I managed to trick MacPorts to not upgrade gcc7 on my PowerBook running 10.4.11, back to upgrading packages (again)!

Just fired up my PB G4, installed new Aquafox, and was playing around with Garmin Basecamp and some maps to have it there "just in case" I need for my Garmins Gps.
Interesting how such old version of software still plays well with new maps.
Btw, amazed also by the performance of Aquafox

I got FPO set up on my desk just left of my two monitors and part of me kind of wants to put Debian back on it to restore it to how it was when I got it, and also so I have a desktop and don't have to deal with having a laptop, keyboard, and mouse setup. At the time the MATE/GNOME split had already happened and it was running MATE, but I'm probably going to go for something else, possibly Plasma but we'll see.

Though I think I might wait on that until I can get an extra SSD to swap out the hard drive with...

9600 Pro from G5 was modified to run on G4, and it works really great!

/Me with a friend of mine are creating video where I test 6 GPUs in PowerMac G4: radeon 7000, 9000Pro, Nvidia MX2 (PC flashed), 9600Pro 64 Mb, 9600 XT 128 Mb and iXMicro TwinTurbo 128+ 😅

Suffering. There should be more APs than that by the way, it's just not picking up any signals after about a minute or two.

Did some photo editing in Aperture 2 today. The Power Mac G5 takes it like a champ. My MacBook Pro Early 2008 does Aperture 3 fine, but not under Mojave. Leopard + Aperture 2 is much faster but it doesn't natively support my DSLR unlike Aperture 3.6 :/.

Still I can edit JPEGs which is what everyone wants anyways so no big deal in the end.

@jktwice, I agree! I have Photoshop CS3 on my G5 2.3 GHz DP, and I actually do a fair amount of image editing with it to this very day. I originally got the G5 because it was 2x faster at many Photoshop tasks than it's contemporary PCs. It is still excellent in this regard and gets lots of use. I am restoring a G5 Quad right now; I can't wait to see what it does with Photoshop!

I would use Aperture 2 exclusively but again, it doesn't support my camera's raw file format (Rebel T5i).

I run 2.1.4 and CS2 on Leopard atm. You should try CS2 and 3 on the Quad. See the difference. CS2 is PPC only and is optimized for AltiVec instructions and such. I want to move over to Snow Leopard but it isn't *quite* ready yet for full-time use so it takes up a small part of my hard drive.

EDIT: Actually my GPU seems to be crapping out on me. I thought it was the PSU not delivering appropriate power, but when I got my Quad one of the capacitors on the 6600 was loose. It is probably failing to make some kind of connection until the card heats up. What do you recommend as a replacement or even an upgrade? There's a X1900 GT on eBay but it is $100 right now and that's too rich for my blood...

Get a PC-version and flash it. I paid about $30 for mine. You might have wait but they appear every now and then. Followed the instruction on the forum and it worked perfectly.

If in hurry make a "Radeon Mac G5" - search in fleabay and see what is available now.

Any specific model I should look out for or do all PC X1950 XTs work? (The ones without the bracket on the end I assume are PC cards).

@Tankerthebuberz, it does work extremely well, doesn't it? Back in 2006 when I bought my Power Mac G5 DP, the "buzz" was that both iTunes and Photoshop (just to name a few) were optimized for the AltiVec units of the G5 and were thus SIGNIFICANTLY faster and smoother than the same software on, say, a contemporary PC. As you are reporting, that was true then and is still true today!

When the published performance tests of the day showed that certain Photoshop filters ran twice as fast on the 2.3 GHz G5 DP as on the fastest PC of the day, I bought! Photoshop was really my main app at the time, and iTunes wasnt far behind. I was not disappointed! My new Mac surpassed all my expectations in this regard.

As a bonus, I found that Photoshop launched almost twice as fast on my new 2.3 GHz G5 Mac as it did on the 3.0 GHz Pentium IV Windows box it replaced. This is the stuff of the "Megahertz Myth" presentation Apple delivered at one of its MacWorld shows. Higher clock speed did NOT equal better performance. It was a tough sell, but it was true.

So, yes indeed, it works extremely well! ... and for some very good technical reasons!

I bought, flashed and installed the X1900 GT ie. the one you originally talked about. It was a PC-version but easily flashed to Mac Edition.

I don't know about other models.

You should look at these threads:

Interestingly this msata adapter showed up and ai was able to access what was on it (tiger and leopard installs) but I could not boot from it nor could I delete and partition it. I’ll pick up a cheap $10 128gb msata. Maybe it’s the 64gb innolite connected to it.

Ok now the msata decided to work lol. Deleted first and then partitioned and am now cloning the maxtor. We’ll see if it’s bootable after cloning. The previous clone with the ssd was successful however I could not get it to boot - would hang on the Tiger boot screen. This same adapter works great in my MDD so was surprised to see it hang however I think it is more to do with the clone as I do get to the boot screen which illustrates that the adapter is working. If this next attempt hangs as well, I’ll do a fresh install vs clone.

Love those ‘old school’ monitors.
I always wanted one…..

Today I finally hooked up my Quicksilver and added the audio switch I bought last year. So now my main PC and my QS can share the same speakers, witch is great because the internal speaker was driving me a little crazy, sometimes being quiet an other times too much bass. Also installed Aquafox and been adding extensions to make internet surfing a little easier. I'm hoping in the next few days to revisit hooking my minidisc player up to the QS.

what extensions have you added?

Hi @Certificate of Excellence, I stand corrected... it was not a generic card after all, it was a Sonnet Tempo E2P. I got it on eBay. Just search for "Tempo E2P". The generic card I am talking about is the SATA card I put into my Power Mac G4 Sawtooth. I got the two confused when posting this. My bad!
These cards are like $20-$30 on eBay. They really are not a bad upgrade. The only way to go faster is a fibre optic card I think. The old Celerity cards sell for dirt cheap so if you want to put together some wacky server build then you could do that.

Apologies for the double post.

Today I decided to try installing Linux onto my Power Mac G5. Well, I should clarify that for the past few days I have tried to install Linux to no avail.

Adelie - Fails to load GPU drivers at all in the GUI for beta6. I cannot start the horizon GUI installer as a result.
Fienix - Every time I try to install, it comes back with a corrupt filesystem error. I'm gonna try USB booting this one.
Debian Sid - Fails to install GRUB. I cannot figure out how to get it to work.

I haven't tried any older distributions or MorphOS. MorphOS seems cool but first I need to throw in my X1950 XT into the machine still. That project is still a WIP.

Since I have a new 2TB drive, I thought it would be silly to dedicate all that space to Linux. So I have decided to begin the process of moving over all my OS X installs onto that drive. I also wanted to stop using Sorbet as for some reason the Audio MIDI Setup in Sorbet didn't like my USB Audio interface when Tiger and even Snow Leopard PPC did. Very curious indeed. So, 10.5.8 Leopard through USB on this machine. I have found out that USB 1.1 boot is pretty stable on OF but USB 2.0 support is straight up dogwater. It's not unique to the iBook G4. Any of these machines with USB 2 has problems of some kind. Thankfully I didn't have to resort to directly probing the USB like I did with the iBook I have (where it didn't even work). Simply clarifying the USB boot path in OF did the trick and install went without a hitch. The main problem was really just getting a working dmg file in the first place which took longer than it did to install Leopard.

Once Leopard was installed, I updated it to 10.5.8 and opened Audio MIDI Input. My interface was still not detected. I apologize to z970. Leopard is just stupid. The new Audio MIDI Input in SL must have improved support then, so maybe it is ready for audio production?

Today I did a fun little fursuit vlog involving Apple technology from 20 years ago: I shot a video in HDV, and edited it on my early 2005 17" PowerBook G4 using iMovie HD 5!
5E3EB889-1333-4BBB-B759-85FEAFD9E42E_1_201_a.jpeg

Of course, this was kind of an all-day project, factoring in the shoot (with lunch break), and the time it took to capture/encode the footage, edit it, and then render it (especially with the effects applied to certain scenes!) But I had fun with it.
F04A9560-F816-445C-AED9-285CA425E9FA_1_105_c.jpeg

Because iMovie HD 5 and 6 would encode the HDV footage into AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec), the capture isn't real-time on Macs from the mid-2000s (later PowerPC and early Intel Macs).

iMovieHDSamValentinoFog.jpg

I also couldn't resist the opportunity using the Fog effect with my private toon detective fursona!

Here's the finished video!
