Nice choice. I picked up the deluxe CD/DVD recently. The album's ubiquity, "Tears in Heaven" and the neutered, coda-less "Layla" unfairly hurt the reputation of some great material. I'm particularly fond of "Signe," "Lonely Stranger" and "San Francisco Bay Blues" (complete with kazoo solo).

For my part, today my brain is jammed in a singular groove:

I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean.
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right,
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags
that time cannot decay.
I'm junk but I'm still holding up this little wild bouquet.
Democracy is coming to the USA.

I have an odd feeling that we have that album, bought when it first came out, oh, a few years ago.

Great choice.

And Leonard Cohen has long been a favourite of mine.

For some strange reason, I am in a somewhat melancholic mood this morning, the kind of mood that only something such as Philip Glass or Karl Jenkins might assuage.

There's a lot of that going around. A mysterious media-bound flu. Some, I assume, are immune but my circles seem uniformly infected.

I expect I'll soon be listening mostly to old instrumental jazz. Mysterious, ambiguous, occasionally dissonant, lingering, and with abrupt changes in time signature. Let it just seep in. Music will be an insufficient salve.

Any other moody, or, er, somehow atmospheric melancholic stuff in mind?

Philip Glass - I have just realised - is too bleak; I want moody melancholic music that offers just the tiniest sliver of hope somewhere, tucked away, almost entirely obscured in layers of mood....

Well, I'm on to this right now. Not sure it fully satisfies the requirements though.

As my brother said tonight on the phone, maybe our mother - who is gradually checking out of life having had a great time - has the right idea, and that crawling under the duvet and staying there has its definite attractions.

No, not Shostakovich.

And certainly not Rachmaninov, though must say the The Isle Of The Dead........sounds strangely alluring just now

File this for later. I honestly don't know what to make of this beyond its album's timeless title, Obsolete Systems. Definitely moody. No slivers, but plenty of surface noise from the needledrop. Maybe that'll help hearken back to better times -- when pre-hipsterozoic vinyl roamed the Earth.
I may have typed all this simply because need to speak, have nothing I care to say, and right now typing is as close as I can get. Yes, that YouTube video embodies the current psychosonic structure girding my sanity.
