I have an iPhone 7 that I probably won’t be upgrading. The battery is bad but I’ll just get that replaced at Apple. It’s a lot cheaper than the price of these new phones. They just get more expensive to the point they cost more than a MacBook Pro. I love the iPhone but it’s just not worth that much money to me.

Plus the iPhone 7 is still very capable. It hasn’t had difficulties running anything I’ve asked of it. It’s been an awesome phone and I’ll hold on to it for another year or two and then will “upgrade” to whatever is the cheaper iPhone model. Maybe a refurbished X or Xr will be around 500 in a few years.

XS Max - serious considering the 11 or 11 Pro 5.8" to bring the size of the phone down a bit. It will depend on how the camera of the 11 compares to the XS Max.

Here's my list.

Must-have:
- 5g

Would be nice-to-have:
- Wi-fi 6 (802.11ax)
- AV1 hardware decoding, not until 2020. For those not familiar this will be the new video format that will probably last 15 years or longer. With that said most services will probably be streaming h.264, HEVC, and VP9 for quite a while still, so maybe not a big deal on the next gen of this phone.
- High accuracy GPS chip

I don't care about other gimmicks that are being introduced. I want to see these industry standards implemented.

My prediction is that the 2019 phone will have 5g, maybe wi-fi 6.
2020 will probably also get AV1 hardware decoding.
High accuracy GPS is a wildcard - may or may not ever get it, but would love to, mostly for city use.

Upgraded the family to XR last week. With trade in, carrier discount, promo codes, etc., total cost, with tax and upgrade fees for both were less than the cost of one brand new XR. It seems that innovation for smartphones have plateaued and we just did not see the benefit to waiting what September brought for phones. The AW5 on the other hand...

Wasn't planning on upgrading at first.
But just sold my X and planning on getting a 11 (R) since it is a lot easier to sell while still under warranty and the upgrade to the 11 will not be too costly.

I find the X size too small and the Max too big. The XR size perfect, and I really like the aluminium colored sides.
Going back to LCD will suck a bit, but from having tried it in store, I don't mind it really. I use my iPad pro, Macbook Pro and my external monitors which all are LCD so I can live with it.
I was also really impressed by the new HDR in the S refresh, and it makes my X camera look like crap, so I'd be happy with the camera upgrade.

There is a difference with LCD naturally, but it’s not huge. The screen on the XR is very good and it wouldn’t bother me having that quality as my next phone. The 11R might come with an even better LCD you never know.

32GB 7 and not planning to upgrade. I’ve had zero issues with the phone and had the battery replaced while the program was running. I’d rather spend the money on something else until the phone dies or gets sluggish. I’m imagining that will be fall 2020, but we’ll see.

I purchased a iPhone 6s 16GB Silver phone about 8 months ago from Boost Mobile website. I qualify for Boost Up upgrade program now but I was thinking about the iPhone 7 Plus and upgrade to it.

No, not even close. I don’t mean to be overbearing, but that’s been debunked months ago that the 2019 iPhones are not 5G capable. 2020 will allow the transition to be greater with the modem changes, but there’s nothing remotely true about the 2019 iPhone including 5G.

Right. This doesn't answer my question at all though.
It tells you you can sell a iPhone privately for more than a trade in which I thought may be helpful, then I forgot where I was, MacRumours. So no idea don't know you could just find out for yourself by trying a few sites out and typing in your device model if that's not to hard of course. Is that better? <sigh>

Coming from android platform , I needed something reliable and which just works , plus couldn’t be bothered to wait till end of September, i decided to go with XR about 2 weeks ago, the device is super I love it , I’ll probably keep this for 2 years it’s just so brilliant , Snappy , takes awesome pics and battery life is really good as well

I have an iPhone 8 Plus (256gb) and my wife has my old iPhone 7 (128gb), both through my business. The iPhone 7 has fully depreciated in my accounts, so I will probably give that’ll my daughter, give my 8+ to my wife and get the new iPhone.

If not, then I will just trade in my 8+.

I’m not even sure you’ll know if it has AV1 hardware decoding. HEVC hardware decode was put into A9 but they didn’t announce it or give support for it until two years later (iOS 11). Apple is generally late to the game as it is, they were the last to join in with AV1 too.

I’d expect it’ll be a while yet for AV1 on iOS devices, do any android devices have it yet? I definitely don’t see Apple being first, especially when it feels like they’ve only just pushed HEVC.

Which isn't what I asked at all, is it?

Again, you didn't even read my post. Nowhere did I ask about trade-in values at random sites. No, I asked about trade-in prices at Apple, and I even explained why I asked that, which is specifically because Apple's site does not list a price:

How much did Apple offer for the X on trade in right after the Xs was released? An X fetches $400 now at Apple, but I'm wondering what it was last year after the Xs was released.

Trying to gauge what they will offer on an Xs once the 11 is out, as right now their site doesn't even let you select an Xs.

Get it now? Either read the post and answer the question that is asked, or don't bother. Don't answer a question that wasn't asked, and then get condescending about it with further useless drivel that still doesn't answer the question when you get called out on it.

Telling me to sell my phone privately or condescendingly telling me to "find out (trade values) for yourself by trying a few sites out and typing in your device model" when I'm clearly and specifically asking about an Apple trade in value, and specifically because Apple doesn't list an Xs trade value on their site yet - is just stupid.

Please don't reply any further. You just plain didn't read my post, clearly, and that's really all there is to it.

I "bought" (rented is probably closer?) my XS Max on the IUP in January. Given the economics, I'll probably give it back to Apple and get an 11, probably 11 Max. After the one-year mark, the IUP becomes increasingly pointless economically.

The feature that I find most interesting is the wider-angle FaceID camera. I use my phone on a desk or table a lot and it would be nice to have it unlock without having to move the phone (or myself) or enter the passcode. (Not even a first world problem, I admit.)

7 Plus 128gb Jet Black here. Will upgrade if 128gb is the new base storage. If not, will likely wait another year. My guess is the Pro models will start at 128gb, but not the new R.

iPhone X. No plans on upgrading. the rumored Apple Pencil support has me interested, but if it's not part of the body, ist a no for me.

My iPhone X is just a powerful as it was on launch day if not more.

Currently have an X which I got at launch. I just don’t see anything in the (rumoured) new iPhones that justifies the cost of upgrading which is very disappointing.

My new plan is to get a new battery for the X and wait and see what the 2020 models are like.

I’ve been a launch day upgrader for each gen since the 5S and currently have an XS Max. I was so close to not upgrading last year as the upgrade cost was just getting too high. Time was when the phones where around the £700 mark and the previous gen would sell for say £400 that it would ‘only’ be around £300 to upgrade. But now with the higher purchase cost and the old phones losing more of their value, the upgrade cost is easily double that.
Last year it was the bigger screen of the Max from the X that won me over (I don’t have particularly big hands but never felt the plus’s or Max have been too big). I love having the latest and greatest so really hoping there’s something that wins me over and Apple has some how covered up some killer features, but unfortunately I think I’m going to be left a bit ‘meh’.
My S3 watch on the other hand will definitely be getting an upgrade this year!
....And knowing me i’ll Probably cave and get the “11 Max” too.

I currently have a 6s Plus. I was mulling over an upgrade last year, but had got a new battery during the cheap replacement programme and a stainless steel Apple Watch Series 4 was quite a bit of cash so getting an iPhone too would've cleared too much of my bank balance in one go!

I'm 80% on upgrading this year. The lack of 5G is a small issue. It's true to say that 5G is a waste of time for many people right now as there's little coverage and the really fast speeds and improved latency won't be available in the UK for a good few years anyway, however if I keep my next phone for as long as I've had my current one then that will be at least 4 years, so during the lifetime of my next handset 5G will likely become more of a "thing".

What'll probably happen is that I'll upgrade this month anyway and if 5G is something that suddenly becomes important within my 4-year planned ownership, I'll just have to upgrade a bit earlier next time.

So that means choosing between the XR replacement and the XS Max replacement. Will have to see what floats my boat in the presentation.

iPhone X. It's a great phone. Expensive too. Probably won't be upgrading.

iPhone 7+ probably my favorite phone so far. I gave it to a family member. When I have used it, I miss how solid it feels. Touch ID is great and snappy (Face ID can be annoying) and I love the size. It also doesn't feel as fragile. I think I'll go back to a + size phone when I do upgrade.

I have also not kept a phone for 3 years. But at this price point, I think I will.

7 Plus. It's on 96% battery health which I find surprising as I haven't had it replaced.

This is the longest I've used an iPhone and am feeling a bit strange about AppleCare now that it has run out for this phone.

I'm not planning to upgrade until 5G and am hoping that either iPhone prices drop across the board or an SE2 is released by then. I prefer to own my phones and pay for them in one go, so would prefer a more 'affordable' phone. It's quite sad that at the time, the 7 Plus was the best and yet only about $700. How things changed!

Edited to add: I just checked the website and they're selling the 7 Plus for pretty much the same price I paid for it 3 years ago and the XS Max is pretty much DOUBLE!!!!!!! Horrifying! I can't imagine any phone being twice as good as the one I have now to justify the extreme price hike.
