I don’t know if the anger Linus has shown toward the M1 in his YouTube videos is genuine or not, but either way, it’s not normal.
Want 100,000 subscribers quick and easy? Pick a random thing to "hate" and dislike it in the most absurd over the top way. Even if you don't really feel that way, there ARE folks that do and since you've shown an affinity for their worldview, they'll stick with you for awhile. :) Of course, now you've got to stay in that lane or you're a sellout and that energy that used to be with you is now against you.

I don't disagree that "pro" is a pretty meaningless marketing term but generally in the Mac world it refers to graphical/video/audio content creation.
Apple defined it as someone that uses a "Pro" app at least once a month. This was during their description of the kind of machine they were working on (which became the Mac Pro).

The “Pro” label is meaningless and I think it is so last century. I find that label misleading as well embarrassing. Apple is run by old men addressing old men making decision in the “pro” space so the label likely stays.
What do non-old men use?

And you can even double dip by later on releasing a video titled "I was WRONG", and even though you follow a pattern of this kind of behaviour those same followers will now frame it as you being "unbiased" or some nonsense.

I do feel sorry for some of the better tech youtubers out there who have no option but to go for clickbait titles to get the hits.

”don’t buy x until you’ve seen this”

”the truth about x”

”why you shouldn’t buy x”

“What Apple don’t want you to know”

”Huge Apple leak/spec leak/price leak” (often with no leak at all, let alone actual facts)

Its just tiresome to be honest.

Also, these guys just reacting to things like Apple Keynotes show exactly why they should stick to scripted stuff.

I get it, it’s not easy standing out from the crowd, but a lot of it is getting really tiresome now and I much prefer the written word of some of the long-established Mac sites and podcasts.

To be fair, there are relatively few "hate" videos in the Linus tech tips channel. There are various reviews and experiments, and the videos tend to be informative and of good quality. You don't reach >10M subscribers if you only do low-quality stuff. And he doesn't always "hate" Apple. He's made a couple of positive reviews on Apple products.
But his position on future M1 Mac is weird, and not entierly honest IMO. As a tech guy, he should be enthused, at the very least, by the performance levels of these Macs. I think he's just bitter that the M1 beats his favourite intel CPU at 1/4 the power.
When he reviews these Macs, I expect him to spend most of the time complaining about RAM and expansion limits, and lack of native apps + games. He will probablly compare the M1 Macs to PCs with Rosetta apps like Premiere, together with Cider games.
Dang, he's even managed to find a particular case where Premiere beats FCPX, and he now uses it as a benchmark. Almost anyone using both apps knows that FPCX beats the cr*p out of Premiere when it comes to performance.

Yeah, I feel like he's letting his frustration with the way that apple marketing presented the m1-based systems color his coverage of the systems themselves. I understand that he doesn't like the lack of specific stats and benchmarks, but maybe make a video that's about that aspect alone and then leave it out of the rest of your coverage (except for a quick mention) instead of rants in every video!

I don't get the anger at a presenatation aimed at less technical people being....less technical. If it was aimed specifically at CPU geeks (like me) and the like and the level of detail was low I would not find it informative. But I understand it was not aimed at me per se.

Wait, so why do we care what Linus says, I don't get it. He has never handled an M1 Mac so on what authority does he have to say anything relevant about it beyond pure speculation? In a few more days we'll get some "real" data, not just clickbaity headlines.

Its from Linus´s livestream where he talked with Dave Lee about the M1 and all the media around it.

They agreed that the M1 will defniately be smashed to the ground by something else next year, that the m1 will be obselete then. Can they be right about that? Linus compared it to the Apple Watch which apparently the first version got smashed by the second version by far.

But isnt it always like this? Every year comes a better mac, why are they so "defensive" about that or use it as critisism? Dont all companies do this? Strive to make something better every year?

Linus also ment that people who buy the new macs with the M1 will basically be beta-testers for apple.

Thoughts?

He's absolutely correct, you should be extremely cautious buying a gen one product from any company and you'd have to be a downright moron to transition over to Apple Silicon for a professional work machine any time before gen 2 of M1 chips and software (Big Sur successor) which is probably late 2021, early 2022.

This forum has an allergy to anyone critical of Apple even though the majority of Linus' critiques against Apple are 100% valid.

Oh and for goodness sake, it's almost 2021 and boomers on here still think that anything coming from YouTube must be BS and clickbait. Yes, a good portion of YouTube content is garbage but so is a good portion of opinions on MacRumors' Forums -- doesn't mean we should go around judging every forum poster and their content because of (quite a) few bad apples (pun intended).

I agree 100 percent. Linus was mostly right here. He simply was reserved in his opinion until he had access to actually silicon. Basically every other tech “reviewer” simply parroted with Apple’s presentation said.

I really don’t know why Jonathan Morisson felt the need to make a rebuttal video and cause all of this drama. Linus never actually said anything bad about the silicon itself. Apple presentation was very vague, “latest pc chip”, “best selling pc” in its price range? Apple appears to intentionally hid stuff, and Linus called it out. When tomorrow comes we will probably see Linus was largely correct in being guarded.

In the end of the day, I would trust someone like Linus, who is genuinely passionate about tech in general, and is staffed by intelligent people such as Anthony, than I would Jonathan who is simply passionate about Apple, and has very little knowledge on how systems actually work. I rather watch Anthony do a deep dive in how it works, power consumptions, etc, than Jonathan fire up geekbench and Final cut and say its the best thing since sliced bread. As Jonathan anything technically, he probably can’t answer, Linus and Co will.

Not ONLY that, though. :) A big difference between a MacRumors forum member and a YouTuber is that a YouTuber NEEDS to get people to watch their videos in order to make money, and everyone‘s aware of that. So, we KNOW there are times when they look at the analytics for their past videos and that determines what they say in their next video more than how they really feel about the thing. BUT, those few YouTubers that aren’t imploring you to MASH THAT LIKE BUTTON and HEY FEWER THAN HALF OF YOU ARE SUBSCRIBED WHY DON’T YOU MASH SUBSCRIBE WHILE YOU’RE AT IT? Yeah, those few are the ones that aren’t just in it for the money. They’re likely gainfully employed elsewhere and are saying what they say because they want to say it and not to increase views.

Skepticism is different to overly critical and snarky. Linus is the latter. That’s why the rebuttal video exists. Linus comes across as passionate but biased in the opposite direction to the shills who parrot Apple. There are other videos Linus has besides this one that prove he isn’t as objective towards Apple compared to other companies. The one with the dev kit and getting a call from Apple is a good example of being obtuse when in the wrong.

Linus is snarky and egotistical in general. Neither of us really knows what’s going on in the guys head though. He was not incorrect for going after Apple’s presentation. For an Apple hater, he uses and iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac Minis. He really just bashed the presentation which VERY vauge and shady. As a performance enthusiast, I largely came to the same opinion he did, even though I ultimately ordered it anyway.

I’d trust him over TLD by a county mile though.

I took the presentation for what it was. Vague yes but bold. Shady? Really? That’s some knee jerkiness. His video lacked attempting to understand why Apple approached things from this angle. Apple usually isn’t this bold. I would agree with shady if they were lying or selling vapourware.

Not sure who TLD is but I would compare Linus to Anandtech. I prefer Anandtech’s approach.

I think we generally do though, yeah? Like in my daily job I have to be considerate, confident, attempt to change minds through facts and figures for the betterment of the company. He has to be... whatever it is he be. :) If being in ANY way different had the potential to obtain MORE clicks/views, he’d be that. What’s going on in his head is “making a dollar”.

Absolutely shady, they said the 10w chip is faster than the “Latest PC Chip” and fully unleashed it was double. If they were as bold as you claim, they would have said what PC chip it was. Obviously this latest PC chip was far from the greatest, but I’m sure a lot of consumers will wrongly assume ”latest” means “greatest”. Shady marketing tactic. If they were so bold they would have compared it to 15w Renoir and not some 45w i5/i3 or whatever the heck this latest PC chip is lol. Typical shady marketing.

When they compared it against the Mac Mini in CPU performance, they compared it to the i3 version instead of the i7/i5 version. An 8th gen i3? Really? If it was so bold, they would have compared it to the i7, but i3 makes the numbers look bigger I guess.

Against the Macbook Air, they were bold and compared it to the i7, but these UVL chips are extremely weak.

I prefer Anandtech myself, and don’t go to Linus for serious information, but some of his staff, like Anthony is pretty bright. He will be the one doing the review. I am also looking to what Andrei has to say at Anandtech.

Thing is people seem to miss some details and go flying off the handle. Apple didn’t say latest pc chip. They said latest pc laptop chip (can’t remember if in live event if they said single core). In my book if someone says UP TO I don’t consider that mean absolutely. Up to 2x. They never said fully unleashed it was double. These are the things that come across as hyperbole and knee jerk reactions to statements that weren’t actually made.

Check the product page and you’ll see bold statements with quantified that aren’t necessarily all speaking about the same goalposts. Vague yes. Shady? Not a chance.

Bold also doesn’t mean without limits. Apple still purchase from intel. I wouldn’t want to make them look bad by name in a media conference. That can influence stock prices as well. Namely intel’s.

Finally Renoir probably lies in that 2% of CPUs M1 isn’t faster than. Shady would have been Apple saying M1 is faster than all CPUs in my opinion. This implies Apple did compare M1 to many CPUs including Renoir.

Finally what does Apple have to win by being shady? If the M1 is garbage we find out in a shorter timeframe than the period of time the refreshed air, pro and mini would be available for and their sales take a hit anyway.

Say Apple found a way to release another low end soc next year only it was 10x faster and put all other laptops to shame. that would be awesome. I would buy it day one and be happy both that I bought the m1 and that I replaced it so quickly. more likely they will just upgrade the case to please the case weenies.

anyway. for me the wait is not for gen2. i need a new desktop too and will wait for the more powerful gen1 pro chips. late in 2021 I hope to buy again

using the iPad example, I in no way regretted buying the original iPad and then replacing it with an iPad 2. which I kept a long time and replaced with iPad mini gen2. Some machines you keep for ages, some you dont. I have mentioned before this mba I just bought replaces a mid 2010 macbook. I love Linus but he isnt believable. he would buy a machine to keep a week, who is he trying to fool
