Are they all talking to the same two sources, or just referencing each other?

Lets ponder for a moment how 3 million boxes can be airfreighted overseas and distributed by FedEx in a few days...

The email that went out today from AT&T, directing people to the "find a store" link, says:

"With iPhone arriving June 29th at 6 p.m. in AT&T retail stores, the wait is almost over. Use our online store locator to find the closest AT&T store that sells Apple iPhone (limit one per person). We'll show you maps, directions, and everything you need to get your hands on an iPhone as quickly as possible."

So they must be expecting short supply at least in some stores? Or they would like us to think that.

I'm not worried about the running out of iPhone, I'm worried about them running out of 8GB models. I hope they realize that early adopters are probably more likely to buy the 8GB model, and so I hope they have the right mix on launch day.

Anyone who believes 3 million units at lunch needs to get their head examined. Thats absolutely ludicrous.

I think its going to sell out in many areas. Living in a major city now worries me because the chances of getting one on Friday is pretty slim. I will wait in line all day, but I am not going to camp the night before.

Thumbs way up on your comment.

this is my worry, too. i don't want to find myself asking for an 8 gb model and being told they only have 4 gb models. what would i do? what would you do? i guess there's the online option, but i'd be beyond mad if i waited awhile to be burned by 4 gb models.

My guess is that they don't want them to show up for sale like on ebay and such.

I think its one per person because the only reason a person would want more than one is if they were going to sell the others, I think walmart even limits the amount of phones you can buy each day.

But still even if there were 2000 stores getting them they only need 60,000 iPhones for each store to get 30, which is still a good amount of phones

30 is definitely not a good number per store to carry. 300 would make me more comfortable, requiring roughly 600,000 iphones, but you still need more iphones to satisfy the online purchases. 1 million iphones at least? here's hoping.

300 somewhat alot, do you really think 300 people are going to be lined up outside of every AT&T and Apple store?

Not even that many people where lined up for PS3's or Wiis

100 seems about right, more for the flagship stores....

I bet the manager's won't know until 3pm friday.

if wiis were shipped in huge numbers and had a 6pm friday launch time sold at only 2,000 locations, you'd see 300 people line up for a wii easily.

I dont think it is going to be as bad as the PS3 or Wii myself. There is a high monthly fee, potential $150-$200 cancel fee, and then the diehard early adaptors. They will sell lots of these phones, but I expect to get one on Friday (if I decide to go that route). I really want one, but it is a significant investment for me (need to pay cancel fee to Sprint, $60 month vs $30 current cell phone). I have a feeling others will be going back and forth on this too.

My hope is that Corporate AT&T stores will be slower with the Apple Mall stores being crazy.

Good point. But I do legitimately want to buy two (one for my wife). Considering I have 4 lines on our family account, I hope I can convince them that two is reasonable, and I'm clearly not trying to resell the phone.

Or hopefully this is not the policy at the Apple Store.

but you know there alot more people that wanted Wii's than iPhones, and people weren't under contract with the old console either.

I think Apple must get as many iphones out as possible at launch on Friday. Why?
Because as much as the phone is getting knocked BEFOREHAND these forums will undoubtedly fill up with users complaining beyatchin and creating enormous wish lists. That would possibly allow those forced into waiting due to low initial release supplies; to review our Beta-using reviews to hold off until iphone v2 or some major software revision.

Get them out NOW would me my marketing mission.

That, and they get massive revenue to close a quarter. Even the returns won't be reported until the end of the next quarter.

Of course, based on the reviews it seems like this won't be something a ton of people return. Sure, there will be complaints, but it's not a disaster.

Well, based on the estimated size of the iPhone box on the front page, you could fit at least 80,000 in a standard 40' shipping container. So it would take a mere 38 containers to transport 3,000,000 iPhone boxes. That's less than one average-sized freight train. :)

Now, they aren't using 40' containers to ship by air freight, but it still seems possible.

(Yes, I have way too much time on my hands.)

Think about it. Apple stores are staying open until 12AM(if they are in a mall there is a good chance they are paying $$$ to the mall to stay open late. I know that is the case in my mall) and At&T stores are staying open until 10. Since activation will not be done at the store, it doesn't make sense for them to stay open late if they are going to be sold out in 45 minutes.

I am a firm beleiver that if you want one on Friday you should be able to get one. Apple is not going to make the same mistake as Sony did when they launched the PS3(limiting the numer at launch and 2 weeks after the launch PS3 where sitting on shelves collecting dust)

I hope your right Pete... Im showing up at the mall at 11:30pm at my apple store... I gotta work so hey!

I hate to say that IM still thinking about driving by my AT&T store tom night and seeing if people are out....The apple store in Southlake does not allow people to camp out or stand in line soooo that is going to be a mad house....The At&T stores parking lot you can park right by the door...Im going to back my SUV up and have my laptop along with power cord ready to go...Watch movies and eat pizza all day...

SO to sum up I might be there all night tom or get there by 6 am...One local store stated they plan to see people in lines at noon most likely

THe POlicy is one per customer, no exceptions.

What are you estimating the volume of each iPhone box and container to be in your assumption, out of curiosity?
  • Container dimensions from Wikipedia, using Imperial units rounded down to the nearest inch. (39' 5" x 7' 8" x 7' 9")
  • Size of iPhone box estimated from video and rounded up to the nearest inch. (6" x 4" x 2")
  • Number of boxes figured on each dimension. (78 x 23 x 46)
  • Total number of boxes rounded down (unscientfically) to account for pallets and other unused space. (82,524 -> 80,000)

Going over my numbers, I probably didn't account for enough pallet space. There would more likely be about 70x20x40 boxes (56,000 per container) for a total of 54 containers.

one per customer or one per line on your account, which i thinks makes more sense. no way apple(which gets a share of at&t's revenue genereate for each active iPhone) or at&t would say no to selling 4 of the damned things to someone with guaranteed activation and the built-in cost of ownership.

that's be kind of dumb if they turned away folks like this fellow.

After listening to the radio all day news reports were reporting that sources said that they have a supply of at least one million units. when I got home today I turned on the news(cnn) and they were reporting that apple has at least 1 million units ready for friday.
