June at WWDC

14" thinner bezel display with micro LED display in late fall alongside 16" refresh (Tiger Lake)
