Uh.. that's where I have trouble figuring out what I need to do, right now as the drive stands I split it into two 40 gig partitions (both have OS9 support active, according to Disk Utility), so, if I understand right, I need to nuke it all and start from scratch?

Sorry if I sound like a total newbie :p this is my first New World PowerMac and I've got a truckload of questions to go with it.

(in the meantime I found someone selling a NIB FW400 MDD, I sent a message asking for pictures of the restore disks so I can find a part number to look up)
I'm not the best person to answer your substantive question. Re the restore discs, I am trying to find where I had found my set. I'm finding individual disks at archive.org but I am convinced there was a place that had everything. Basically, there's a DVD and 5 CDs required, I think...

Hey Alex so the mdd came with panther originally along with 9.2.2. The part number is 691-4681-A (DVD). Here are download links for the panther restore media click here. Enjoy :)

If I may, Here is better (no reg required for downloading, no adds...).

Hey there, that was fast! I'm gonna download these and see what happens, thanks! (...on the other hand, I feel a bit dumb for overlooking this). I'm particularly looking for the French localized versions, but that's not a huge priority atm, getting it booted under OS9 first is what I'm aiming for.

It's okay, I do have a picture of the FR localized restore disk set for the FW800 (on another listing on Leboncoin) though the picture is too grainy to tell, I'll keep digging.

Although, in a few days I'm probably gonna pick up another iMac G4 (1GHz, 15-inch) that has the restore disks, maybe on the off chance that the iLamp's restore disks has a OS9 image that can somehow work.. I still have no idea why my "ROM swapped" OS9 install boots to the splash screen then stays there forever.

In the meantime I'll get 10.4 on the other partition, though I just discovered that I have a bad DIMM somewhere on the board, I normally have 512MB installed, but when booting off the iBook's HDD, 10.4 reported seeing only 256MB? I smell something fishy about the Ram..

I've found a genuine use for my PPC Macs. Photo scanning/editing! I shoot 35mm film (mostly slides, but sometimes negative) and my Epson Perfection V300 Photo scanner doesn't play nicely with my M1 MacBook Air (it works for some stuff, but it freaks out when I try to scan a specific area of the flatbed, like a slide or negative strip). Luckily, the Epson V300 is so old that it works fine with PPC Macs (and Windows 9x PCs!).

Well... did an inspection of my G5 quad and found no signs of leakage since the rebuild a few months ago. However, managed to find more air bubbles so worked them out and topped off the coolant. After booting I noticed 2 of the RAM DIMMs weren't working so I reseated those and they automagically worked. I then ran several benchmarks to make sure everything is still being cooled properly... then compiled Interwebppc with the unofficial tenfourfox toolkit while watching the fan speeds and cpu temps/power. Still satisfied with the rebuild.

This time around, I'm gonna slap 10.4 on the MDD, so at least I can get it to boot into something.

Since I don't have any blank DVDs anymore, our old friend the iBook G3/466SE's gonna give a hand in making a 10.4 install USB, in the meantime, I'm gonna let it run all the night (it's nearly midnight where I live, and I'm starting to become sleepy)

Goodnight, and hopefully when I wake up, the iBook will have finished *yawn*

Installing Tiger from my USB was always hit or miss. I used the 4CD set and it worked perfectly.

I'm fairly certain I had burned a 10.4 DVD, but I've since misplaced it, besides my MDD came without a DVD drive :/

Right now I've booted the 10.4 install USB on the iBook with the G4 MDD connected to FireWire (Target disk mode shenanigans), other than it's glacially slow, it seems to be working.

Well, I got it booting 10.4, but uhm, I think we have a slight problem. 🤣

It's still inconsistent when it boots, I don't trust the current DIMMs I have... I'm still looking for the DDR1 DIMMs I had in my stash of parts, no luck.

Edit:

Just as I thought I had it right... It's stuck in a kernel panic loop: 17009244645381307932960254654745.jpg

I sincerely hope it's the RAM, rather than the CPU card (or worse, the motherboard)

Edit 2:

Okay now I'm beyond confused, I removed the RAM stick I thought is bad (Pic #3) and I got the machine booting up (Pic #4 and #5).

What on earth is going on now... Could it be that this is a temperature issue?

Mourned the death of my iMac G3 233 mhz. Was working fine when I last booted it 2 months ago, now I push the power button and ... nothing. Passed away in silence. Rest in peace old friend. It still has a place as decoration on the shelf though.

It can probably be repaired but it comes down to whether you have the soldering skills and the inclination...

Unfortunately I don't have soldering skills and between work, a 5-year-old daughter and many other hobbies the most precious resource is time (which is also why I don't visit here as often as I would like). I'll keep the machine though, maybe it'll be a retirement project in 20 years.

Edit: It definitely looks nice here.

It probably still works. Remove the logic board tray, then remove/replace the battery, and hit the CUDA switch. It'll most likely boot at that point. Mine did the same thing until I replaced the battery. Known issue with the Rev A-D iMacs.

Yep, same here on a RevB 233mhz iMac g3 as well as my B&W Powermac g3. New battery and cuda reset fixed the DOA appearance.

Good luck.

And how did your Legos survive a 5 year old ? Lol Space looks great btw. Yes, MOAR BALANCE.

I removed the battery a couple of years ago to avoid damage from a leaking battery. I'll definitely try the cuda switch. Thank you very much for the advice! Guess it'll be a Christmas holiday thing. Maybe Santa gives me luck & a working iMac. :)

Regarding my Legos and my 5 year old:

1. Important rule from the beginning: You only play with daddy's Legos TOGETHER with daddy.

2. They are placed high up out of her reach.

3. She got lot's of her own Legos.

Today I streamed music from iTunes 10.6.3 to Homepod 2 via Airplay. I was even able to use both of them as a (pseudo?) stereo pair. But the Audio always stopped after about 30 seconds, so its not really usable. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fix this issue and other applications like Airfoil wouldn't even connect.

Somehow it sucks the most when it ALMOST works. At least for me.

The... disk names... I take it this isn't your first issue with the M1?
Actually it was the first issue.

The disk names are leftover from back when the M1s had the whole SSD death scare. Though I've had mine for 3 years now and haven't run into an SSD failure, so in the end it was just a scare? Or Apple fixed it in an update. Not sure, didn't experience it. :D

I recently began daily driving my iBook G4 14" 1.42GHz, mostly out of laziness (too lazy to grab my backpack with my M1 Air from the car). It's going pretty well, though some things just don't work well. YouTube in AquaWeb micro (I miss AquaVid, anybody got a link?) works okay, but it's not totally smooth in 144p. TenFiveTube is a total slideshow, no matter what. That's really weird to me, being that my 867MHz PB G4 12" could do 360p totally smooth in TenFiveTube. Discord works okay in the Dark Web browser using a script to bring back the old YT layout. In all honesty, this iBook feels more and more like a Core Duo (or low clocked mobile Core 2 Duo) every time I use it. I'm not sure if that's because PPC software is improving, or if it's because the mobile Core Duo/C2D is finally getting pushed into obsolescence.
