It's like you somehow missed that Apple Silicon is a thing and likewise have no idea what it means for their computers.

Also you didn't answer my question. What are you expecting from Apple that they're not giving you?

It means more profit for them and a better user experience due to less heat and noise. That's about it.

I'm not expecting anything, that's my point. I'm over hardware updates.

The performance/efficiency gains are insane for laptops. If you don't do real resource intensive work on your computer such as to take advantage of that, that's your issue, not Apple's.

Also you concede you don't expect anything so this is just complaining for complaining's sake?

I don’t know why you’re so bent out of shape over me stating my opinion that the hardware updates have been boring lately.

I’m ready for something different I guess, not “look at this 30% faster CPU” and brighter screen” woohoo

Sorry, but I agree with @nicetriangles here. The M1 chip and its variants are industry changing. It sounds more like you just don't appreciate the impact that they have, as opposed to any upgrades being boring. There have absolutely not been boring upgrades in the last year and a half.

So far the addition of the M1 and the mini led display have been non transformative for iPad. They are evolutionary upgrades and nice to have but the fundamentals of the device and it’s software capabilities haven’t changed much.

For me, I don’t think the iPad Pro can be overly improved beyond the usual battery /performance /display tweaks.

I have a 2020 12.9 and think it is a joy to use.

I would like to see some improvements on the Magic Keyboard though.

- Customisable functions keys
- Data pass through

Beyond that, my wishes for 2022 are a Mini Pro, with 120hz ProMotion, Smart connector and a Magic keyboard

Likely will release in late 2022, as it will have the M2 chip which isn’t coming until then, so at this point you may as well buy now rather than wait

Yeah, this is what I realized when I made this thread and one of the first comments asked what I was hoping for in the next iteration of the device. I couldn’t think of much more I wanted besides smaller bezels (which might just end with a notch which I’m not sure I want) and a longer battery life. With the rumors of the next generation having a glass back (heavy and fragile) and wireless charging (which I don’t care for), and with the next model still likely being a year away, I just decided to order one now.

I got a 12.9” for $200 off. I figured, not only will I have to wait over a year for the next model, I’d likely have to wait months longer to get a discount this good again, so might as well just go for it now. The delivery date isn’t supposed to be for another month, but I’m fine waiting, and I’m hoping to get the Magic Keyboard on some kind of sale while im waiting with the holidays coming up.

Ironically, the release of the new MBPs is what convinced me to get the iPad. My current 4 year old iPad has been showing its age, and I’ve been wanting to make the 12.9” iPad my laptop replacement for years now. When I saw the prices of the new MBP, and I knew I’d never need that much power, but I also didn’t need a new laptop and didn’t want the 13” MBP or MBA with no ProMotion, dimmer displays, the old body, (it all feels archaic) I was like, maybe it’s just time to finally upgrade my iPad and go all out with the 12.9 Pro + MK + Apple Pencil. It’d be $1000 cheaper than ordering the MBP I would get, and hopefully, it will mean I will no longer be buying both a MBP and an iPad every few years.

We’ll see how it goes. ;)

Seems odd you view M1 MBA/MBP archaic. If anything, those are solid laptops given that not many people will need all that power with the 2021 MBPs. But like you, I wasn't all interested in the new MBPs... given I'm more a iPad user. However, if I wasn't an iPad user... I'll be on a lookout for a discounted M1 MBP.

And I do share your idea that Apple could release new iPPs with smaller bezels that will take on the design language of the new MBPs. I've never really been a fan of the Magic Keyboard... something about not having the freedom to move it however I want (landscape or portrait).

Buying a stand... with a keyboard (Keychron K3 or MX Keys Mini) is a better alternative, but then again... MK provides portability.

It's not so much that I specifically view the M1 MBA/MBP as archaic, but it's more the laptop form factor itself, especially when the designs of those laptops are a few to several years old. The iPad has always seemed much more futuristic to me. Buying a device that doesn't have the same modularity, that has a dimmer screen, no FaceID, bigger bezels, much worse display contrast (mini-LED vs LCD), one has a Touch Bar (which I don't like), and worse cameras, it feels archaic to me. There are also basic features in iOS/iPadOS that have been left out of macOS for years now as well that adds to the archaic feeling for me.

Being able to use the iPad as a tablet with touch, but also as a laptop at a desk with a pointer and keyboard, but also as a device to draw, write, or use a stylus on/with just feels way more versatile and futuristic despite the software and single port only limitations. I'm sure you understand as you mentioned that you're more of an iPad user yourself.

Thanks for linking to the stand. That'll be a good resource to have if I find myself frustrated with the MK when I get it. I am looking for that quick portability you mentioned the MK has though.

I have an idea where Apple might take iPad Pro design from current one into the future. Don’t hate on me for that notch, it’s still just a thought:

In this idea iPad Pro would have two modes that you can switch between on the go:
  • Laptop/Art mode - screen goes all to the edge of the device, having almost no bezel, or bezel similar to iPhone. It would do so while you use it on Magic Keyboard or other stand, also while you use it for drawing. This would give you something around 13.3 inches screen like current MBA. And yes, notch for FaceID until they develop way to hide it under the screen.
  • Tablet mode - while you use it as a tablet you have a black border created by turned off miniLED at border, indicating surface for you to hold the device without accidental touches.
This would bring most of apple devices into the same notch-design language (perhaps even Apple Watch lol, jk). It would also give them at least 2 design cycles for 4 years each - notched design, under-display design, third being folded device perhaps 8 years from now.

Other improvements with next generations would be generic increases in power efficiency, battery, maybe finally software as now they have very powerful MacBook Pros to differentiate from iPad Pros thanks to apple silicon. Remember leaks suggesting apple will move faceid to horizontal position on iPad Pro next year? This suggests that maybe finally they will allow iPad Pro to become more versatile and come a bit closer to macOS but in it’s own IPadOS way. A sign of acknowledgmen… one can dream of course.

In such lineup new MacBook Airs would remain hot seller with colours, 14 inch displays, white bezels, more general user friendly. They will be it’s own separate thing, lightweight all-in-one.

MacBook Pros would set a bar for portable powerhouse, not even matched by iPad Pro so still required for those who need them.

And iPad Pros would be on their own, still not matching MacBook Air in screen size and better lightweight, all-in-one overal portability, not matching Macbook Pros with power, but still being touch screen versatile tablet-laptop for some who want it.

What do you think?

According to MacRumors’ Buyers Guide, a new iPad Pro is released on average every 500 days. It looks like, based on the 2021 model, the next iPad Pro will likely be released in September or October 2022.
Based on the two year average between iPad Pro releases, you’re going to be waiting until April or May 2023 for the next one.

The 2022 11” will be my upgrade from a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5”. The biggest benefit for me, personally, is the USBC connection (Will it be Thunderbolt 3 or 4?). I need to have a secure and readily available place to back up my spreadsheets, and was pleasantly surprised that I can connect more than one SSD at the same time, and even move files from one SSD to another using the iPad Files app. BTW, I expect SSD’s to be a bit less expensive by next summer. They’re not bad even now.

Wasn't the updated ipad pro release in March 2020 and then another updated ipad pro release in May 2021

2018 ipad pro
2020 ipad pro
2021 ipad pro
Yes, but the 2020 iPad Pro models were a very minor upgrade compared to 2018. Tbh, only reason why Apple introduced the 2020 models was specially for the Lidar technology. The 2020 models had pretty much the same A chip that was in the 2018 models.

And because the 2020 iPPs were not a huge upgrade compared to the 2018 iPPs, it made sense for Apple to abandon the typical 14-17 month release cycle.

We’ll get a Mini led iPad Pro 11” and that’s about it I bet.

There were some rumours of a redesign coming but that’ll probably be 2023 as we’ve not seen anything concrete yet and I expect a march/April event again.

Why do you expect another spring event?

The reason most speculate why Apple released this year's iPad Pros in the spring and not fall is because they were in a hurry to upgrade the processor from the 2020 A12Z to M1. There is no M2 yet, so there's no hurry to release an upgraded Pro as quickly.

The 2022 Pro is expected in the fall, not spring. So maybe by then, there will be quite a few more "concrete" rumors about these new upgrades.

For me to upgrade over 2018:

1. Better software
2. Micro LED / OLED screen
3. Larger screen
4. More ports

In that order.
