Three days ago I ordered X1E with i5. Then I cancelled it over the weekend due to possible new laptops. Now I want T590. Tomorrow I may change again. Later we will see X1E Gen 2. Unlike the MBP, there are so many nice Thinkpads to choose from this year. I am getting crazy...

They have 4K option.
I'm looking at the T490, I have to say, after using the X1 Carbon on the road last week the 14 inch screen really grew on me, as in it is not as bad as I thought and I can still do everything I was doing on 15 inch, but the portability is simply awesome. I just wish the screen was brighter and for something better than the integrated HD620. T490 has both and compared to T590 the only thing missing looks to be the full size SD card reader and this 4k screen (has 500 nit 1440p instead).

It looks like the T590 has off center keyboard due to the numberical pad on the right. Anybody tried Thinkpad with this kind of keyboard? It is not as ergonomic as some Thinkpad users stated?

The stated battery life is impressive. Not sure how it performs in real life. Besides the GPU, any important difference between the T590 and X1E?

Soon as the 9th Gen lands with RTX graphics I'll jump from my present primary 8th Gen with GTX graphics. My on the go 2 in 1 with 7th Gen Intel will remain until I either get bored of it or I see a significant benefit to upgrade.

I far prefer my primary notebook to have a numeric keypad, if not I'll employ a BT/USB solution. The Trackpad not being central has no bearing with me as I can use it with either hand.

If you guys ever sell your Laptop, where would you go other than E-bay ?
I sold mine on swappa, I asked here in the markeplace forum what the value was, I also observed pricing on eBay and based on that I agreed to a price on swappa. It was probably a tad lower then what the market value was but it was a decent price. Ideally Craigslist or Facebook would be the best bet but you limiting your audience and it may take longer.

And when you do sell your laptop. Do you factory reset it?
Yes, of course. Here's a fairly comprehensive set of steps https://www.imore.com/how-sell-your-mac

I don't I either gift to family or friends or give to a charitable cause. I perform a secure wipe and basic install first, I figure that the hardware has more than paid for itself countless times over and should go to someone who will benefit from a good computer.

Just about to reset and gift a mid-high tier W10 notebook to friend who has a greater need, as her notebook is on it's last legs.

It seems the luck I've had in selling has been good, its been quite infrequent. A couple of years ago, I swore off selling my stuff because of some rather needy, high maintenance people. In 2018, I sold my SurfaceBook, only to have to take it back because the buyer didn't like the trackpad and saying it was defective. Yet, if I were to make a change in platforms like I did (and I'm happy I did), selling my 2018 MBP was a must. Thankfully, prayers were answered and the sale was seamless and problem free.

I have several laptops in mind:

C930 for portability and tablet mode to use on buses. Worry about 4K screen in smaller lcd size
X1E Gen 1 for immediate availability and large 4k screen. Let's put aside the current noise issue
X1E Gen2 for improved hardware with better thermal and large 4k screen
T590 for large 4k screen and hopfully better battery life than X1E series

What suggestion do you have? I have a powerful workstation so cpu and gpu power on laptop are not important to me anymore.

Thank you. Maybe, if that time comes, I’ll just keep it as a back up. Probably lose too much money or it might be too much of a hassle to sell it. I too would wipe it and reinstall windows.

The downside of selling online is the threat of disputing the sale. I had an old windows phone (when that was a thing) and I sold it on swappa but the buyer was a royal pain in the behind. He had issues left and right and finally forced me to refund him the money and return the phone. There was nothing wrong with the phone, all the problems he had were not there, i checked the phone out myself when I got it back and it was fine. He just changed his mind. That one sale really put a bad taste in my mouth, and I swore I'd never do it, then I tried selling my SurfaceBook and a similar thing happened. Arrrgh.

At least my MBP sale went and my reasoning is, I knew it was in mint condition and time was NOT on my side, i.e., keyboard, so I needed to unload it sooner then later. That way the buyer would have a period of time with a mint laptop and not incur any problems (I hope).

It's not a given that the gen 2 will have better thermals

Check out Huawei Matebook X Pro.
Excellent and huge screen, excellent battery life, and it comes with a dGPU.

Those ultrabooks are a beast, best ultrabooks on the market probably. Build quality is great as well.
And it's powerful for an ultrabook, but still dead silent. 3:2 screen is just icing on the cake.

I think you're putting too much faith in the Gen 2 being cooler/quieter then the current X1E. Why do you think its going to be so?

I've not heard of the T590, but Lenovo has the T580 and it appears only the highest end model offers a UHD screen. You're paying a premium for that option, as the MSRP is over 2k (though we know you'll be able to find coupon codes).

I guess the T590 was just released, so I have no idea what the specs of that will be, but the T580 looks to be a nice laptop, though it is sporting a i7-8650U CPU and iGPU only. if you don't need horse power then this may be a nice option.

It can be as bad if you sell locally as well. I sold a computer to someone who lived in my neighborhood some time back and I learned the lesson about not having people come to your home and buy things and also don't give them your phone number. Every issue the guy had with the machine was self-inflicted due to software installs, utility installs, not knowing how to use the software he installed or trouble with hardware I did not sell him. But every time he had an issue he would call me or ring the doorbell.

If I were to ever sell something locally again it would be by meeting them at an off-site location, having them sign an "As Is" Bill of Sale and no exchanging of phone numbers.

Agreed. I think there will be some measure of performance increase, but whether or not the machine will run any cooler or more importantly to Hajime quieter, remains to be seen. Lenovo does not appear to be afraid to be aggressive with the fans to maintain performance.

I need a Windows PC for new job starting next week. However, rather than shipping the laptop to me by today (Friday), Lenovo crazily cancelled my order. Now it is too late to order a new laptop and get it by the weekend. What suggestions do you have?

Head to the shops, seems the obvious answer, or use an older notebook until you can sort things out. Doesn't need to be perfect simply needs to work in the interim.

MBP 2010 is dying, I guess. Sometimes not even respond to typing.

So just head to MS store, get a SB2 15" and try it for a month. If X1E's fan issue (alternating between dead silent and jet engine) is fixed, consider to get back to X1E?

Buy something and learn to live with it, as all notebooks are compromised by default. Purchasing with the intention of returning only serves to drive up pricing for all, which I personally belive is a "poor show"

I do my homework, live with the deficiencies and reap the benifits. My current primary notebook is far from perfect, equally it has paid for itself countless times over in the last 6 months, and and will continue to do so for a further 18 months. It's not a prestige piece, it's a performant tool that gets thrown in a bag, travels the world, and most importantly delivers systematically.

SB2 is an excellent notebook for productivity usage and a lot more, is it perfect no, would I pick one up? Categorically yes...

If the tablet aspect has no use, then put your money elsewhere, then or simply save it. Counterpart to my primary hex core, 32Gb, 1070 duel drives is a lowly 2in1 with i3, 4Gb, 128 SSD, equally it serves it's purpose and cost a whopping $650. It beats out any Android or IOS tablet and retains the flexability of a full desktop OS.

It's numbers may be deminuative, however it also puts many more powerful to shame as it offers sustained perfromce, and beyond what the SP5 with i5 offers. Most importantly it does what I need it to do, and that's what really counts...
