Gotta be in it to win it
I was quasi tempted for the 6s, but it makes more sense to wait. If I was going to switch carriers and get my kids phones, them maybe, but we decided to hold off.
With Apple knowing their cycle it's always a struggle to decide to go for the new model or the upgraded model. Whatever cycle is chosen seems to be alway be some surprises of one sort or another.

Yeah every cycle has it's temptations of course... But with the current cycle, it wasn't enough to get me to pull out the wallet again. And honestly I am still extremely happy with my 6 Plus. It performs like a champ, still feels up to date, and I recently found a totally awesome case that makes it feel kind of like a new phone.

I'm dying to have force touch of course, etc., but on the other hand I'll get twice as many new goodies next year :)

With iPhone I think its better to stay on the s cycle.

I currently have a Nexus 6 which I'm very happy with both the 5X & 6P don't really interest me, so I'll be waiting until towards the end of next year for the next wave of Nexus Phones, one of them will obviously come with the snapdragon 820 & that the one I'll be going for.

I have never had a Sony Xperia so I am getting more and more interested in the Z5 Premium.
Galaxy S7
Note 6
iPhone 7 UNLESS the rumors are true and they get rid of the headphone jack and use the lightning port instead. Will be a dealbreaker for me.
While not a deal breaker for me (I use Bluetooth headphones) that would be a really dumb move on their part unless they include Bluetooth ear buds with the phone, and even then I like having the option of using regular headphones when my jaybirds are low on battery.

iPhone 7 Plus sort of interests me, ONLY if iOS 10 is a major overhaul. Allow some sort of customization Apple already, it's 2016, not 2008 anymore. The same homescreen full of app icons, like the app drawer was left permanently open, and the same animations for like 8 iPhone generations is a frigging joke already. And not being able to drag down a specific app icons and place it anywhere on the screen, are you kidding me ? How bout widgets on the home screen already ?

So if iOS 10 is just more of the same of iOS 9, I will for sure pass on the iPhone 7.

iOS and Android both have some big needs. iOS ten should likely be big. Pure Android needs to be more aggressive in the tablet market but a lot of that starts with development.

Rumor: OnePlus 3 in the works with Snapdragon 820 and a 1080p display, alleged renders leak;
http://phandroid.com/2015/12/09/oneplus-3-renders-leak/

According to a popular Weibo leakster, OnePlus is working on a OnePlus 3. It’s slated to have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chipset and 1080p resolution, though not many details could be had at this point.

This looks interesting. Looks like OnePlus are still going against the whole 1440p thing, which I'm starting to care about as I am soon to be a VR user. Since OnePlus have switched to AMOLED with the X, that seems like a given. This could be the killer phone of 2016!

I think there is a lot of potential for a lot of the big players in 2016.

Apple will have a redesign year for the iPhone. Time to make some dramatic shifts, maybe? A dedicated back button for more consistent experience navigating through iOS? I know that sounds unlikely, but one can dream?

Likewise, for Samsung and their flagships, it's time to really nail that OS optimization down. If the rumor of them partnering with Google to optimize TouchWiz is true, it could be very interesting. And on the hardware-end, if the rumors are true that they are just planning to spruce up a few things, like add USB C, etc., it could be an amazing all around device.

Lot of potentials...

True, but typically that type of info is kept secret by Apple, the full breadth is usually unveiled at the keynote.

Pretty sure Apple has had a knack for not holding secrets to themselves. What was it, the iPhone 4 or 4s prototype that was left at a coffee shop in SF taken only to have the guy who took it have his house broken into? Yeah, I won't hold my breath on their "secrets". When they innovate again, maybe we will see these so called "secrets."

The problem with that mentality is that by the time a new Nexus is declared, Qualcomm will have already prototyped their new processor due for Q4 release if not Early Q1. Right now, the best android phone, voted by many, is the 6P and Note 5. Being satisfied with the N6 is one thing, but to hold out because of a processor isn't a good thing mainly because Qualcomm has an upgrade date towards the end of each year.

I'm sure you'll see some of the "secrets" revealed at the Iphone 7 keynote.

When was the last time we didn't know what was coming in an iPhone? I can't recall. Not since the 3G, I think.

Nexus 2016 is my main phone that I'm excited to see. I'd really like if Google made another 6" Nexus. I love the 6" display on the Nexus 6 and I don't think I could go back to anything smaller.

I'd also like to see HTC rebound with a One M10. If I could get a Google Play Edition HTC One, I'd love that. :D

Samsung are supposed to be releasing a 6-inch S7+ if that's your thing

Samsung Galaxy Note 6, with a MicroSD slot. If it doesn't have a MicroSD slot it better have a 128GB variant, or I'm screwed as there's nothing else that interests me in the market.

Well all the rumours were spot on this year. With pretty much everything
The last time I think we were really "deceived" by rumors was 2011. We got a couple of parallel rumors regarding the "iPhone 5" and the "iPhone 4s". In fact, up until a couple of days before, business as usual here was "There will be two devices". When the 4s finally came out, a lot of people felt let down.

Ironically, the 4s was one of the most popular iPhones.

As much as I love the displays and cameras of Samsung devices, the software kills the experience for me. I have to have stock Android or something extremely close to it, TouchWiz is still too bloated for my tastes. Now if they made an S7+ Google Play Edition, I'd be tempted

As a very happy Xperia Z3 Compact I am very curious what Sony come up with next year. With their speed they should be up to Z8 by the time I get a new phone, but truth is I just don't know what they can improve from Z5 Compact. It just seems perfect. The only thing I miss in my Z3 is a fingerprint reader which Z5 has.

Maybe Apple releases Siri for Android. ;)

Re-iterating what I wrote in the Nexus thread...

I'm getting excited for the S7. If the rumors are true (less focus on hardware and more on software), the potential of this device will be amazing.

The lack of design change might hurt them though sales-wise.

I have my share of 4g LTE smartphones, aren't we close to 5g? If so I am waiting. If not, my addiction will continue.

Thought so. Not many people like TouchWiz. But I know what you mean in terms of 6-inch phones. I currently have an S6 Edge+ (TouchWiz is my thing) but having held a Nexus 6, despite being very wide, even for my hands, I really like the extra size, and my next phone will probably be in that territory.
