While looking up a Dead Wax video for @rm5, I typed that name into EweTube's search bar, found that video, but also noted there was a video they did about Vulfpeck! Just watched that, it was an interview with Jack Stratton, the founder of VP, but he wanted to discuss a record by Esther Phillips (they didn't discuss VulfPeck hardly at all). She recorded the song "Use Me" with a crack team of studio musicians, and released it the same year that Pick Withers released his version, which has entered the canon. Esther's version doesn't have that signature Clav line, but it grooves in an equally funky way. The DW and Jack determined that the track was probably played lived with Esther, then a crack arranger (whose name I can't remember right now) probably wrote the backing vox and the horn tracks afterwards, as they dodge and weave between her and the rhythm section, never stepping on anyone's toes.
This is a delight, hope you enjoy it; now I'm off to amazoid to see if this is still in print.

Alright, I challenge you all to clap on beat 1 during the drum solo and make it through the ENTIRE thing. I can hardly do it—takes really careful listening, especially for subtle tempo changes:
