I was thinking about it and if they made 500,000 phones, and 1/5th went to apple stores that would mean there would be 100,000 for apple stores, im not sure but I heard there is something like 150 apple stores in the US so thats roughly 650 iPhones for each store.

Also I heard apple was planning on having 3 million iPhones ready for launch a few months ago.

I just cant imagine more than 500 people waiting at each apple store

Yeah I keep trying to convince myself of this.

Although I went from wanting to go to the store at 6:00pm to going at 4:00pm.

I hope I can get one then, but if not oh well, I will get one in a few days.

The reality of supply and demand does not matter. It is worth a ton of free advertising and publicity for Apple and AT&T. So they want the perception of demand exceeding supply. If it turns out not to be true, it doesn't matter, they already got all the free publicity. So they just need to keep up appearances until 6:00pm Friday.

i wish i knew that they would have enough. cuz its supposed to rain here and ill be outside. the apple store is in the mall and the mall doesent kno wtf is goin on.. the att store is outside but there is a thing i can stand under so i wont get wet

im starting to get quite anxious, and at this point with such anticipation, it would be a real blunder on apple's part to not meet demand. Also you have to wonder if 500 people are going to be skipping work to get a 500 dollar phone in Grand Rapids, MI. I hope we will be ok.

It's not about worrying if you will get a iPhone or not, it's 1) Being the first 2) Waiting for everyone else to get theirs.

marketing 101

I think Apple must get as many iphones out as possible at launch on Friday. Why?
Because as much as the phone is getting knocked BEFOREHAND these forums will undoubtedly fill up with users complaining beyatchin and creating enormous wish lists. That would possibly allow those forced into waiting due to low initial release supplies; to review our Beta-using reviews to hold off until iphone v2 or some major software revision.

Get them out NOW would me my marketing mission.

I talked to an at&t guy at a store yesterday. I asked him if he thinks they'll sell out on Friday and he said no chance... they're going to have hundreds, if not thousands of phones on launch today... i highly doubt there will be a reason to camp out, but showing up a couple of hours early might be wise just in case. I was originally going to show up at 9am but i might modify my plan to show up at around 2 or 3

Of course you know there is another side to your logic... If on the other hand this is as hot as the Wii was at Christmas, then you'll be waiting a long time if you don't get the initial batch.

I live in a pretty small town, but the people at the AT&T store said that EVERYONE has been asking about the phone. Since it is a small town, I don't know if they'll be getting a lot of phones in. I'll probably end up driving by the store every few hours since it's right down the street from my house, until 4:30 when ill hang around until 6.

There most certainly aren't 500,000 units. I have a feeling though there will be plenty to go around with localized shortages, but we'll have to wait and see. Friday is going to be busy, so I won't be able to duck out. I'll run over there after work. If they're already spoken for, then I'll just go home and wait for the torrent of web postings and go back Saturday to play with the demo. If I like it, I'll order online.

I'm with you. I feed my dogs at 0515 every day. I'll then take a ride past the four locations within 10 minutes of my house and check for campers / lines. I'm friends with the police in each area so I'll have them call me as soon as people form a line. The LAST place to form a line is where I'll go, hoping to minimize my "camp time" and increase the likely-hood of scoring my prize on iday.

If I decide to get it Friday (I'm still debating), I'll probably just stop by an the AT&T store after work and see what it looks like, or swing by the Apple store after that.

I'm not waiting in any long lines. if it looks like a line, I'm just gonna get it online.

apple said they were planning on having 3 million ready for launch, I think 500,000 is very very resonable

can you cite apple stating that they'd release 3 million? i think it was a rumor, definitely unconfirmed. it's hard to believe they'd have so many phones at launch.

There's 1200 AT&T stores that will have the iPhone, and of course, all Apple stores (150 of them) will have it.

Do the math. Even if there were just 200,000 iPhones made, there is a good chance you will get your hands on one.

I bet the online store is going to be the way to go. Sure, you can get lucky, but for me, I'll wait a week or two. Heck, it may only be a couple of days...

Anyone who believes 3 million units at lunch needs to get their head examined. Thats absolutely ludicrous.

I think its going to sell out in many areas. Living in a major city now worries me because the chances of getting one on Friday is pretty slim. I will wait in line all day, but I am not going to camp the night before.

wait not all AT&T stores are carrying them though, is that the total number of stores? Or the number of stores stocking it?

Those are the stores carrying the iPhone.

Between all the stores, kiosks at malls and what not, there has to be at least 20,000 places in the US that cell phones under AT&T.

Ohh ok

I know 3 million is crazy thats why I was saying 500,000
