Flickering Solution?

I seemed to have ended the screen flickering by making sure the iMac is the ONLY thing plugged in. I unplugged my stereo and the flickering hasn't returned. Can anyone else confirm a similar finding?

Day 6 of using my week 50 i7 and I am having no issues to report right now. I don't see ANY yellow tinge, and have not had any flickering or blackout issues.

Apple just released a firmware update for the flickering issue

I just placed a call for my 3rd Imac (First 2 had the yellow screen).

Apple recommended to swap it again.

I cannot believe that they are still shipping machines with this issue.

They know about it and even told me that my machine fell within the batches affected yet they still shipped it that way.

Way to go Apple!

Their QC is non-existent and they just don't seem to care. You could probably swap 20 machines and they would just tell you to get another.

Well it could be argued that the hardware itself is not defective, if the firmware update fixes the issue, which at this point I really want to know, since the update was released just today there are not many reports yet.

Mine is W8946. A standard i5 which behaves perfectly... for now!

Mine is W8949 Standard 2.8 MHz i7 and did have screen flickering & blackouts. It's at the Apple store being repaired (Taken in 12/19.) So, I'm not sure if the firmware update would help or not, since I can't apply it. There were no other problems with it.

When they call me to pick it up or when I get there I will ask them if they applied it. If they didn't I will ask them why didn't they and/or if I should apply it.

The firmware will never fix the yellow display

That is either a backlight problem or a defective LCD panel.

LG makes the crappiest LCD panels and Apple chose to partner with them.

No wonder.

You get what you pay for - Cheap is crap

Afaik, LG made the panels in the 24" iMac and these were great !

LG was not the only manufacturer of those like they are for the 27

Also I had one and it was crappy also (severe backlight beed) and spotlighting in all 4 corners.

It too was uneven from top to bottom but at least it did not look pissed on.

I doubt people would qualify the 27" or the 24" iMac screen as crappy when compared to pretty much any other screen out there that doesn't cost 1000$ or more.

Especially with the 27", I don't think there is even any other LED backlit and IPS screen out there, other than the 30" Apple Cinema Display which costs 1800$ !

Serial number: W8950****

27" i7. The only upgrade was the chip (from i5 to i7). Ordered on Black Friday.

I received it Dec. 11th.

No Flickering at all.

No yellow tint that I know of. I'll only know 100% if I get my hands on a nice DSLR camera. I think the iphone's image sensor isn't dynamic enough to get a clean image, but the pictures I have taken with my iPhone don't have any tinting so far.

No dead/stuck pixels.

No cracked screen.

I have not updated it with that new update that fixes the screen flickering.

Pardon my cursing, but so far, it's been #&@$ing fantastic. I love it. It replaced my 2005 iBook G4 1.2 Ghz, so this is one major upgrade for me.

Great to hear you're happy with it. But beware! A swarm of zealots are about to descend on you to convince you that you DO have the Yellow Peril and should be returning your iMac as faulty. Re-visit this site at your own risk because I assure you they will not rest until you do their yellow test and your Christmas is ruined.
Begone while the going is good and enjoy your wonderful iMac :)

Another one who apparently can't read.
Thank god we have such an enlighted person... . You sir are just a hypocrite, now matter how you try to spin it.

Before accusing others of zealotry I should suggest you use a mirror and look at it.

The first time I will use the ignorelist because I'm sick and tired of reading your moaning and bitching in different threads about the subject.

Well although there seems to be some big issues relating to these computer's, I have ordered an 21.5 & can't wait to get it going.
Only the 2nd major purchase by myself & 1st after browsing these forum's , however really looking forward to switching to Mac & getting what Apple offer.
If there is an issue , be sure to hear my 2c....:)

And remember to keep a fire extinguisher at the ready just in-case that iMac bursts into flames only to ignite the family Christmas tree in the process exploding that wonderful aftershave from Cecil's Aunt Minerva and Uncle Waldo.

Don't ask

I'll be opening my 21.5" on Christmas Day. I will check it out & report back. It's a shame a lot of people on here reported a problem, but left out the batch number from their Serial Number in their replies. I ordered mine from B&H in NYC on Black Friday, so there's no telling what batch it is. Hopefully the updated latest fixed batch. Thanks. Very informative post!

Didn't those screens also suffer from uneven colors/gradient ?

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9526071
Yes. I had one (three after swapping) of those "great" 24" iMacs and they all had this gradient issue. On top of that they had yellowish/brownish corners and the screen burned in after a few weeks of use. They replaced the lcd panel and it had tons of hot subpixels. I decided to get it fixed again and after that I sold it (it had dust and dirt behind the glass.)

Great lcd panels, nah...

Today I received my 27 inch i7 iMac... after powering it up I immediately saw a black dot smack in the middle of the screen. After some more examination the verdict was 3 dead (black) pixels, 2 stuck pixels and some sort of black smear (dirt?) on the inside of the screen (left corner, approximately 1 cm wide). So Apple is taking it back and I'll have to wait for a couple of weeks to get a replacement. And hoping that this time they'll get it right.

Yea Good luck with that replacement

My second one is yellow.

It literally looks like someone pissed on a white piece of paper.

I am waiting for the 3rd. Looks like a Jan 7 delivery.

That seems so far away.

At least I still have the yellow one to use until then.

If they were so bad, did they get fixed in the production process at some point?
