That's silly that low power chips are available only for "entry" level MacBooks. The main decision-maker for me is not CPU but the size of the screen (I cannot go lower than 15''), therefore I'm kind of stack with rMBP 15.

I checked Geekbench for fun and found that a new "low power" Intel i7-1065g7 works twice faster than the old "high power" Intel i7-3720QM from my first rMBP (mid 2012). I still use that laptop and found its performance good enough for my needs, therefore I more than sure I won't experience performance loss with the new low power CPU.

As for blender, how many people actually need to run blender all day? Would not be better to buy a desktop for these needs? I have no doubts there are people with needs for "mobile power" but I don't think there are too many to enforce everyone to buy the top CPU.

Overall, I think, I know what I want, I want 16'' MacBook Air.

ok, but Apple isn’t likely to do that. At least not any time real soon. And I definitely disagree that high performance chips are somehow wasted in laptops. You don’t need to run something all day like in my exaggerated example to make them worth while. Remember, we are only talking about a few hundred dollars of difference on a machine that might last for 4 years. It doesn’t take a lot time saved on work to make that worth while.

Agreed. And while the 1065G7 is a huge leap in performance for that power-class of chip, it still trails the quad-core i7 in the 13-inch Pro, not to mention the 6/8-core i7/i9s in the 15-inch Pro. The system that needs Ice Lake the most is the MacBook Air.

Yep, and a 15" MacBook Air with with the i7-1065G7 and up to 64GB of RAM would be really nice. That computer might tempt me and for like 99% of other people, it would probably be the right choice over the H series chips.

Well here we are in the first week of November. What do we think the chances will be of a press release sometime early to mid this week? People like John Gruber and Rene Ritchie were flown to New York to attend Apple briefings on the AirPods Pro early last week, after being notified Sunday night (according to the latest episode of Gruber’s The Talk Show podcast). I’m assuming a similar thing will happen for the 16-inch MacBook Pro. I’m keeping an eye on their Twitter accounts. I also think it would be wise for Apple to invite Marco Arment and Joanna Stern to a briefing, as they’ve been two of the most vocal people regarding the flaws of the old keyboard. We’ll see.

I didn't think last week would happen as Apple TV+ was the main announcement, but I'm still optimistic about something soon.... Why else would the icons and images be in the recent software builds?

There is some logic to the idea that they wouldn't have wanted to announce it last week with with the AirPods Pro and Apple TV+ launches. I'm hoping for an announcement today or tomorrow. If we don't get one I just hope that doesn't mean we have to wait until March 2020.

I'd say for both upcoming Navi 14 based chips... We do expect the 16" to bring Navi since that's what coming to replace Polaris for the mobile GPUs

I think there is a very good chance of an announcement this week given the Adobe event.

However, it's speculation as always.

Do we have any comments from Grubber or Kuo? I mean we did get the Catalina updates but those are giving mix signals for 2019....

I wish Apple made a real pro macbook like Asus Zenbook Pro Duo with two screens instead of a macbook "pro" with a useless touchbar.

That second screen seems like a solution in search of a problem. The damned Touch Bar is already hard to justify in my mind. Now we want something 10 times bigger? what are you going to put down there in such awkward spot?

I wish people would stop with the incessant whining about the use of the word Pro.
If you want that then you'd better explain how a touchbar and a pair of earphones are related to a profession (a.k.a pro).

A browser and a finder window while you work on your other thing on the main screen so you don't have to switch windows all the time.

It's a cool concept and got around to play with one, it's very nice to put the tools from Photoshop and Final Cut down there in my view...

Would also be very cool for me to put some SSH window to a database down there while working on something else in the bigger screen

I don’t need to do any such thing. It’s obviously just a marketing term. You can use an iPhone or an iPhone Pro in a professional capacity, or a non-professional capacity. Just like you can use a MacBook professionally and a MacBook Pro in a non-professional capacity.

My last bit of hope is for tomorrow, otherwise I am going with the 2020 camp, though it still could be released with the Mac Pro later in November or December.

if we were to hung up on this whole “Pro” thing, you’d think the comp would be more like the Lenovo P53 with Xeon processors, 4 DIMM slots, up to 128GB of ECC ram, 3 M.2 slots, configurable from Lenovo with up to 6TB total, Quadro RTX 5000, a 4K OLED if you want it. I mean it’s spec porn to an extent, but if you want pro, that’s pro. Not some dorky screen that cramps the key board and would be nearly useless on a desk.

I’d much rather Apple move their MacBook Pro line closer to that P53 than that Zenbook.

agree, it’s tomorrow, maybe in mid December with the Mac Pro or it’s March, at the earliest, in 2020. It’s a semi-good thing for those waiting (such as myself). It means you’ll likely get comet lake and LPDDR4x.

So all professionals need high horsepower machines? There are no professional authors? All professionals need three rear facing camera phones? All professionals need noise cancelling earphones? And these things are exclusively for professional use right?

There are obviously lots of different professions that have wide ranging requirements.

The stance of "it doesn't exactly fit my professional needs, therefore it cannot be used in any professional capacity" is absurdly short sighted. But again, it's very obviously just a marketing term. Not obvious enough though I suppose.

Pro really is:

"Maybe some more features and definitely more expensive"

Try it with any of their "Pro" products and the definition works everywhere I can think of.

Like the new AirPods with "some more features and definitely more expensive"
There is nothing "professional" about NC and an in-ear design

Ironically, for some users, NC and an in-ear design are actually drawbacks if not complete deal breakers.

(many can never get a great fit with In-Ear designs and there are also plenty who don't get along well with NC of any kind - nausea, discomfort, other issues)

Just to clarify the real meaning of the word "pro".

A cheap drill is meant for occasional use by amateurs. An expensive pro drill is a drill meant to be used on a daily basis by a driller and it has more power, more ergonomy, and more longevity.
