The spring event will most likely be focused on…

iPhone SE
Watch SE
iPad Air
Maybe another little thing

WWDC will likely focus on releasing the final M1 series macs (Mac Pro, Larger Sized iMac, Mac mini) ending the 2 year transition to Apple silicon as announced in 2020.

Then the usual September event with iPhone, Watch, possibly AirPods Pro.

Then October we will likely see M2 announced, with a MacBook Air, Mac mini and iPad Pro refresh, I expect the 24” iMac will come the following spring or via a press release at a later date.

2022 is going to be an incredible year for Apple, wow. Just thinking about what's likely based on rumors, we've got:
  • New, redesigned MacBook Air
  • New, redesigned iMac Pro
  • New, redesigned iPad Pro
  • New, redesigned Mac Pro
  • New, redesigned iPhone
  • New, redesigned Apple Watch
  • New, redesigned Mac mini
  • An external display?
  • Preview of AR/VR headset?
Christ, that's half their entire product lineup all expecting overhauls with redesigns next year. I'm so excited. Everyone get your stock now...

I doubt all that is getting redesigned in 2022… I would expect Mac Pro, iMac Pro, MacBook Air that’s about it

Reputable sources (mostly Gurman) have claimed even more redesigns on the way:

iPhone 14:

Mac mini:

iPad Pro:

The iPhone I highly doubt the rumours, because the camera bump got even larger this year, and the notch got smaller, so I can’t see how suddenly the camera will become flush and they will completely remove the notch for a hole punch design (especially after taking the time reduce its size this year) they would have left the notch as it was previously if this was coming next year.

The Mac mini is probably the most likely out of the ones I don’t expect to get a redesign, but this glass top design has also been rumoured for a new Apple TV too… so it could be a bit of crossed wires somewhere.

I also doubt a glass backed iPad is coming mainly due to its weight, it’s probably just something Apple is potentially looking into but will never end up making an appearance.

I foresee a lot of incorrect predictions, much like the Apple Watch Series 7. Seems like the rumors are getting further from the truth these days.

Lots of talk about a redesined iPhone SE without a home button and TouchID in the power button, but then an updated report claiming it'll just look like the 2020 SE again.

iPhone 14 getting a hole punch True Depth camera instead of a notch and maybe FaceID that can recognize you wearing a mask. Jury's out on these items.

All kinds of conflicting reports about iPad Air/Pro screens going OLED next year, then not going OLED. Back and forth.

Hopefully some pleasant surprises, but there is always a little disappointment too. Be prepared for both.

Apple's cheap so I find them reusing the 6/6s/7/8/2020 SE style body more believable.

Although personally, I wouldn't mind having plastic chassis paired with bigger battery.

I’m joining this thread, because I’m not sure what to do regarding the iPad Pro.

On one hand I say... I can wait a bit more to see what’s coming with the M2 iPad Pro.
But today I just read that TSMC is not ready to make 3nm chips, and therefore, the M2 will be a small improvement over the M1.

Then, I think about just selling my 11” A12X iPad Pro, and getting an M1. Because I am not interested on a Mini LED 11” iPad Pro. I want a light device. So maybe the 2021 M1 iPad Pro is the best of both worlds...

But as I said, I’m not sure because my 11” A12X iPad Pro is still powerful and capable. The 64GB are the only constraint On iPadOS 14. Maybe iPadOS 15 or 16 will demand more resources, IDK.

To play Devil’s Advocate: It’s possible by the time they refresh the 2022 iPad Pro they’ll have figured out how to make mini-LED components the same weight as their traditional backlight counterparts. That tech was definitely in its nascency with the 2021 M1 12.9”.

I would personally not recommend upgrading from the 2018 iPad Pro 11” to the 2021 version. Not worth it unless you need the processing power of the M1 on your iPad immediately.

You’re right. I have it on sale (on a second hand web) and unless they pay a good amount for it, I won’t sell it.

Something that‘s urging me to get the M1 and rest, is because the predictions on the lack of supply and the rise of prices... I’m not sure if, due to the supply issues, and inflation, Apple will rise the 11” iPad Pro price to the $900/1000€. A price I cannot justify for an iPad.

Based on what's currently out I could see the new Pro models looking like this;

- Some variation of M chip other than the current one.
- Camera moved from portrait to landscape orientation along with Apple logo similar to Apple's logo on the folios.
- Volume buttons act like the Mini 6 where they adjust based on orientation.
- MiniLED for 11"
- More storage options
- Better cameras

Problem is I'm not sure what the selling point would be. Usually Apple does something to sell folks but a new chip won't be it. If the 11" gets a new display then that's enough to push those units but not sure how they could improve the 12.9" enough to get folks to upgrade...maybe have a special storage option for that size assuming storage nuts actually care enough about that or better yet full external monitor support claiming it was a hardware limitation instead of software and a ton of people would upgrade for sure.

To be honest I think the selling point will likely be a new Magic Keyboard which will only work with the newer model via some sort of magsafe.

The iPad is in a stagnant place at the moment, and I don’t think there is going to be anything major for a good few years yet.

Processing power isn't necessarily the only reason. At least for me, lack of storage has frequently been a driving force behind upgrades.

My shortest iPad upgrade time was 2 days (iPad 2 32GB -> iPad 2 64GB). Of course, by then the iPad 2 was backordered for 1-2 months and I was just enjoying reading comics on it so much that I ended up keeping the 32GB and just gifted it to my mom when I finally received the 64GB. Happily, I'm quite content finally with 1TB.

The 2021 iPad Pro 11" 128GB Wi-Fi is currently on sale at Best Buy and Amazon for $699 (and other configs are also $100-150 off). I reckon it's as good a time as any to buy if one's finding their current iPad lacking hardware-wise. Alas, software's the same on all of them so no fix if the gripe is software limitations.

The current MK is basically a magsafe charger.

Doesn’t support fast charging though… also if magsafe is brought to the iPad it could potentially have reverse wireless charging… so it would be an improvement over the smart connector

Are people waiting for more power? I have the 12.9" 2021 model, but I feel even if I had the 2018 iPad Pro I wouldn’t need to replace it until 2025.

I really couldn't give a hoot about next years iPad Pro update. I've got a 2020, which is almost exactly a 2018 with 1 extra enabled graphics core and a better camera. The M1 iPad, athough giving mine a kicking performance-wise, doesn't excite me. Why?
  • Mine will run the current best iPad Pro only games fine.
  • I don't need more layers in Procreate.
  • None of them will run any decent music apps (DAWs) as no-one makes one with basic tempo or time signature changes (I'm looking at you Steinberg Cubasis), except one which based on the app store reviews has buggy releases (Auria). A new iPad won't change this. So still useless for me doing mobile music production.
  • My current one with one dongle into a 1080p screen gives black bars at the top *AND* sides, making it barely worth using with an external display. With 4k I get black bars down the sides (bareable at least). Using a different dongle it does fill the whole 1080p display, but that dongle is otherwise crap. But it's a joke for something of this power.
I don't see that being something new hardware can fix that the software can't.

So I already think the software lets the iPad down. It's great at certain niche things, but is largely a bit of a let-down and stuck as a big stupidly powerful iPod Touch. So unless something changes there the idea of making (or needing) an even more powerful M2 iPad I find laughable. Will they even bother making a 2022 Pro if they updated it last year in 2021, and it wasn't *really* updated before that since 2018?

My new M1 Max MacBook Pro = amazing. It's a big useability upgrade since the previous version (and definitely my much older one). I just can't see how anyone could need a more powerful iPad when a MacBook wouldn't absolutely kick its ass in all my useability scenarios. To me the Mac totally kicks its ass in everything that doesn't involve the pencil (or just scrolling news/social media with my finger). So I'm curious why anyone thinks the M1 iPad isn't enough power for what they need it for, or why they wouldn't just take a far more useful MacBook Air or the like.

Good write up! The lack of pro music software is so annoying for me too. I’d love to trigger my drums with the iPad Pro, the power is there but the software isn’t. And the DAW stuff probably has no way still to bring in any plugins…

Boy, I now hope this thread is right because I just ordered an 11" iPP from Amazon which is on sale for $699. How much memory in the 11" 128GB model?

I do think the next Pro will have to have the M2, and I expect the M2 to debut first in the MBA. Maybe there'll be an event for the MBA and iPad Pro to both get the M2 at the same time? I could see a ~May event where that happens. Or maybe the MBA gets M2 in ~May and then it trickles down to the iPad Pro in ~October... Hmmm... Many possibilities, and it's all exciting.
Logic says... oh, since Apple announced M1 first on the MBs, then... obviously they will introduce the M2 on MBs again. But I agree with MBA and iPad Pro being announced at the same time introducing the M2, Apple introduced A14 with the iPad Air 4th generation along with the iPhone 12s September 2020 event.

I’m in line for whatever Apple gives us in the iPad Pro line for 2022. My 10.5” iPad pros terrible battery has been continuing to get worse and worse.

I’m hoping that whatever the top screen technology is makes it down to the 11”model. I’m not interested in the 12.9”. But I buy based on whatever the highest quality display is at the time, so will go 12.9” if that has the more advanced display at the time.

I will be buying the pencil this time around as well. After seeing my boss use his for note taking, the use case for it is evident. My analog note taking is fine, but my ability to organize and archive my own paper notes for work when I’m moving between corporate office and WFH has left my ability to refer back to notes on shambles. Pencil will fix that .

I just hope it comes in some neat colors to match my iMac, and. No notch. Yuck!

So are the biggest changes for the iPad Pro in 2022 basically wireless and reverse charging? The rumor I read from Mark Gurman is that the iPP for 2022 will gain a glass back for wireless charging.
