Set up the 2009 Mini in the attic like this for fun. Feels like an entirely different computer when running Snow Leopard compared to Catalina. Especially with the studio display.
My 2006 iMac feels a out just as fast when running 10.6 but that one can’t even go past 10.9 :p

Yeah, my 2006 mini feels pretty much like a G4 mini... just faster.

I know it's not early Intel exactly, but it's related. Ever since a while back when there was the iOS update and hot spot no longer connected on Snow Leopard and older, it was inconvenient going places without internet sometimes. So I set up my Raspberry Pi as a WiFi-ethernet bridge and now I can connect to my hot spot on my computers like my 2007 MacBook running SL by plugging the Pi into the USB port and hooking up ethernet. I know I could've bought a bridge but I happened to have the Raspberry Pi sitting around.

Ive some setup have a RPi powered thru just the USB port, but Im not sure if that can be done on a USB or if it needs to be a USB 3. Or if that only works with the more recent RPi models.

Ive got an iBook with wifi access to the terminal on a RPi 2B, but still working on seeing if I can do it via just a network cable connection, and to have a RPi desktop display on the iBook.

I am able to access the Raspberry Pi through SSH when it is connected just via ethernet, no internet connection required. What I am not sure is a VNC viewer that works between Linux and Snow Leopard. Raspberry Pi OS comes with built in RealVNC Server, but I can't seem to connect to that with another client such as Chicken. Only the RealVNC client that runs on newer OSes. So if anyone has a suggestion for another method, it would be appreciated.

Downgrading VNC's security level is required. See here, "Authenticating to VNC server".

X11 forwarding is another, quite bandwidth-intensive, option. You need to have an X server, such as Apple's X11 (included on the Snow Leopard DVD) or the newer XQuartz (version 2.7.11 for Snow Leopard) installed. Once that is done, try ssh'ing into the Pi using ssh -X user@IP. Then, running any GUI application from the ssh connection should™ display it on the Mac. But you won't get a full desktop this way — you can set that up though.

Thank you for explaining options @Amethyst1 that is very helpful. Turns out, I had stopped reading the RPi support article the paragraph before the one you pointed out! My gosh! So thank you for pointing it out and now it works.

So I guess this also answers @mortlocli's question and this bridge method also works to SSH and VNC to the Pi.

Streaming Drone Zone from the SOMA FM app on the Early '09 Mini to the Late '09 Mini, which has attached speakers.

I moved the BassJump back to the 17" MBP and am streaming Drone Zone on it. Both streams match up and I'm not hearing an echo effect. No idea if that's only for one special moment or not. I make statements like that and it all gets out of sync later!

The view straight ahead…

Used the MacPro tonight to cut the cord - well part of it anyway. Just ditched our TV service.

I'm watching more and more stuff on streaming (using my Intel Macs), but local TV will be the next thing to figure out. Back to Digital TV antennas I guess.

Gotta start cutting some costs and dropping $175 a month for CableTV is one way to start.

Don't worry though! I didn't cut the Gigabit Ethernet and Unlimited Data. :)

I'm not THAT crazy!!!

Also…since the soundbar is connected to the TV and there is currently no antenna…used the experience with the L:09 Mini to get Soundflower up and running to a Multi-output device (Built in-Line Output and the Soundbar).

Working fine.

I took my stationary 120GB SSD from my MBP 06, and said "frig it" and stuck it into my Macbook from 2008... and now the thing is on SL and a flying machine! It is gonna make an excellent secondary writing system now :p

I am sure it's about 400% faster now and it has no login to go through, lol. And I get my nice, cool old version of iTunes back, instead of the gross, flat modern style version:

It's great that this thing has the cover flow art. Look at the Anuel AA cover, it actually looks pretty sweet.

I also put a new battery in it, because the old one was dead as a dodo and I wanted to bring this around the house without needing it plugged in all the time. AFAIK, the battery I got was cheap, but it only had 5 cycles on it (I was originally gonna use it on the Macbook 2009 that I never got, but it ended up on this).

And it doesn't heat up half as hot anymore because I have the fan control on it. It's a nice, cool temperature and it's not choking like mad with the old HDD spinning around in it, and it's also very quiet.

I think the thing that surprised me the most is that Youtube works almost perfectly on Interweb and can play in 720p very well. I wasn't expecting it to, but I guess this is a Core 2 Duo processor, and not a Core Duo like the MBP.
Screen shot 2023-02-08 at 16.15.46.png

And Nice Player works... nice on it xD

Screen shot 2023-02-08 at 16.36.53.png

I am gonna have fun with this again now that it's actually usable.

I bought two little hdmi switch boxes so now my 2012 i7 Mini can also use the two Dell monitors on my desk. Cabling is a bit of a mess but hey it works well. My Mini is my server/do everything Mac, it's over 10 years old now and still going strong. It's had a few upgrades of course, 256GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM, but still has the same original hard disk sitting inside which is now used for storage (check out the power on stats). The SSD apparently has 45% life left, so I guess another 4-5 years or so.

You could try an HDHomerun, I have one with dual tuners so anyone (max 2 people at one time) can watch TV on pretty much any device, iPad, laptop, smartTV etc. I have it running via Plex as well so can record shows etc.

It seems like my A1226s just can't catch a break.

I turned on my second A1226 green-dot JankBook Pro and found this...

IMG-1640.jpgIMG-1637.jpg

...hoo boy. After half a dozen reboots and shutdowns/cold starts, the problem wouldn't go away. But then after leaving it on for about five minutes or so the issues magically went away.

I'm at a loss for explaining it. Perhaps this is a heat related issue, where the heating of the GPU eventually clears up the graphical corruption? It seems like that to me, but that would make sense to me if the issue was relate to the solder joints -- from what I understand the issue with the GeForce 8600M was in the substrate used inside the GPU itself...

Oh, and as for what I did with an Early Intel Mac...I worked on updating my resume on this same Mac once all of of the GPU/display issues cleared up...

Have you checked the logic board? IIRC some very early green-dots were also 602 chips.

Also, I see from your second pic that you seem to be running a theme on Snow Leopard? If you don't mind me asking, what is it and where did you get? SL themes are extremely hard to track down these days.

Oh FFS. You have got to be kidding me.

No, I haven't checked the board, but to my mind this basically now means that unless you have some way of tracking down exactly when a given MacBook Pro's motherboard was replaced, there's a non-zero possibility that a green dot MacBook Pro could have a failure-prone GPU in it.

Ugh.

Both this and my yo-yoing other A1226 (which can't seem to make up its mind if its GPU is on a 1x, 4x or 8x PCIe bus) are the Mid-2007 models, the first revision to get the GF8600M. Presumably, if they got fixed early on, there's a higher likelihood that they would have gotten one of the early 602-equipped green dot boards. Sigh.

I use SnowTunes 3.0, which is still to my eyes the best and most complete Snow Leopard theme I've seen - a huge bonus is that it's installed through a standalone installer, so you don't need an extra utility like ThemePark to run it. I also used to run Vitae 1.3.3 SL Unofficial, but SnowTunes just looks better for me -- it reminds me the most of UNO, which was an absolute requirement for me when I used 10.4. I've contemplated using Aqua Inspiriat but I think I need ThemePark to install it.

SnowTunes 3 and Vitae 1.3.3 SL Unofficial should still be available for download on DeviantArt.

Thanks! I may end up making a WikiPost of all the Snow Leopard themes floating around some day. Given that some are spread between old personal websites, macthemes, DeviantArt... I personally have a few floating around too.

Aqua Inspirat is my personal favourite, only wish someone still had a version for Magnifique on Leopard/PPC. But all of my Tiger and SL machines have it installed. I may try out SnowTunes, wonder how well it would look on my 27" TB Display... And yes it needs ThemePark, however quite a few themes needed it so I always install it when I set-up a new SL install.

There's also Black OSX 10.6.8 SnowLeopard, a black theme that had you having to awkardly replace the Sartfile.bin and Extras2.rsrc file.

Plus there was the vaunted CrystalClear theme too - which really annoyed me because when its creator EOL'd it they not only made it unavailable for purchase but unavailable for download too. I would have gladly paid them money to run it on my Macs running 10.6.8 and 10.7.5, which were my daily drivers for a long time up until recently. I can't even find an email address asking Leland for it either. Ugh.

Scraping the edge of early Intel here for sure, but it got cutoff at the same time the late C2D stuff did.

I wanted tinyputer, which meant an 11" Air, something I never had previously. Waffled a lot on which model to get when I came across this 2011 for a reasonable price, in the top spec config (also has the 256GB SSD).

I think, for now at least, I'll leave it on High Sierra - pushing HD3000 much past Catalina doesn't seem to be worth it, and 10.13 to 10.15 isn't much of a benefit for what I hope to use as a light writing/browsing/Discord machine.

So today was spent getting it all updated and charged, and now I'm getting the SW loaded I need (good thing I keep my old iStat Menus serials, since 5.x works fine here).

Not wild about LibreOffice so far since I prefer Word, but 365 doesn't support this far back, so I'll probably just deal with it.

If they are fully compiled bin files, then it should be easy enough to zap it into a guiKit for ThemePark.

I've heard of CrystalClear before, never used it though. The same thing with themes being unavailable is the exact problem I have with Magnifique. Unlike ShapeShifter and ThemePark, Magnifique required the app to "phone home" to a server which contained all of the theme plugins available. Obviously once the server shut down, it took 90% of all Leopard-compatible themes along with it. Which is annoying since most of said themes were not available anywhere else on the internet, or were backed up to now dead links on macthemes.net (RIP).

The only official theme site left (apart from DeviantArt) is for Aqua Extreme (later known as Obsidian Menu Bar). They still have downloads going back to 10.5 Intel. IIRC lots of full desktop/browser/iTunes themes that were designed specifically for Leopard had standalone installers, since Unsanity couldn't port ShapeShifter over and Magnifique wouldn't be released for another year or so.

What's theme site to download Aqua Extreme? All of the links I've seen are for maxthemes.org, which is sadly dead.

I also just stumbled on the download for an older version of Crystal Clear which cites compatibility with OS X 10.6 to 10.7.3. It should be fine with 10.7.5...right?

any spinning ball using High Sierra?
that OS X hated my macbook air 2010 4GB in 2017-18.
I'm having new ElCapitan issues recently with safari and other websites in 2023
and thinking of installing Sierra
