In a coffee shop.
Dinner, this cold March evening will take the form of the following:

Thus far, I have spent the past hour preparing a vegetable dish gratin style (or boulangère style); essentially, parboiled potatoes, sweet potato, and carrot (rather than the more usual onion), tipped into a roasting dish where a head of garlic has already been diced and is awaiting the parboiled vegetables; add the stock that the potatoes, carrots and sweet potato were boiled in.

Place in preheated oven and cook for a further hour.

This will be served with spicy sausages (Mexican style) from the artisan butcher.

And French wine.

Dinner has been consumed: Vegetables boulangère have been devoured, along with spicy Mexican sausages, served with a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape to wash it down, and followed by a cheeseboard (Schnebelhorn, Gorgonzola Cremosa and Camembert).

Roasted a chicken that was liberally coated with Shwarma seasoning and Aleppo pepper. Came out very tasty! Also threw some sliced zucchini with butter, olive oil and Parmesan in to bake. And, as an added side I made gluten free mac and cheese, (mainly because my daughter won't eat zucchini!). Worked out pretty well.

My daughter is spending the weekend and yesterday was her 22nd birthday. She preferred to stay home so I made her a classic croque monsieur birthday sandwich but bought her a traditional key lime (birthday) pie. Lol.

(This is actually a practice sandwich from a few days ago. No photos taken last night.)

Nice! My daughter is a birthday pie girl, too. We alternate between chocolate pies, homemade butterscotch and Mystery Pecan Pie (which is a holiday staple around X-mas and Thanksgiving).

My birthday's a week from Monday. I can stop by for a croque monsieur birthday sandwich and a Pez dispenser. I can get my own key lime pie.

You got it!
I'll need directions...

EDIT (To clarify and explain)

I no longer have the directions you gave me from the first time I tried to stop by. They were written on a piece of paper, which unfortunately got lost.

Those directions led me to a junkyard in Bakersfield, which seemed a bit unusual, but you might have another investment property you hadn't mentioned on the MR forums. It was a Thursday night and the gate was locked.

There was a dog inside the fence, but it did not like being addressed as "Lulu", or anything else, really. It was also much bigger and looked more muscular than she seemed in the pics you posted, but sometimes photos can be deceiving about scale, or because of different lighting.

Anyway, the barking dog eventually led the Bakersfield PD to show up, and they confirmed that the address I had written down was that location. However, when I was putting the paper back in my pocket, I happened to get too close to the fence and the dog snapped it out of my hand and ate it on the spot. The officers checked that I was uninjured, but the directions were hopelessly lost.

After further discussion, the officers also escorted me back to the main road, because "it can be a fairly rough area after dark". Luckily, nothing happened to the rental car, and the only casualty was the paper with directions on it.

Dinner was a simple (but tasty) dish of organic, free range eggs scrambled (a few dessertspoons of organic double cream added, plus sea salt and freshly ground black pepper).

Toasted French bread to accompany.

Oh yes, I remember the onion fields of Bakersfield. I’ve moved. That city desert makes you feel so cold. It's got so many people, but it's got no soul. So I made a little dream of buying some land. Give up the booze and those one night stands. And I’d settle down in a quiet little town and forget about everything. I need to send you the new address. Sorry about that.

Being by the pool last week made Lulu self conscious of her weight.

So she started yoga and Pilate and excited to see you to show you her abs, birthday boy!
