Completed Combat Evolved: Spartan Edition great fun, very nice upgrade on the original. While thinking of what's next, spun up SCP - Containment Breach a free survival horror game based on the works of the SCP Foundation community. Undeniably simple, yet utterly evil in execution...:)
maxresdefault.jpg

SCP - Containment Breach is highly immersive, creeps right under the skin. Bare bones graphics, however don't be fooled as the game is easy to learn, hard to master and will catch you out as it delivers as promised

Might promote me to look to Allan Wake or Control as they too exist in the SCP Universe as the next playthrough 🙂

  • As per @Queen6 post, just downloaded Combat Evolved: Spartan Edition, a free, legal PC stand alone Halo mod (report soon).
  • Recently started Control, purchased on sale at Steam. Paranormal, you are a gifted person who can wield paranormal force, how did you get into the middle of this conflict? The game keeps that a mystery at first.
You show up on the doorstep of the Federal Bureau of Control with a desire to explore this corrupted location. You have a habit of addressing some unknown entity (at least to the player). You have a history here, as it is stated your kid brother disappeared 17 years ago with these people.
So far so good, until I bogged down in a boss fight I’m struggling with. I‘ll probably stomp off after 20 attempts.
For anyone familiar, it’s with an annoying, flying corrupted person (Tommasi), who flings double shots of highly damaging projectiles at me. Yes, I can fling via telekinesis and shoot a pistol back at him, but his projectiles come so fast it’s hard/impossible to sidestep them if you are exposed.

  • World of Warships- Fun enough to keep playing besides the frustrations of game balancing ala Wargaming. (Invisible destroyers with huge, unrealistic torpedo volley, WWII submarines with homing torpedoes.)
  • World of Tanks- Recently restarted playing this, spent over a $100 on new tanks, once again getting disgusted with random battles and questionable Wargaming match making. May uninstall this soon. (Famous last words ;))
For anyone who likes tank games, I’m keeping a casual eye on this, possibly just a demo at this point, I’ve not downloaded yet, but plan to soon.

Dead Space...
dead-space-header.jpg

Playing on the hard difficulty level after a good couple of years without touching  Stands up well & truly in 2022  Dead Space was a passion project and it shows, if your into horror & Sci-Fi it's a must play.

Dead Space remains to be an iconic Sci-Fi game in the action, horror & survival genre's. Action is ever present, crank up the difficulty the survival aspect really kicks in. As for the horror it's not deeply psychological like Alien Isolation, equally seeing your avatar being literally torn to pieces when you make the wrong move impacts.

If you want the horror, survival experience play the game on hard. The lower difficulty levels tend to offer a more action focused gameplay. On the hard difficulty level you have to think & act fast with limited resources in order to survive. A game to play, not watch as it rapidly becomes ever deeply involving...

I tweaked a few settings in the Nvidia Control Panel, added the mouse input fix, locked the FPS to 100. Game plays fabulously with a real sense of intention & purpose. You are Isaac, you are in this world  Tension mounts as you play against ever increasing odds, tactics matter as brute force is very far from the solution...

Still looks great and plays better

While I am still waiting on my queue for Steam Deck, I’m enjoying playing some recently ported PC games on Switch:

Shadowrun Returns (released mid-June) - just finished this over the weekend. Took a couple of patches to stabilize but overall a solid port that was a blast to play. I hadn’t played since first release (2013?), and this time played as a mage which was an interesting difference from before.

Then while also starting Shadowrun Dragonfall, I also played the new release Portal. Got stuck on one late game timed spot (not as good with controller and got frustrated), looking forward to diving into Portal 2.

Regarding the first boss fight in Control-
Control has a game difficulty setting called Assist mode. This made all the difference. :D
I upped Energy Recovery by 10 (max 100), Damage Reduction by 10, and Ammo Recovery by 10. I also turned on Aim Snapping. You aim using by right clicking, and you snap right to your target. Hey I have have psychic powers, I should have this. :D It made the battle very doable.

Of note, after the fight, I turned off Aim Snapping, but who knows when I’ll need it again? In this case it was for a highly maneuverable flying opponent, who I could not hit with anything I flung at him.

I’m not yet ready to endorse this game, but enjoying it. I like the telekinesis, picking up objects with thought and flinging them at opponents. It bothers me a little that your character appears to have a memory, but you as the player are in a fog, it’s just go with the flow and do the missions you are given.

I really enjoyed Deadspace on XBox. As compared to AI, at least here I am armed. :)

I think it's safe to endorse anything made by Remedy. It's the only studio that I'd be willing to purchase a game before seeing reviews. My favorites were Max Payne 1+2 and Alan Wake, but Control was good fun. Recently, Remedy announced Alan Wake 2, which I've been waiting over a decade for.

The common thread is that they were written by Sam Lake, so if you enjoy the writing in Control, it's even better in Remedy's previous games. I don't think science fiction fits his style nearly as well as noir settings.

Played a little of Kane and Lynch: Dead Men, is just ok, mostly average. Then booted up Kane and Lynch 2: Dogs Days :) Couldn't put it down, completing the game in a single session (short game). Just a fantastical romp serving up a fest of Hong Kong film style action madness  Really interesting presentation, like found footage (need to turn off the shaky cam). Up to the point if you die, the camera hits the ground LOL.

The Kane and Lynch games must have touched chord with the GOG crowd as the games and now Sleeping Dogs are the top 3 selling games LOL. Stranglehold is another in the same ilk and literally the official sequel to John Woo's epic Hardboiled starring Chow Yun-Fat. Overall Sleeping Dogs is the best of the quartet and three of the games are now on sale with GOG for peanuts...

If into the genres & style must play's :)

I played Dead Space originally on the fat PS3 (it's still alive & kicking :p). Game is graphically far superior on the PC and with a patch to fix the unusual mouse input (tied to FPS !!!) the game can run at a 100 FPS without issue. Passing 120 will likely bring issues.

Alien Isolation is a far more phytologically focused horror title, where the player's fear & tension is literally dialled up to eleven for the duration. Play in the dark with headphones, it's a totally immersive experience and can be very unnerving. Possibly one of the best, if not the best Sci-Fi horror titles ever produced  Game is timeless and one to play. Dead Space is more traditional horror with a level of gore being ever present and tension driven by the number & type of necromorphs (hard) requiring the player to think fast and switch weapons frequently to survive.

I’ve been a fan of the developer, Io Interactive, for a long time, and I enjoyed both of those. The first one had some of the mechanics from Freedom Fighters, like ordering your squad around, but it always seemed a bit half-finished. Then they went for full-on shock effect with the sequel and it was somewhat divisive, but I always liked it.

If you haven’t tried Freedom Fighters, it’s worth a look. Outdated now, but it was amazing for its time. Plus Hitman, obviously. I’ve visited their studios a couple of times, they’ve made some of my most memorable games.

I've got Freedom Fighters and most of the Hitman series. I.O. Interactive is also one of my favorite studios. One of the very few id preorder given their track record.

I think if I could only have one game to play for the rest of my life, and everything else had to be erased from existence, I’d choose a fully loaded Hitman 3. Can’t wait for their 007 game!

But the total gameplay is about 5 to 6 hours ....

I got it, but am torn on if I should play on my Steam Deck or on my desktop.
I tried Stray on both, I think it's better suited to the desktop. It really thrashes the Steam Deck, so I was getting about 90 minutes of battery life quoted. Limiting it to 40 fps raised that by another 45 minutes.

I got a refund before I played that long, though. This one just wasn't for me, I thought it was really slow and dull. You can only jump where it shows you a button icon, so exploring is kind of on rails. Also, what kind of cat can carry buckets in its mouth, operate levers, and rewire electrical circuits?

July 2022-
An interesting month.
  • World of Tanks- UNINSTALLED. The most expensive free game you might ever play. I spend way to much in this game trying to get the next better tank which constantly appear. Power creep (new more powerful tanks) is a huge issue, diminishing your prior purchases. Plus the match maker is suspect, and I’d go as far as suspecting the game screws with individual game mechanics such as gun accuracy and punishes those who enter the game in platoons. Random teams are not that random. Back to looking for a good tank game. See my complete rant here:
    https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/world-of-tanks.1540160/post-31278799

Of interest I experience a one week trial of a game play mode called Arcade Box which really seemed to have promise, but it only lasted a week.
  • Control- UNINSTALLED. I liked having the telekinesis power, I did not like the fog that the player is put in, story wise. Yes you know that the Bureau of Control took your brother, but it’s as if you are possessing someone else’s body. The Save point scheme, having to repeat sections of the game, it would be much better to allow the player to save at will especially with difficult areas. It had also started to dawn on me that this felt mostly about clearing rooms over and over again and the story was a minor part of this mechanic.
  • World of Warships- I’m still hanging in with this, but now I can hate both destroyers and submarines. At one point, I almost rage quit when I got hit by 8 torpedoes from a WWII era sub at point blank range. The choices that Wargaming has made in this game to balance game play STINKS.
  • Minecraft- Recently played this with a granddaughter, it’s still fun, I only play creative, and wonder why there are no ramps or angled pieces in this game. Come on Mojang you could do it if you wanted too.
I’ve got both Guardians of the Galaxy and The Witcher Wild Hunt queued up via Steam. Wish me luck! :D
