My iPad is indispensable for work, I use it for:

- MS Teams meetings with colleagues. I find it a lot easier to carry around than a laptop.
- Reviewing, scanning and marking of documents.
- Email and accessing certain internal company sites.
- Reviewing of documents with clients. Again, I find it more convenient on a tablet.
- Zoom and Teams calls with customers.

I still have a company issued clunky windows laptop which I occasionally use to access legacy Windows systems.
Not to say your reasoning is bad. But the list that you have provided (besides marking up document) can easily be done on a laptop. Again nothing against you but after owning and returned a few iPad I still can’t find a reason to own them vs getting a laptop with OS like the MacBook Air.

One thing that bugs me is that the iPad can’t even stand on their own physically (unlike the surface pro from MS) which means to get any real use out of the iPad you’d still have to buy a case or keyboard of the sort.

As much as I love tech, I see iPad rsther redundant. I think the only about iPad is that it is easier to use than a macOS especially for older people. My parents for example have no problem using an iPad but I’m not sure if they’d do well with a full OS. Then again they are just surfing the net, Facebook and watching YouTube and streaming.

True re the laptop but if you want a tablet form factor, that doesn't matter.

I just got an M2 12.9 and MK a couple weeks ago to use as my main device. I had an old Intel MBP that is now sitting in a drawer (will probably trade in to Apple). I mainly use the iPad as my personal laptop/tablet, so mainly browsing, email, messaging/FaceTime, and watching media (love the mini-LED screen!).

Some games. Mostly docs, pdfs, media. Browsing. Reading. Don’t use pencil.

That said what an iPad will do for me is help get its replacement later by selling it. A vision pro. I don’t see wanting an iPad again. Vision pro is the oled iPad I wanted.

Avp means no more worrying what size iPad to get. No worries about weight or holding it. Can use it for much more especially screens.

In terms of money spent on apple it just tilts toward avp. Take away iPad and a few other things.

What MacBook is it? You might be able to sell it here.

iPad is an extremely versatile device, being able to act as a phone, laptop, television, cash register, cookbook, drawing tablet, music keyboard, second display, gaming powerhouse, ebook reader, smart display, easel, just about anything you could think of, it can "do" it with par performance.

So, there's many possibilities on what to do with the magical slate. This depends on model, of course, but I use mine for everything I do, as a main device. My question is, what do you do with yours? You can include as much information as you see fit, I'm just curious what they can be used for.
I use my iPad in my business to go paperless by eliminating the paper forms that I have to fill out each day. It's a big time saver.

Also, with my iPad Pro when needed it is a flashlight. We have enough power outages here where that comes in handy also, because I have plenty of storage, I can load it up with stuff to watch and off line games when the power is out.

I use my iPad extensively for:
  • reading books
  • annotating materials
  • writing papers in LaTeX
  • editing / arranging photos in Google Photos
  • Music production (SunVox, NanoStudio 2, GB)
  • Mail / Safari / YT
Often, I wonder whether I should get a Macbook Air, and replace both my Mac Mini (M1) and iPad (9). But my conclusion is always that this combination offers me the most for the money. But I use the iPad so much that I might allow myself a higher-specced model someday. On the other hand, I do not miss a lot with the 9 and it is easier on the mind to carry around a cheap device that can be replaced without trouble.

I have a new use for my Ipad with OS17. I have had a problem with headaches for years. I'm now able to record when and how bad without having to rumage around for a pen. I think the potential for monitoring your health is enormous, especially with the watch as well. I was impressed to find the data from my watch on my activity had automatically been synchronised on my Ipad as well as the phone.

A lot of video streaming. Some basic photo Culling and editing, though sadly it’s not there yet for this (in my use case), LucidChart for work, and I’m trying to get going with things like nebo or good notes, nebo makes more sense, good notes is way more polished but lacks the awesome handwriting support of nebo (though I am starting to wonder if nebo is really that much better than notes)

I cannot find the battery percentage life left after frequent charging like we can on iphone. :(
I find that my battery is pretty short when using apps like garageband or procreate and battery falls rapidly from 100 to 60 at the time so i have not been using it often.
This is the primary reason I got iPad AppleCare. £3 a month or something like it and I can get a battery replacement (which I’ll need for sure). Yes, I could pay for that replacement later and if it didn’t cover accidental damage, I wouldn’t pay for AppleCare, but the accidental damage puts me over the top as I can, and do, use the iPad (and my phone fwiw) without a case. As soon as I add a case to the iPad it loses so much usability for me.

Anyway, food for thought on a next purchase maybe - I doubt i’ll Claim the very few scratches on my iPad even, I’ll just go for a replacement on the battery which will give me a refurb anyway, and avoid the surcharge.

Fwiw my iPhone 13 Pro looks brand new ,I just keep it in a pocket alone, and the iPad has been dropped from waist height about 30+ times without breaking. The newer devices are so good on the drop resistance and finish holding up!

Academic here.

Work: teaching, pdf annotations, signing documents, travelling companion, some e-mail and a replacement for pen and paper. Using Mendelay reference manager and word I could do complete manuscript writing but the screen is too small. Some Keynote work is easier on the iPad than on the Mac and vice versa. With assistance of the pencil, presentations are superior with the iPad that a computer.

At home: web browsing, streaming movies, some 3D work, gaming, and help in the kitchen displaying recipes. It is rather robust and easy to clean.

My iPad serves these primary purposes:

  • Second screen for my iMac.
  • For drawing and illustration.
  • Organisation tool.

I bought the iPad in 2020 with the intention of it replacing my laptop. However, after acquiring my iMac, its role in my setup became secondary. I’ve also been using my Wacom tablet more, which diminishes the need for the iPad further.

During a recent two-week trip, I relied solely on my iPad, but unfortunately, it didn't meet my needs adequately. I won’t be in the market for a new iPad until its capabilities improve.

My cellular mini doubles as my phone (voip app + buds):
  • Nobody on the other end of calls or texts can tell I'm not using a phone.
  • iPad cellular data is farrrrrrrr cheaper than iPhone plans.
  • iPad mini is farrrrrrrrr cheaper than iPhone and
  • tends to have a longer use life than iPhone too, so this 6 replaced the 2 used the same way for many years before it (not many iPhone owners get to skip 4 generations or about 8 years between upgrades).
  • IMO, all apps are generally better with more screen RE.
I know the vast majority of the Appleverse can't imagine any scenario without an iPhone but this works perfectly fine for me. I know most people believe an iPad can't be used as an iPhone but a quick download of any of many VOIP apps in the store will illustrate that even wifi iPads can become phones (text your iPhone and reply back to yourself, call your iPhone and then use the latter to call your iPad). It "just works."

I use my iPad mini 6 for media consumption - YouTube, RSS reading etc.
I also use it as a super-portable computer for short trips and commuting. Having 5G is fantastic compared to using Personal Hotspot on my MacBook Air - I just pull the iPad out of my backpack and it’s instantly connected to the internet, and has been the whole time it’s been in my bag.
I used to have a 12.9” iPad Pro, and I think I’ll replace this mini with the rumoured OLED 11” iPad Pro next year.

The two things I use my iPad for:
  1. Filming stuff (occasionally)
  2. Reading sheet music/charts off of it (regularly)
All other tasks—writing, media consumption, video work, music stuff, etc. is all done on my Mac.

This is pretty cool! Of course my watch wouldn’t function without a phone, but for those without one, great idea.

My work is done entirely on a work-issued laptop, so it’s personal use only. I own both a 4th gen iPad Air and an M1 MacBook Air. Honestly the only real difference between the two is Pencil support which I do use every now and then. Otherwise typing this comment would have been more comfortable on the MacBook and the screen is bigger but that’s details to my limited use. I’m keeping the MacBook in a drawer to see if I miss it and if I could maybe sell it.

In general my iPad does what my iPhone could, but on a bigger screen. Nothing fancy for me otherwise.
Okay one addition; during my holiday I did some illustrations for a small book project. I started with the book layout in Affinity Publisher 2 on my MacBook and then made the drawings in Procreate on iPad. I finished it on the plane on just my iPad by importing from Procreate to Publisher for iPad.

This type of work is great on iPad and works perfectly with Mac. Works as advertised in this case.

It is my main mobile computer I use to run my real estate and property management business. I take a lot of notes, work with a lot of forms and contracts, create pdf's, sketch properties, edit photos. I basically use it for what I used to use my MBP for since Nov. 2021, and it reduces my workflow and is just much more intuitive and fun to work with. Imo the iPad is the most versatile computing device that Apple has ever sold, and can replace the traditional laptop for many people. Yes, it is slow coming, but each iteration of iPad OS brings the iPad that much closer to the perfect computer for more and more people.

In my signature, there is a link to a thread I started about what you can do with your iPad. Also a link to why the iPad became my computer of choice.
