I'm a math instructor. I connect my 12.9" iPad to a projector or to Zoom and use it as a virtual whiteboard with Good Notes, making recordings of lectures as I go. When the lecture is done, I can make the lecture notes in PDF form to students. I use it to write up exam solutions, to fill out PDF forms, and to do write solutions to math problems for myself.

I use my iPad mini as a portable device for reading books, searching the web, taking or looking up notes, and GPS.

I use my laptop for spread sheets, writing papers, and the like.

In my signature, there is a link to a thread I started about what you can do with your iPad. Also a link to why the iPad became my computer of choice.
I can’t see your signature or anyone else’s. I looked in my preferences and the box is checked so I’m not sure what’s wrong. I am using my iPhone, maybe that is it.
Can you please post the link to your thread that you mentioned?

My original purpose for buying my first iPad in 2010 was for surfing the web. With the improved capabilities and proliferation of new apps over the years, I use it for more tasks. The light weight compared to my MacBooks makes it more versatile in a pinch. Easy to throw in a bag and take camping instead of packing a laptop--the battery lasts forever.

*Web surfing, YouTube, etc
*Airplay streaming to TV such as from Hulu, Paramount, Peacock, Prime Video apps (faster than Smart TV interface)
*Bible apps (Youversion, Logos, etc)
*Multicam live streaming via the Mevo app
*Zoom meetings, Handoff phone calls/Facetime
*Various iOS/iPadOS-only apps

ive been trying to install an ipad app that isnt available any more. i have it on my ipad mini and would prefer it on my ipad2 with the larger screen. its a graphics program - 'Inkpad' and is vector based.

it was initially open source and can still be located here at github:

i not know how one goes from github to ipad?? Does anyone here know?
the latest versions are under ownership, and need a later ios, or arent available in the NZ app store.

On your iPad you need to go to App Store --> Purchased --> Not on this iPad. Then you can download the App.

Note: Any apps you previously downloaded in your iTunes history will appear in "Purchased" even if the app was free.

Inkpad - Graphic Design

Honestly, I bought iPad 9th generation for surfing the web and YouTube, Netflix, HBO Max and creating Pages documents and taking notes and using couple more apps.
I used to use my iPad mini too from 2014-2022, but you can't really surf the web with it anymore. Otherwise I'd still use the iPad mini 2

Erm..not in this case. I know wot you've suggested is the norm..but in iTunes in the 'purchased' list Inkpad is not listed..nor found in a search..even though I can run it on my iPad mini. It seems that since someone has taken over ownership and made Inkpad a 'pay to use' app, availability has somehow changed???

My next plan is to try using iTunes on an iBook - once I re-install leopard

You may need to try downloading InkPad 2...last version for iOS 9 --> last iOS for iPad 2 (9.3.5)

Yep - tried that. Just get a 'not supported' on my iPad sort of message...or at one time, 'not available in the New Zealand store' message. So far have not had the usual 'would you like to download an earlier version ' message pop up. I think it may have come under one sort of protection. When I read the notes on Inkpad, a guy states that when it was no longer updated he took over control ..and I think consequently made it a pay for use instead of open source..but I'm sketchy bout that sort of thing..so may be wrong

I use my 2018 12.9" IPP for watching youtube videos; email; texting; viewing various pdf manuals (e.g., the operators manual for our 1970 John Deere tractor); Paprika; a couple of games; looking at and sometimes editing photos and videos; general web browsing; online shopping; online banking; various weather apps; Omnifocus; creating and editing lists in Reminders; Fantastical; Kindle; and some other things that I can't think of offhand.

I like my IPP a lot, but probably won't replace it with a new IPP, as it would cost more than a basic MacBook Air. I'm thinking I'd rather put that money towards an Apple Vision Pro. We'll see ;)

I have an iPad Pro 12.9" and an iPad 9th Gen. Shockingly, I use my iPad Pro 9th Generation almost every day and use my Pro 12.9" sparingly. My current most used Apple devices are iPhone, iPad 9th Gen, iMac, and MacBook Air in that order.

iPad is used as a super portable work / personal machine where I have access to certain corporate apps managed by a corporate VPN (Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Edge, and stuff like Bloomberg) as well as my personal stuff. I use it for communicating with colleagues while traveling, viewing work stuff in the various apps, accessing Safari and PDFs, taking notes, etc when it comes to work. When it comes to personal, I use it for iMessage, Mail, web surfing, various personal errands, and entertainment (movies, streaming).

Critically - a lot of what I do in the second paragraph CANNOT be done on a Mac or even Windows laptop. In order to access corporate apps on my MacBook, I would need to remote login to my work machine via Citrix, which can cause latency issues on the go. Plus - the cell in the iPad makes it more portable.

The fact of the matter is that for some workflows, iOS (or a tablet OS in general) combined with a cellular equipped iPad is better than the MacBook. The issue is that you still need a MacBook for certain workflows too.

personal use/creative endeavors:
- reading (e-books mostly, sometimes comics)
- note-taking/planning
- research
- browsing
- messaging
- drawing
- some photo editing
- some games (iPad Pro only)
- display for sheet music/tabs
- FaceTime every now and then
- pass-around photo album during family visits

day job:
- note-taking
- some concept drawing
- reading documentation

For personal use, my iPad(s) have in a lot of situations replaced a laptop. Long-form writing I will still usually do on the MBA, sometimes on the iPad with a Magic Keyboard attached. I do sometimes wonder if I could get by with a fully loaded 12.9" iPad Pro, but there are still a number of things that I can't do on an iPad or I prefer to do on a Mac, so it's not going to happen any time soon. Plus, MacBook and iPad just nicely complement each other IMO.

It’s my main personal device, my job provides a MacBook so that’s covered there.

I use it for everything. Web browsing, light games, coloring, banking, grocery shopping, Reddit, shopping, YouTube, jotting down notes/recipes, watch tv shows or movies on my Plex server. My personal needs are very basic.

I've had my Air 5 for about 3 months now. It is purely a (very nice) fun toy for me and I am completely satisfied with that. I stream media from it while I'm sitting at my computer. I like to do all my calendaring on it. I play a *lot* of Roller Coaster Tycoon on it, and I use it for reading in bed. When I'm working I usually have it on mute with the news playing with subtitles on Sling, in case anything newsworthy happens that I wouldn't want to miss (I guess I have a problem lol)

I bought the original, base iPad when they were first introduced. After that, it was two iPad Airs in a row, followed by an 11-inch iPad Pro with the M1 chip. All were great.

But that last purchase finally forced me to acknowledge that I don’t do a lot of heavy lifting with my iPads. Basically web browsing, email, texting and e-commerce. I prefer to process my photos and occasional videos on a desktop — my 2019 iMac. Even if I’m going to do some serious writing or compose important emails or letters, I default to the iMac. I find the keyboard and larger screen real estate very helpful.

And that’s why, when my niece needed an iPad Pro, I gave mine to her and picked up a 10th-generation iPad on sale for $399. It works fine for my needs. I might have bought another Air, but the current model still has the camera located where your right hand will block it when holding the device in landscape position - which is 98 percent of the time.

I’ll probably never go higher end than the Air from now on. And if the next base iPad gets a good processor like the A16 or M1, I’ll probably stick with that.
