Week 40. Got it two days ago. Was going to keep it until I saw how many dead pixels my iSight has.

Whilst it's completely your decision to return it, I do wonder if you'd ever actually notice the iSight dead pixels when using it?

Not as if an iMac is a good portable professional camera ;P

Week 47 here:

1. No
2. Yes - a yellow band about 4-5" wide running down the full length of the screen, this is an intermittent problem!
3. No

Week 50, for me personally, when I change the desktop background to a solid color, especially either of the grays, I can see the yellow at the bottom of the screen much more apparently than using "the test".

EDIT: Lots of dead pixels.
EDIT: Screen flickering apparent.

Obviously this is a bad news for consumers but what a nightmare this is going to be for Apple. I would still like to see just 1 new iMac that doesn't have this problem.

I have a week 50 i7. Using the test website I find that I have no dead pixels and at most a very very small amount of yellowing. It is only noticeable when viewing the test- normal display use is perfect. I have none of the other situations as of yet and I think this is the best computer I have had out of 20+.

Very Happy as of now.

I wish I had not cancelled my order yesterday because some of those pictures you guys posted look really good and much less yellow than some other pictures I had seen. I would have been fine with those. I really screwed up canceling.

Well... at least it wasn't "your" fault ;)

If you want to see lots of dead pixels open Photo Booth then zoom (Ctrl + Mouse gesture up.)

Don't feel bad. It could be worse - you could have ordered, had the money taken days ago, Applecare initiated 8 days ago and still have no clue when the machine is due to arrive.

Please show us just one example of anything at all that you do on your computer that has suffered, or will suffer, because of what you say you see.
Anything.
Even a little thing. You've talked about it a lot here and on other threads, so it must be impacting you a lot.
Just show us one teeny weeny example of how this problem affects ANYTHING you do. Even just the smallest project or activity you can think of doing.
Or even the title of a specific movie or game that you feel will be compromised by the problem. Or any photo you've taken that will be rendered unacceptable due to what you've discovered by looking at your blank desktop colors.
Anything.
You choose.

why should he..??

if its faulty, its faulty...end of story.

If it affects him or not is completely irrelevant.

Didn't you replace an iMac because of the HDD noise ?

That you don't have a problem with the uneven screen is fine by me. But stop judging other people because they do have a problem with it. Especially when color consistency is something the damn thing was advertised with.

Why do you insist that others stop complaining and live with their defective product. Defective is defective. It is not what they paid for. If I buy something and it has a problem, I return it, unless it is something that I personally decide I can live with...but that is a personal decision, not something I should have to be convinced of.

No offense intended, really, but I think your posit is absurd. For $2000 these days, a new computer should be damned close to mechanically and electrically perfect, and Apple shouldn't be burdening its customers with expensive computers it knows have a decent chance of being faulty right out of the box with one or more of several known issues.

I love the double standard that you have setup for yourself.

No-one is knocking those with genuine problems... I'm on my third Quad iMac because of terrible hard drive noise.

Just love how only you have a genuine problem, and how only a hard drive "noise" is a legit problem.

Great point!! Sir cecil, I can respect the fact that you wanted your new iMac to have a normally silent HD. No one in here has told you that it wasn't a big deal and that you should have just forgotten about it.

Why are you giving people such grief about the yellow tinge? You make statements about how people are returning normally working machines, but then you yourself have returned how many machines due to a HD noise?

Talk about a hypocrite!

Why didn't you just keep your "noisy" HD iMac until the 14 day return period was over, then it wouldn't have bothered you anymore.

One example? You mean one that archipellago, SilenceBe, boombashi, knewsom, hakr, 53x12 or 09iMac=Fail didnt cover? Well since the screen is starting to flicker intermittently on top of everything else I'm just wondering if I should get a fire extinguisher to keep on my desk in case my shiny new iMac bursts into flames.

Oh wait... you were being sarcastic weren't you, that kind of stuff just goes right over my head, doh!

Very well. As can be seen from my equipment details, I do a fair amount of audio recording and editing. A drive that bumps and grumbles loudly to an extent that it can be heard on a microphone recording or through headphones when working is not acceptable. Your turn.

My question is aimed at those who say they perceive no yellowing on their screen unless they do the so-called test on this thread. I ask them to name a single action they can think of performing on their computer that will be affected by a "problem" they cannot see unless they perform that test. Simple question.

I'm not talking of people with a very clear and important problem they can readily see without performing a test of dubious nature. If your screen is yellow (or if it flickers or has light bleed or anything similar) then exchange it, of course.

But don't trust the ramblings of those of a never-happy-with-anything mentality who would have us believe that all these machines are riddled with ghastly faults, who would urge people to cancel their orders or wait three months to buy or suggest that the "problem" they can't see will worsen with time or, frankly, any of the other negative tripe they love to put out there while they go through their habitual process of returning half a dozen machines or more every time a new product is released.

More BS. I just got a second machine last night, and the display has worsened in 24 hours. Quit trivializing the problems these machines have. They are real and they are bad.

Why is using a "test" that uses a few simple bars not indicative of regular user? Do people not use white backdrops, or screens in their daily use? If color is affected in any way how can you do reliable color work? I have three different temps across my screen at the moment. It is worse than any cheap TN panel I have ever seen, and is completely unacceptable.

Quit defending Apple for no reason. If you are satisfied with your machine, great. That is all that matters. That doesn't mean that there aren't a HIGH number of defects with these things, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a near 100% faulty rate with these screens. You should post pictures of your supposedly correct screen. My guess is that most consumers just dont care or realize though, since people are like that.

The very name you post under suggests you have an agenda.

For my part, I did not post a test saying "If you cannot hear hard drive noise, do this test and see if it's making a noise you would never have noticed".

Again, your handle says everything that one needs to know about the way you think, and the dissatisfaction you like to spread. Sad.

I've been here a while and never seen this volume of complaint with any new Apple product launch. Are you seriously saying there is a group of people who pay thousands of dollars for a top spec machine, for no other reason than to send it back over and over again? Most of the stuff I've read is people agonising over whether the problem is "bad enough" to force them to send it back.

I don't know about the US, but returning stuff to manufacturers is a PITA in the UK. The thought that people would spend $3000+ for no benefit other than to spend hours on help lines complaining is absurd.

I'm dreading my impending i7 delivery because of real well documented reasons. Will it be DOA, is it worth spending hours setting it up just to have to return it? I hope I'll be lucky as I REALLY don't want the hassle of a substandard computer.

I can't understand your motivation for talking such nonsense, especially as you have had first hand experience of one of the many 27" iMac issues.

It's a shame that you have let your enjoyment of the delivery of your new iMac be ruined by a forum. Remember, user forums are a great resource but do not necessarily reflect a true representative proportion of customer experience. Believe it or not there is probably a vast majority of happy customers whose iMacs are not inflicted with "real, well documented" problems (some would actually refer to it as anecdotal evidence). I also don't think they are so ignorant that they wouldn't spot real issues.

Obviously there are always going to be some issues but us forum members tend to be far more vocal on the negative and relatively silent on the positive. We often repeatedly post "updates" in the "relevant" threads and jump on anything as gospel if it supports our claims - an issue can soon appear more prevalent than perhaps it really is. Combine this with Apples very effective marketing which sets unrealistic expectations and mix that with Apple aficionados slightly anal tendencies then it's quite a firestorm that gets created. I know these things as I can be as guilty as the next person.

One final point, I love Apple products but I'm a realist - in the immortal words of Public Enemy "Don't Believe The Hype" - it is all about the bottom line. You're not paying a premium price for some amazingly super high specced components system, far from it (just look at the GPU) - you're paying for marketing, lifestyle, image and aesthetic design. The actual components Apple use are not any better than many mid range PC manufacturers which you would be charged far less for.
