I succesfully managed to install NCSA Mosaic for X11 on my PowerBook G4 running 10.4.11 with my custom X11 environment. (with Gopher support too!)

An update on the above. The machine is back to idling at about 36 C now, but I think the fans have ramped up a bit to accomplish this result. The machine is still not particularly noisy - the CPU intake fans are running at 1455 RPM now; they were at a lower RPM level... I think!

Anyone else with a Power Mac G5 DP 2.3 GHz, what are your idle temperatures and fan speeds? Thanks!
Not your DC 2.3Ghz but I do have the DC 2.0Ghz a1117. Dropped on istat long enough to do this comp. Readings are in Farhenheit. a1117 2.0DC istat.jpg

Thanks @Certificate of Excellence, those are good CPU temperatures and GREAT fan RPMs.

Your GPU is quite a bit warmer than your CPUs... ditto for mine. I have a passively cooled GeForce 6600. What is your GPU?

I see what looks like an Amazon app and a Gmail app in your Dock. Are those Mac native, or Mac Ports. I am guessing this is Snow Leopard PPC? Thanks!

Yep, 6600LE. I’ve often considered puting a fan above it, like a pci slot exhaust fan; something to draw more air over the gpu heatink and out. I’m sure it could use some new thermal pads/paste as well but haven’t gotten around to that yet lol. With the recent positive thermal results from my 09 imac gpu/cpu repad/repaste, I should be more motivated to knock out a little GPU but yanno, life inevitably happens.

The CPUs I repasted a couple years ago and have been very stable. It’s about time to do the Northbridge though and I’m not really looking forward to taking the whole dang box apart to get to it lol.

The OS is Sorbet 10.5.9 and those apps you see are SSBs - site specific instances of @wicknix in the box. They *were* pointing to html instances of my Gmail and outlook email which was awesome but both MS & Google killed their html services last year because they want to be lame. The Gmail ssb still works fine but now loads their ugly bloated GUI & outlook fails on 2FA so is broken as far as I can tell - just haven't taken it off my dock yet LOL. EBay and Amazon are SSBs as well. They function as expected but truthfully I do the bulk of my actual searching and purchasing on my Apple silicon be it my iPhone14 or my M2 MBP. Anyways that’s what’s going on OS/App-wise there.

Wow, good to know about the drive. I've gotten into 9.2 setup three times with my disc and two out of three times it was dog slow, but the other time was actually kinda snappy. I'm hoping the built in drive has enough life to get this OS install done and then I can work around it with USB.

I did partition table to APM. I don't have any other drives handy and the only thing that might have one is an early Intel Core 2 Duo Mini, but I don't want to take that apart if I don't have to... Might need to go find a new SATA disk then :/
Minor correction, my install disc is 9.1, not 9.2

Anyhow, just got another SSD drive (OWC) in today, formatted to MacOS extended APM with a 5.5 GB Boot partition, and no dice in 9.1 boot, still only recognizes the 9.1 CD.

I'm ready to give up on the IDE->SATA SSD adapter, my question is for y'all is thoughts on SD->IDE, CF->IDE, or the Dosdude IDE SSD drives. I care about compatibility the most (my wife has no idea why I'm still bothering with this e-waste) and I really don't want to strike out a third time.

Thanks for the info @Certificate of Excellence. I had *completely* forgotten that in the Tiger/Leopard era, you could make a "web app" out of any web page. Thanks for the tip... I am going to get right to it! 😉
It's a handy app for sure. InTheBox also has a build for EI 10.6.8. I havent tried it on Lion yet so might see if it works on my a1118. Taking a little brain break in between trabajo tasks but when I get some free time, Ill clean up my A1117 desktop and get some of the newer apps I have been using (have been spending ALOT of time over the past few months on my PMG3 and G4 Systems lol) on here.

I let my a1117 DC 2.0Ghz PMG5 compile Tenfourfox using the Development toolkit while I worked (still working technically but on a quick brain break). Anyhow, working very well :) I could not build on Sorbet so had to move to Leopard. I assume this is because I chose for Sorbet to show 10.5.9 and that is what is stopping installation (which is completely fixable lol). Anyhow The browser is working great - what Im using right now.

Today, I took my Power Mac G5 DP 2.3 GHz, and swapped out the two sticks of PC2-3200U RAM in it for PC2-4200U RAM. Then I reset the PRAM during the first boot after the swap. I am happy to report that the fans have returned to their original, almost quiet, RPMs, and the CPU temperatures are back to where they used to be on idle, mid 40s C.

I am guessing that it was the reset of the PRAM that caused the revs and temperatures to go back to their original values.

I use this day my G4 MDD for rip, merge and convert some DVD into ProRes to make a SDI broadcast onto a BVM CRT.

I use MPEG Streamclip for that, with FCP6 to add subtitles (edited with belle nuit Subtitler) and Compressor for the final output. Last version of FCP cannot work with a interlaced TFF project for some reason, so the trusty G4 take care of that

And I search a copy of Avid Media Composer (circa 3.0.5), but without luck at this time

If you have a dongle I will lend you my copy of MC 3.1.1. I don't have a crack for it. The known crack for 3.0.5 doesn't work on PPC to my knowledge.

You may recall that I purchased a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 GHz after drawing attention to it here in these forums, and then receiving an offer from the seller that I could not refuse.

Yesterday, I opened it up and disassembled/removed the original Apple Runway card (combined WiFi/Bluetooth card) that was included. Nasty little job... like the shiny "G5" panel, it is held in place by plastic rivets that must literally be broken to extract the item of interest.

Then, to extract the newly freed card from the G5, the included wire antennas (2) must be disconnected. Those two are attached to the Runway card underneath the actual WiFi/Bluetooth module on the card. That module is held onto the card by two nearly microscopic screws. It is necessary to remove most of the RAM from the machine to create enough clearance to get even a jewelers screwdriver at them.

After tearing down and rebuilding G5 Quads for the last two months, this task was, relatively speaking, childs play, but WHY does Apple have to make everything so darn difficult to work with???

Anyway, all done, RAM put back and the machine was perfectly happy afterwards and booted immediately.

The Runway card is, as I understand it, specific to the late model 2005 Power Mac G5, so I hope to install it into my main Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 GHz.

Meantime, while I was in there, I tackled that other freakishly strong plastic rivet, the one that secures the shiny "G5" panel, and removed said panel to get a good look at the air cooling blocks and platform. I intend to remove those from the machine and retrofit them into a G5 Quad, or at least use their dimensions to select even more effective alternates. I must say, those air cooling "blocks" are not "blocks" - they are "towers"! They are huge. Even the 2.3 GHz 970MP must generate a bucket of heat!

Thank you, but sadly I don’t have the dongle, it’s seem pretty hard to obtain in second-hand market. But I was able to make what I want with FCP and JES Deinterlacer (reverse the field dominance from TFF to BFF)

Now I am on another project, I have received a FireGL x3 and I have swap the eeprom to 128k for flash the full X850 XT rom, work almost perfect but I have some random red block across the screen sometime, maybe a slight tweak in RAM frequency ( Infineon ram, can be picky from what I’ve read)

I have an iBook G4 running under the bed with a broken fan - silently updated all of MacPorts last week over the night.
PowerBook though was pretty useful to ingest a bunch of DV footage shot on a Handycam. I have a personal website now so I ran it through Safari 3 - I'm all for backwards-compatible web design ;)

Usually I work with a docked PowerBook G4 the whole Saturday, mostly reading articles or watching movies, but since the pace of life picked up and I do some creative work on the side I've spoiled myself with workflow, performance and silence of newer hardware.

Can anyone recommend me a great period-correct app for Tiger to record vinyl rips? I usually record in Audacity and transfer the project to PC, but Audacity is kinda sluggish on a G4. Looking for something easy and simple like that

I use GarageBand in Sonoma.
I assume it should work the same in Tiger.

Back in my G4PB days I used Bias Peak.

If you imply or consider open-source, then just find what appears to suite your needs, and then we can see if it is buildable. In principle, everything that uses either GTK or wxWidgets for GUI may work, while Qt5+ is broken. You will want to avoid GTK4 and wx 3.2, since while these work, they won’t be fast on G4. GTK4 is pretty buggy anyway.
