Got my PowerBook 1400 networked today at long last :D
Got it networked... sorta.

It works somewhat, but also works unreliably.

Used iMac G4 as a distraction-free environment to write a long e-mail to a Japanese friend while listening to an internet radio channel in Audion.

I can't believe I haven't realized the power of the Dictionary before: The English-Japanese dictionary extension is so useful because it shows examples of the words as they are used in sentences, giving me a much more accurate way to find the words with the right nuances that fit the context. Sure, those Dictionary features are available on my main Mac too but it's only on the G4 that I fully became aware of it because I couldn't use the usual third-party Japanese dictionary or online dictionaries that I'm so used to. Furthermore, I wasn't aware of the fact that the Dictionary occasionally contains pictures! I was searching for "airport" and the Japanese entry came up with a drawn schematic of what an airport consists of, with all the elements of the airport named; It was incredibly useful because otherwise, I wouldn't have even known which English words to search by in order to talk about a specific aspect of an airport! But so far, the airport entry has been the only one that I've found with a picture in it; I wonder how many pictures there really are in the Dictionary, and is there any global way to show those entries or is it just by pure serendipity that you stumble upon them?

Made a post to System7Today from my PowerBook 1400, which was recently revived by the Macintosh Garden :D
Ah, Mac OS 7, now that really takes me back. OS 7.5 was the goto for the emulator Basilisk II, as Apple had made it fully available for free off their site, and it just plain worked better than the likes of 8.1. I even have it installed on my PS Vita, that emulator really does get around.

Shame my only 68k Mac doesn't boot, and my only beige PPC Mac has always been a pain to work with.

Ah, that's a shame. I like 8.1 on my PowerBook, but there are some stability issues I'm experiencing. Do you think that would be solved at least somewhat by switching to 7.6?

My 68k Mac never even shows a sad Mac icon, I have to assume there are some dead caps inside it, and my beige Mac needs to be plugged in a while in order to boot. My assumption there is that the PSU isn't healthy. Basilisk II and Sheepshaver can do the duties of those Macs, fortunately, even if the latter is kind of jank. Besides, that's what having much newer PPC Macs is for.

Basilisk, in particular, tends to favor 7 over 8, in matters of speed, stability, and especially resolution changing. It also runs on just about anything, givin it is a 68k Mac emulator, and the requirements are quite low.

All of this is why I like having an OS 9 system, especially one that has specs that are an order of magnitude more powerful than my old main Mac.

Ah, ok! Thanks for the info :)

Yea, that would suggest maybe the PSU is bad in the 68k Mac and the beige G3 might have bad caps or a bad PRAM battery.

I wish it had been! But no, it's a 603 from the bad old days, running OS 8.5 on the original 1gb hard drive it came with. I very much like using my G4 MDD while thinking about that old machine. :p
What was the issue do you think? My 1400 runs a 603e without much issue, so I'm not sure it could have been the processor alone xD

It sort of depends on who you ask, but importantly, this is a legendarily bad Mac. Also, at the very least, the 603 is worse than the 603e, and the Performa 6200 and its variants were the slowest PowerPC Macs ever released. So, depending on who you believe, it really could be down to the cpu. There are certainly other issues, but that's the most painful one.
