I would like to see something like Magsafe added to the next ipad pro

The lastest ipad mini should of had wireless charging

But then you mean the Mac’s version of MagSafe, right? The iPhone version can only put out 20W at the very best, creates a lot of heat and will take a long time filling up those iPad batteries.

The Ipad Air is next up for its upgrade, and if hypothetically its gets some kind of faster refresh rate (maybe not full fat Pro Motion) the A15 with 5 Core GPU and 6 GB RAM for the same £579, where does this leave the Ipad Pro 11?

I believe the next Air is no longer expected to get an upgraded display. OLED is off the table next year and it’s doubtful ProMotion will ever trickle down below Pros.

If it gets an A15, 6GB RAM, quad speakers and upgraded cameras, that leaves the 11” Pro with more RAM, more storage, ProMotion and thunderbolt. Then when the next 11” Pro is released, it’ll get even more attributes that outclass the Air.

This thread should be called “Waiting on iPadOS to catchup“. I have a 2018 12.9” IPP and have tried very hard to convince myself that I need the 2021 version but in the end I can’t think of single thing that the new 2021 IPP can “do” that mine can’t. As long as Apple requires iPadOS to support 2GB RAM iPad models and doesn’t budge from their “touch first” mentality, there isn’t much that continued hardware improvements is going to achieve. It’s Apple’s choice, of course, but its disappointing that they are also keeping 3rd party developers from advancing new use cases (think iDOS getting yanked, and no virtualization apps allowed on app store.).

Also i find all the rumors about glass back and wireless charging to be beyond strange. Exactly who is asking for this? Glass back would be heavier and more fragile, not to mention how would it work with Magic Keyboard on? It sounds like a horrible idea.

I'd be surprised if an M# chip gets announced in an iPad before any Mac, at least right now. Given that, we would have to at least wait until the MacBook Air is announced (rumors point to summer 2022) for the introduction of the M2.

Honestly, all I see happening during the next refresh is an M2 spec bump and the 11" getting a mini-LED display along with other minor niceties (camera improvement, more wireless bands, etc.) Given Apple's current design direction, I don't think we'll see a refreshed design any time soon.

I'll upgrade my Pro next time they change the screen tech - whether that be OLED or Micro-LED.

I think we will get a redesign with the next update. I am hopeful for Spring with the M2 MacBook Air but wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see the new design until Fall. Apple will love being able to sell all new accessories to us as well.

The new iPad Pro models will be designed for landscape first, with the iPad/Air/Mini remaining as portrait-first devices. All new designs to better accommodate MiniLED displays with new speakers, cameras and microphones plus improved thermals for the M2. I also hope the new design sets the stage for a larger iPad Pro down the road.

What are some aspects of a new design you’re envisioning? I feel like the rest of Apple’s product lines are still catching up to the current squared-off form factor that Apple introduced with the iPad Pro on 2018, so I can’t really envision what they would do outside of minor refinements.

It’s just time for a change. Rumors point to a glass back. Not sure the benefit of it. Maybe to add support for MagSafe like magnetic charging? Or reverse wireless charging or accessories?

My concern with a glass back is weight - just like how the iPhone's got heavier in the 8 series. I would like them to move the camera; my hand is blocking it at least 75% of the time since I primarily use the iPad in landscape.

The reverse charging could be interesting, but I would have though Apple would go with a side MagSafe like on the new MacBook Pros and not an puck like the iPhone, but we shall see.

More rumors about a "iPad Pro Max" with a 15'' or 16'' screen starting to pop up again.

I would welcome that but yes we need iPadOS 16 to catch up to the powerful hardware and more pro apps.

I also doubt they're be a new iPad model in 2022, but likely significant software upgrades.

I'm sure it'll be the year of the iMac, the new 27" Regular, Pro, Max, and Pro Max models.

I'm with you on that. Besides maybe the 11" getting a MiniLED mini-upgrade I don't see anything else happening.

M1 - fastest processors available - CHECK
MiniLED - in the 12.9" - CHECK
8-16GB - huuuuge RAM upgrade - CHECK
up to 2TB - CHECK
5G - CHECK

so then what? More battery -> more weight. Less weight -> less battery

I could see a tiny update (12.9" getting newer Wifi, newer lower power 5G chip), 11" same plus Mini-LED. Not worth the upgrade for anyone with a 2021 model

I have the 2018 11” iPad Pro and nothing so far for the 11” models has been worth the upgrade for me.

If the 2022 11” model comes with mini LED and maybe a new design or colour I might be tempted to finally upgrade.

Also, the new MacBook Pro’s with mini LED promotion can drop to 10hz while the iPad Pro can drop to only 60hz? I might be wrong but maybe that’s another possible upgrade.

I'm asking why you expect a spring event for the iPad Pro. We know there will be a spring event, but I'm wondering why we should expect iPad Pros in the spring.

Honestly, I'm not opposed to it. If they want to update the Pros every spring, that's cool, but that would be a more accelerated refresh cycle for them to stick to compared to most of their previous Pro release cycles.

We would definitely expect less impact in those refreshes, though.

Ohh, sorry I thought you were just asking why anyone would be expecting a spring event to begin with.

Anyway, personally I'm not positive that the new iPad Pro will be released in the spring. There's a quote from one of Gurman's newsletters that mentions the new iPad Pros:

There’s really nothing else left of substance in the road map that would be ready for 2021. Instead, look for a larger Apple Silicon iMac, new Mac mini, new iPhone SE and new iPad Pro after 2022 gets underway.

That implies an earlier-than-later release in the year to me, but he's noticeably careful not to peg down an exact timeframe yet. I think an 18-month release cycle would probably be the most likely for the Pros going forward, but I could see 12-month updates here and there based on silicon timeframes.

I do think the next Pro will have to have the M2, and I expect the M2 to debut first in the MBA. Maybe there'll be an event for the MBA and iPad Pro to both get the M2 at the same time? I could see a ~May event where that happens. Or maybe the MBA gets M2 in ~May and then it trickles down to the iPad Pro in ~October... Hmmm... Many possibilities, and it's all exciting.

I would agree with you that the likely release dates are in May with MBA or October.

I know Apple will never do this but I‘m still dreaming of the iPad Pro turning into a Dex like device when plugging in external monitor and if we can choose to boot into MacOS. Or at least they could give us full external screen support and not just the 4:3 aspect ratio for iPadOS.

They can't really add much more to the hardware if the software doesn't follow.

M1 is already very powerful and iPadOS can't really take advantage of it as there's not enough pro apps. Unless Apple brings pro apps and triple-A games and not just the "kids games" of Arcade. Otherwise a M2 is just over the top, more so than already with the M1 + 16GB Ram.

A 15''-16'' iPad Pro "Max" screen option would justify an upgrade in 2022 however.
Omg that would be so awesome. 16” oled please.

rumor is tsmc is behind on their next 3nm process which means another generation of 5nm. My guess is next gen iPad Pro will focus on graphics and not CPU. Something that I dont' think most of us will feel because mobile games are.... mobile games.

Maybe they'll put the better screen filter from mbp on the ipad pro to limit blooming?

New FF like a glass back seems unlikely. I don't know, I just don't see it. Seems like a disaster.
