In a coffee shop.
Yesterday evening I dined on Sushi (bought from the Japanese sushi stall - which itself is the offspring of an excellent, award-winning sushi restaurant - at the farmers' market): This comprised: A Tuna roll, a salmon roll, a salmon katsu roll, and a teriyaki chicken roll.

So many Americans, friends and study abroad students alike, rave about Chik-Fil-A. I have been avoiding US fast food chains (well all really) for awhile but it may not be possible if I visit the US over the holidays. Is it really that much better than the other big chains?

Fast food is just fast food and nothing to rave about. Chik-Fil-A‘s food quality, service, and dining facilities are clearly better than other chains and their business model is outstanding.

Today I'm keeping it simple; canned reindeer balls (that's meatballs from reindeer ;)) with potatoes and brown sauce. That's Joikakaker and nypoteter in Norwegian.

Yeah, I still say Joika-kaker, even though they changed the name - to Vilty or something - years ago...

Good idea for later this week, it's been a while since we had that. :)

Mmmmm. Rudolph!

Do you can them yourself or is it something you can buy at a store?

No it's not. All fast food including Chik-Fil-A is not healthy food. I don't eat it anymore and have not for more than 10 years now.

I can't agree with that, at all. I've visited the new, local CFA's over the last few years and they weren't any better than anything else (lotsa good-looking mommies among the customers though, not sure why).

Gonna post a question here, maybe it should be its own thread: anyone else here notice that Burger King offers a Whopper Meal for $11.10 (your price may vary) with 2 options to enlarge the meal? The Lady Behind the Speaker asks if you want a Medium or a Large, and you order the Medium, thinking you got the meal for $11.10. But, at the first window, they ask for ~$1.50 more than you were expecting. The first time, I was a bit surprised, but I paid the requested amount.
A few weeks later, I again got lazy about cooking and hit the BK drive-thru, but paid more attention to the billboard; $11.10 advertised price, $1.50 more for a Medium, and $2.30 more for a Large. Same question from Speaker Lady: Medium or Large? This time I say, No, just the regular, for $11.10. "So you want the Medium?" Me: "NO, I want the Regular, or Small, that you're advertising for $11.10!" Pregnant Pause. "We don't sell that, do you want a Medium or Large?" Me: "Why are you advertising a Whopper Meal for $11.10 if you're not selling it?!?!" Crickets.

Somewhere, in the distance, a dog barked.

Fortunately there was no one in front of my in the line, and I just pulled forward, flipped 'em off at the window, and drove off. I realize that the minimum-wage folks at the speaker/window/grill/cashier spots are only doing what they're told, but I want to ask: Is this happening in your area? I doubt that it's a single franchise thing, or even a Utah thing; I'm betting this is a nation-wide BK thing from their Overlords.
Is this happening in your area?

I have not eaten at Burger King for ages, although I liked their "Swiss" burgers - Gruyere and Appenzell - but I doubt they would do that in Europe as there are laws against misleading advertising. Don't they have these laws in the US?

Yes, but some fast food is an awful lot worse than others; they are not all equally appalling - some are truly awful, whereas others fall into the category of an occasional (furtive, guilty) treat.

In general, neither do I.
McDonald’s quarter pounder with cheese. 😏
As an occasional - very occasional - treat (yes, I watched Pulp Fiction, but I also recall falling upon the eponymous quarter pounder with cheese in Germany with undisguised pleasure as a student a few decades ago) - there is nothing wrong with the classic quarter pounder with cheese.

No.

Whatever about McDonalds, I will not darken the doors (proverbially, or otherwise) of Burger King, and haven't done so for decades and decades.

Even as a student, I found their stuff absolutely appalling.

I was actually joking. McDonalds Quarter Pounders have been linked to 50 cases of ecoli with one death.

I read this as "McDonald's Quarter Pounder with disease" !!! Headlines in the US about this, as as been noted in your recent post (above mine) here..... Understandable, though, that it is probably not even being mentioned in news abroad, since it was just residents in a few states which have been affected. Nasty situation all the way around, though!

As for me, the only times I have gone to McDonald's is when traveling with a friend who insists upon stopping there for lunch or sometimes even dinner rather than finding a decent place. OK, fine, on the road when we don't really want or need to venture far from the main highway/turnpike/expressway we're on, but otherwise....no thanks!

With regard to Chick-Fil-A, I've only been there once, when with a friend on a photo shoot out of our immediate area and around lunchtime we were getting hungry. It was OK, nothing special, nothing so compelling about the food or their menu for me to decide I needed to find one close to home for future visits. For all I know there could be one within a few miles but I'm just not interested.

I have said it before, but when communicating in writing online, humour - especially with those from other countries and cultures - rarely travels - or translates - well.

In any case, I had assumed that you were entirely serious, and that you meant what you had written, and thus, I saw no reason to regard your post as an example of "humour".

Where? The US?

I hadn't known that, - and find it surprising, as McDonalds, in my experience, tend to meet appropriate standards of hygiene, but here, I write about Europe, where regulation tends to be reasonably strict and properly enforced - but will say that, when serving abroad, some colleagues will insist on paying a visit to McDonalds when on a day's leave.

In fairness, I have always found their rest rooms to be clean (very welcome in some of the places where I have worked), and - again, in my experience - I have yet to hear of a case of food-poisoning from McDonalds; the fact that parents of my acquaintance have used it as a venue for birthday parties for their children (something that would be less likely were hygiene controls less rigorous) also strikes me as something positive and worth noting.
