I loved the music, the setting (postwar Vienna, shot on location - astonishing), cinematography, the realistic and credible - an intelligent and interesting - story (postwar cynicism amongst the defeated and black market dealings), the cast (outstanding - not just the obvious Orson Welles, his stunning turn as Harry Lime, but others - Joseph Cotton as the writer who was a gormless and clueless friend, Trevor Howard as the British officer with a quiet integrity, Alida Valli, as the betrayed love interest, and the others in a terrific cast.

Above all, I loved the fact that the movie had the courage of its convictions and was prepared to aim for the bitter sweet integrity of art, and allow for a downbeat ending, - when it became clear that Holly Didn't Get The Girl, as she walked out of the screen and out of his life - rather than seek to satisfy audiences with an expected 'happy' ending. Brilliant.

Balkan Brass Bands, or, more to then point, Serbian brass bands (a sound that is a mix of classic Balkan folk, along with a touch of Klezmer, and a bit of of the roving and travelling musicians - such as are found in the gypsy music form that part of the world, - added).

The group are called Boban & Marko, - (this particular album is called 'Balkan Brass Fest') - and some of their stuff is excellent.

My son almost had me in tears this morning.

Today was his kindergarten graduation/promotion to 1st grade. While it was fun seeing them all in class, while his teacher was showing a 'year in perspective' DVD of all of what they did this year, he was sad and crying because he was going to miss all of his friends. That made me think of missing all my childhood friends, which immediately these two came to mind.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have time time to spend with family. :)

BL.

Any place but here or there....
I wish I knew the name of the song playing behind this tribute for Dick Wei. I am not crazy about the vocals, but musically it's one of those catch dance / electronic numbers I could listen to for several hours on a loop.

of course, Dick Wei imagery playing alongside doesn't hurt. :p

Sometimes I listen to music in other languages just to hear them, even if I don't understand the lyrics. This one's in Thai:

Yes, I do that sometimes, as well. Some songs are just better sung in their own language - it suits the melody, or air.

It's strange..... I do the same thing with Eurovision songs too. Can't even understand one word, but i still like it..

Eurovision used to have some excellent songs - ballad style songs - rather than the pyrotechnics of many of today's entries - in some of the earlier competitions.

Yeah, unfortunately Eurovision kind of disappoints me, especially since so many countries submit songs in English. I want to hear the native languages, not thick-accent English. -_-

Listen to some of the winning entries from the 60s - they were mostly in French, (or German) and were the sort of ballad style songs that were popular in (non pop, non rock loving) circles of western Europe at that time.

Precisely because popular music (rock and roll, pop) dominates the musical and cultural discussion on what we cal the 60s, we sometime fail to see that other forms of music (catered to by outlets such as Eurovision) also enjoyed wide acceptance and considerable popularity.
